Beginning on 4th September 2006, Alles was zählt (literally 'All That Counts' but more accurately 'All That Matters') is an urban soap opera that has aired on the German network RTL for nearly 20 years. Commonly known as AWZ, the show airs for 35 minutes between 19:05 and 19:40 every weeknight, though ten minutes of this runtime is for advertising.
Like RTL's other two serial dramas, Gute Zeiten, Schlecte Zeiten (1992- ) and Unter Uns (1994), Alles was zählt is produced by Grundy UFA. Although the show is set in the major city of Essen in the west of Germany, it is actually filmed in Cologne in the southwest.

The original premise of the show was centred around the character of Diana Sommer, and her aspiration to become a world-class ice skater. In real life, actress Tanja Szewczenko actually was a famous German ice skater already, winning several bronze medals in the 1990s. Diana falls in love with Julian Herzog (Paul T. Grasshoff), who signed her up at the prestigious Steinkamp Sport & Wellness Center, the main set of the show. The center is run by the unscrupulous Steinkamp dynasty, and they remain the main family unit in AWZ.
Diana and Julian later become a couple, but tragedy strikes when Julian suffers a brain hemorrhage and dies on their wedding day in November 2007. Diana remained in the show until January 2009, when she left to join a skating centre elsewhere. She eventually returned in 2016. Over time, the show has evolved to feature characters and settings around as well as at the sports centre, in its continuing quest to become a sporting powerhouse venue.
In February 2008, AWZ won an award for its portrayal of the gay relationship between characters Deniz Öztürk (Igor Dolgatshev) and Roman Wild (Dennis Grabosch). Although Roman left the programme in 2011, Deniz remains. The popular couple were dubbed 'Dero'.
Since it began, Alles was zählt has produced over 4,500 episodes. Internationally it airs in several countries. In Poland it is known as 'To, co najważniejsze' ('What Is Most Important') and airs on TV Puls. Elsewhere it is known as 'Le Rêve de Diana' ('Diana's Dream') and airs in Belgium (Plug RTL), Canada (Series+), France (M6) and Switzerland (TSR).
