1x01: 'You said we were done' | Written by Hannah | Episode One
It was late afternoon on Canvey Island and it was already dark and the street lamps were the only source of light outside the Crown and Horseshoe pub. Inside the pub, it was deathly quiet and barmaid Chloe Charles was leaning against the bar, watching the card game of three elderly men in the corner. She stood up straight as she noticed her boss Lindsay Hastings approach from the office, Lindsay gave her that disapproving look that Chloe had now got used to. Chloe shrugged “There’s nobody around Lindsay” Lindsay sighed “I don’t want the first thing people see when they walk through the door is you lounging all over the bar looking like you want the world to end” Chloe rolled her eyes and went to collect the empty glasses from the men playing cards. Lindsay looked around the quiet bar and hoped it would pick up later on in the evening. Lindsay jumped as she felt a hand brush across her lower back “You scared me” She laughed as she kissed her husband Daniel lovingly on the lips. “Sorry Linds” Daniel smiled, the look on his face not sorry at all.
*
Naomi Donovan clung onto her sister Olivia Kane’s hand as they waited outside the prison in Portsmouth. Naomi was feeling sick with nerves as she waited for her husband Cole to be released. “It’s going to be ok sis” Olivia tried to reassure her sister. “What if he’s different?” Naomi asked quietly, wondering if she should have spoken her thoughts aloud. Olivia put her arm around Naomi “He is going to be different, he’s been in that place for a long time, but he has you to help him get used to life again and he’s got the children” “Has he?” Naomi frowned “Noah walks out the house every time I mention Cole, what is he going to be like with him being back?” “Noah has a huge chip on his shoulder” Olivia complained “I’ll have a word with him” “I wish I had the kind of relationship you have with him” Naomi looked sad “He really listens to you and he respects you” “You’re his mother, no boy listens to their mum” Naomi laughed “Maybe you’re right. Thank you Liv, I don’t just mean for today. I mean for everything, I should never have let us stay apart for so long” “It’s ok, I know how bad things were between you and Mum” “She thought I chose Cole over my family, but that wasn’t what I was doing, I promise” “Let’s not go over old ground, Mum’s gone now and we have the chance to be sisters again, let’s just focus on the future”
*
Siobhan Spencer laid the table for dinner; she smiled as her step son Anthony walked through the front door “How was school today?” She asked brightly, she got nothing but a grunt in response as he walked past her and straight up the stairs to his bedroom. Siobhan’s twelve year old daughter Emily came down the stairs and helped her finish the table. “Are you having dinner with us tonight?” Emily asked hopefully. “I’m sorry sweetheart, I have a shift at the restaurant tonight” Siobhan affectionately stroked Emily’s face “But your Nan’s coming over tonight and she said she’ll help you with your English homework if you like” Emily shrugged and nodded. Siobhan sighed as she saw the look of disappointment on her daughter’s face, between her job at Faraday’s restaurant and her job at the Crown and Horseshoe; Siobhan didn’t have much time for family dinners.
*
Naomi squealed as she took in the sight of Cole walking towards her, she let go of her sister Olivia’s hand and ran into Cole’s arms and kissed him passionately. “I’ve missed you so much” Naomi couldn’t stop the tears from forming in her eyes, she took a step back from Cole so she could take in his appearance, it felt like she was in a dream. “I’ve missed you too babe” For the first time in what felt like years, Cole smiled and he pulled his wife into a tight hug “Take me home” Cole and Naomi walked hand in hand towards Olivia, who was smiling, relieved to see her sister so happy. Olivia walked towards Cole and held out her hand towards him “A new beginning?” She offered. Cole took Olivia’s hand and shook it “A new beginning” He confirmed “You’ve grown up” Cole acknowledged. “Well, that tends to happen in the space of fifteen years” Olivia laughed.
*
Josh Connor walked into the Crown and Horseshoe and headed straight for the bar “You alright Chloe?” He asked as she walked over to him from the other side of the bar “It’s a bit quiet in here” Chloe smiled politely “It’s a Thursday afternoon, what can I get you?” “That’s alright, I need the quiet, my sister has her friends over at my place. Just a Fosters please” “A house full of teenage girls, I don’t blame you for escaping” Chloe laughed as she poured the pint and handed it to Josh, she took the money and punched in the numbers to the till, she turned around smiling, but Josh had already walked over to a table in a somewhat isolated corner. She watched Josh pull out his laptop from his backpack and scatter pages of notes across two chairs. Her attention was taken as another customer approached the bar. “How can I help you?” Chloe smiled at the stranger. “I would love an Espresso if you do them” He asked politely, sitting breathlessly at the bar. “You’re in luck, I make the best Espressos on Canvey Island” Chloe went over to the coffee machine and turned it on. “I look forward to being impressed” “You’re new around here right?” Chloe called over from the machine. “Just moved over from Dublin, I brought the garage down the road” A few minutes later Chloe returned with the Espresso “£3.50 please” Chloe took the money “I’m Chloe by the way” “David Fields” He answered and drunk from the cup, he nodded his head approvingly “I don’t think you give yourself enough credit Chloe, that’s the best Espresso I’ve had in a long time”
*
Cole and Naomi finally arrived at number 20 Canvey Crescent after a long three hour drive. Cole had remained pretty quiet as Naomi tried to fill him in all the details about where she worked and how their daughter Ava was getting on at school. They had dropped Olivia off at Kane Creations so she could check on the day’s takings. Cole slowly walked towards the unfamiliar house and stopped just outside the door. “Are you sure they want to see me?” Cole felt sick as he thought about seeing his children for the first time in years. He had asked Naomi eleven years previously not to bring the children to see him in the prison, he didn’t want them spend their childhoods visiting a prisoner. “Ava’s been so excited for weeks” Naomi avoided mentioning Noah. Cole smiled nervously “Does she know where I’ve been?” Naomi shook her head “I told her you’ve been working abroad” “She’s a smart girl Naomi, I’m sure she’s worked it out” “How about you just relax and celebrate being home again?” Naomi moved in close to Cole and kissed him “I have been waiting for this day for fifteen years” Cole took Naomi’s hand and they walked into the house. Cole felt emotional as he looked at all the photographs of Noah and Ava on the wall. He walked into the kitchen and was stunned to see balloons and a welcome home banner. A nervous young girl stood by the dining table which was filled with food; Cole let a tear fall as he took in the sight of his daughter, the girl he hadn’t seen since she was five years old. He walked towards her and smiled “Ava, you’re beautiful” Ava smiled “I’m glad you’re home Dad” Naomi was beaming at the sight of father and daughter together, she walked towards them and led them towards the table “Ava made a cake” Cole looked at the beautifully decorated cake on the table and smiled “I’m impressed” “Well, you haven’t tasted it yet” Ava joked. The front door slammed and Naomi walked into the hallway to greet her son Noah “I thought you weren’t going to show up” Noah shrugged “It’s my house, I can come and go when I please. I’m just getting changed and then I’m gone” “Please Noah, come and see your Dad” Before Noah had the chance to answer, Cole had joined them in the hallway “Noah” He smiled wistfully at his son all grown up “It’s good to see you” “I don’t have time for this” Noah frowned and disappeared upstairs. “He’s in a rush, don’t take it personally” Naomi put her hand on Cole’s shoulder to reassure him, but he shook it off and returned to the kitchen.
*
Michael Connor looked around the Crown and Horseshoe for his son Josh; finally he spotted him hidden away in the corner. “I hope that’s your application you’re filling in” Michael said as he walked up to his son, he picked up a pile of paper and dropped it on the floor so he could sit down. Josh rolled his eyes and sighed “I told you before Dad, I’m not going to fill it in” “You always wanted to join the police when you were a kid” Michael frowned, staring at his son in frustration. “No, you always wanted me to join the police” Josh pointed out, not taking his eyes away from the computer screen. “When are you going to stop writing all these stories and get back to the real world?” Michael asked, not hiding the annoyance in his voice. “Don’t you have shoplifters to catch?” Josh retorted back. Michael shook his head and stood up; he left walked out the pub leaving Josh to it. “You’re writing a book?” Chloe asked as she cleaned the tables near him “Sorry, I couldn’t help but overhear” Josh shrugged “It’s probably not very good” Chloe walked over to him and sat where Michael had been sat before “If you ever needed someone to take a look, I wouldn’t mind” Chloe offered. “Careful Chlo, I might end up taking you up on that”
*
Naomi and Cole were snuggled up on the sofa, while Ava had the other one to herself. They were watching the newest James Bond film, Ava was determined to introduce her father to all the latest films he had missed out on. Noah came through the front door and walked past the living room, he looked in and saw his mother, father and sister all sat comfortably with each other. He frowned, he resented his father just walking back in like he had never been away, he shook his head and walked back out the house. Noah started walking along the crescent and along the high street. He ended up stood outside the Crown and Horseshoe, he looked up at the windows above and began to throw stones at the third window on the left, after a few minutes he saw the light go on and Megan Hastings opened the window. “What do you want Noah?” Noah shrugged “I fancied some company” “I won’t let you do this to me again” Megan shouted angrily “You don’t get to pick me up and put me down again like I’m some toy” “Come on Megs, I got us some wheels” Noah smiled flirtatiously “Let’s head down to the beach” Megan couldn’t believe her ears, she disappeared for a moment and then returned “Do you even remember what you said to me last time I saw you? You said we were done, do you remember that Noah?” “I’m sorry” “Sorry isn’t good enough this time” Megan threw something out of the window at him “And you can have that back, it’s probably stolen anyway” Megan slammed the window shut and disappeared. Noah bent down and picked up the silver necklace, he stared at Megan’s window sadly until the light went out.
*
Cole lay wide awake; he looked over at the digital clock that was on the bedside table. It was two thirty in the morning. He sighed and sat up. Naomi was fast asleep next to him; she looked like she didn’t have a care in the world. Cole got up and crept down the stairs, he noticed something white fall through the letterbox, he bent down and picked up the envelope, it didn’t have a name on, but Cole opened it anyway. He gasped as the note contained cut out letters from the newspaper spelling out the word ‘Killer’. Cole opened the front door and ran out onto the driveway, he looked around the crescent, but it was completely deserted.

APPLECOBBLERA good start to the series and a really intriguing ending which came as a surprise and left me wondering what will happen now. The writing was believable throughout and, although occassionally the dialogue felt a tad melodramatic, it would be hard to guess that this was a new style of writing for you. I look forward to more
JOE High Hopes, yes indeed my hopes were high but Hannah they exceeded all my hopes. It was fantastic. The pacing and the stories were perfect. It all felt very natural. There was a huge sense of community in the first episode which is really hard to get in a new soap. I'm enjoying Cole and Naomi's family dramas and I can see this building into a huge story. Add Noah into the mix and it's going to be explosive. I quite like the Hastings too but I haven't seen enough of them yet. I also like the Spencer family set up, poor Siobhan, I'd say she is a good mum! The driving force at the moment is Cole's secret but you dripped in a nice few teasers too! Well done on a great first episode of High Hopes! Long may she reign!
HANNAH Thank you immensely AC and Jaay! I can't tell you how nervous I was posting the first episode and I am so relieved by the positive feedback, it's really spurred me on to make the next few episodes the best that I can do Thank you both for your support both here and for City Girls

1x02: 'We might as well give them a show' | Written by Hannah | Episode Two
Despite the sun being out and a gorgeous blue sky, the January morning was bitterly cold, but Heather Connor was too focused on her morning run to think of how cold it was. She waved as she ran past her neighbour and friend Siobhan Spencer and she carried on until she hit the high street. Heather slowed down as she reached the door of Last Minute Supermarket and she headed in to get a bottle of water. She greeted shop manager Katherine Lavery as she rushed past the counter. She returned with her bottle of water and Katherine asked her if she knew about the return of Naomi Donovan’s husband Cole. Heather was intrigued as Katherine described him as easy on the eye. Katherine continued to gossip and made it clear that she thought Naomi was being weak by letting him back into her life so easily. Katherine tried to pry for information about Naomi and Cole’s son Noah, Heather had represented Noah a few months before when he had been up for a burglary charge, she had managed to get him a suspended sentence. Heather avoided continuing the conversation and made her exit from the shop.
*
Kayla Macey was frantically cleaning the front room while fiancé Patrick Hale tried to relax and read the newspaper. Patrick urged Kayla to calm down and teased her for being so nervous. Kayla questioned how Patrick could be so relaxed about their latest meeting with the foster care authorities. Patrick stood up and took the polish and cloth away from Kayla. He reassured her that that had ticked all of the right boxes and that they would make amazing parents. Kayla hugged Patrick appreciatively, but his expression changed from a look of confidence to one of uncertainty.
*
Vicki Connor strutted confidently down the hallway of Canvey Comp, she was being followed by the usual girls who hung on her every word. Vicki stopped and stared at her friend Mia Faraday in annoyance. Mia was stood outside the English rooms talking intently to Anthony Spencer. “I wouldn’t bother with him if I was you Mia” Vicki said loudly from the other side of the corridor “It’s not true what they say about small packages” Vicki laughed and made a gesture with her little finger. Anthony blushed and walked away without a word. Mia sighed and walked over to join Vicki, Mia questioned Vicki’s attitude towards Anthony, but as usual Vicki was able to brush off Mia’s concerns.
*
Ava Donovan was sat in the sixth form common room, surrounded by pages of revision notes, she cursed as she suddenly realised the time. She quickly gathered up her things and tried to fit them in her bag. As she did this, Megan Hastings walked in. The atmosphere was tense as neither girl knew what to say to each other. Ever since Ava’s older brother Noah had dumped Megan, the friendship between the girls hadn’t been the same. Ava attempted to break the ice with Megan, but Megan complained about Noah’s behaviour the night before. Ava defended her brother and explained to Megan about their father’s return. Ava admitted to Megan that she missed their friendship and Megan admitted the same. Ava was pleased that she was beginning to mend bridges with Megan, she had to rush off for her tuition session with Mr Faraday but Ava promised to catch up with Megan later that day.
*
Siobhan Spencer finally finished stripping Faraday’s restaurant of its Christmas decorations, she looked sadly around the restaurant which now looked quite bare compared to before. “Back to normal then” Siobhan said to Sophia Faraday, the restaurant manager. Sophia mumbled an inaudible reply and Siobhan rolled her eyes. She never did get much conversation from Sophia. Sophia was one of those women who thought she was too good to be associated with a struggling single mum. Siobhan brightened up as she saw her best friend Naomi Donovan arrive at the restaurant with a handsome man on her arm. Siobhan greeted the couple and Naomi introduced her to her husband Cole. Siobhan exchanged pleasantries with Cole and took them over to a table in the corner. Siobhan left the couple to look at the menus and returned to the bar where Sophia was now stood watching Cole and Naomi intently.
*
Steven Faraday smiled as he finished checking biology student Ava’s test, he handed it back to her and her eyes brightened as she saw her mark. He congratulated her on her hard work and sat down next to her. He highlighted a few topics on her notes and found the relevant chapters in her text book, he explained that Ava still had some work to do, but assured her that she was on the right track. Ava thanked Steven appreciatively and suggested buying him a drink that night as a way to say thank you. Steven hesitated and struggled to know how to handle Ava’s request. He explained that he didn’t feel that it would be appropriate to socialise outside the school, but he appreciated the sentiment. Ava left the classroom feeling disappointed, while Steven felt worried about Ava’s obvious crush. However, Steven’s colleague Michelle Fox arrived and took his mind off his worries by seductively locking the classroom door and kissing him passionately on the lips.
*
It was early evening at the Crown and Horseshoe and Siobhan was exhausted after her afternoon shift at the restaurant, however, she didn’t get much time to rest as she began her shift behind the bar. Her eyes widened as her friend Kayla walked excitedly through the door. Siobhan asked Kayla how the meeting went and Kayla could barely contain her excitement and explained that the social worker said that they should expect a call over the next week.
*
Daniel Hastings was sat in the office of the Crown and Horseshoe pouring over bank statements, he cursed to himself as he realised the extent of his problems, however he was interrupted by his daughter Megan knocking on the door. Megan smiled sweetly and asked if she could get a few drinks from the bar for her and Ava. Daniel laughed as his daughter put on her usual puppy dog eyes, after seventeen years that trick still worked. Daniel agreed, but told Megan to take them upstairs “I have enough problems without getting done for underage drinking” He muttered to himself. “Thanks Daddy” Megan jogged over to her father and kissed him sloppily on the cheek.
*
Katherine finished the washing up and finally settled down in front of the television with her step grandson Anthony, she looked over at him and as he stared aimlessly at the screen. “Good day at school?” She asked, attempting the make conversation. “It was fine” Anthony grunted, the words barely audible. “My day was fine too thanks for asking” Katherine sighed and the room was filled with silence again.
*
It was a lost busier at the Crown and Horseshoe as Chloe Charles struggled to collected the never ending empty glasses from around the pub. Finally she made it back behind the bar and she helped Siobhan serve the queue of customers. Patrick and his new boss David Fields arrived at the pub for a pint, the atmosphere had been awkward between the two and David was determined to build a friendship with his fellow mechanic. David offered to buy Patrick a drink, but when Patrick spotted Kayla, he rejected David’s offer and went to join Kayla and her friend Lindsay. David ordered himself a pint of Fosters from Chloe and took a seat at the bar, he watched her working for a little while and as the bar quietened down, he finally managed to get her attention. David blushed as he asked Chloe out for dinner. Chloe was touched and tempted to say yes, but she explained that she was interested in someone else. David accepted Chloe’s answer graciously, even though he was disappointed.
*
Matthew Fitzgerald stood at the end of Canvey Lanes, staring at his new environment. He watched as Steven and his wife Sophia walked hand in hand up the path to the Crown and Horseshoe, while Siobhan left after finishing her shift. Matthew stepped back into the shadows as he noticed Naomi and Cole walking towards the pub, he stared wistfully at his former girlfriend and debated what to do next. Matthew decided against approaching the pub, he wasn’t ready to see to Naomi yet and he knew the last person she would ever expect to see again was him.
*
Naomi clung onto Cole’s hand as they walked into the pub for the first time. As they walked in, the noise slowly lowered and Naomi soon realised that everyone was looking. Naomi looked at Cole nervously, he smiled at her and kissed her on the lips. “We might as well give them a show” Cole whispered to his wife. The couple walked towards the bar and smiled at Chloe. Cole offered everyone in the pub a drink, much to Naomi’s concern. Cole shrugged “This is a new beginning remember, we might as well get the neighbours on side” Naomi nodded as neighbours began to crowd the couple, she watched her husband as he introduced himself to everyone. Naomi felt her phone vibrate in her pocket, she got it out and stared at the text message that lit up her phone ‘Bet they wouldn’t want a drink if they knew your husband was a killer’

CHLOEThe characters and stories in High Hopes are really detailed and well put together and it is plain how much work and time has gone into it
JESS The snippets of dialogue are effective and overall it was an excellent episode!
JOE I love High Hopes. It's a fantastic soap Hannah! Really well written, not too detailed but detailed enough. I like the touches of dialogue but I would prefer more. For the moment there is a lack of comedy which City Girls has in its dialogue, I think the comedy you produce is excellent as it comes from the characters so it will be brilliant when it's finally added to High Hopes. This isn't a criticism. Back to the story, who's stalking Naomi? I can't wait to find out. Who is Matthew? I really wanna know. Steven is having an affair, oh Sophia's nose will really be put out of joint won't it lol! Great episode Hannah! Looking forward to more!
HANNAH Thank you! I really appreciate all the feedback, it is really helping me to find a comfortable style for HH and I hope that the show continues to be enjoyed

1x03: 'This is what you call a wine hangover' | Written by Hannah | Episode Three
Heather Connor was rushing around the breakfast table trying to make sure that her three children were all fed before the school run, she put a plate of toast in the middle of the table as Vicki and Jake both sat down. Her oldest Josh yawned as he sat down, still in his pyjamas. Heather stared at Josh for a moment before asking him if he would be job hunting that day. Josh rolled his eyes and held up the local newspaper. He picked up a slice of toast and sat back in his chair, not feeling enthusiastic about his day. His father Michael dressed smartly in a suit walked in and kissed Heather quickly on the lips, he complained about running late and sarcastically asked if Josh needed a lift to the job centre. Again, Josh rolled his eyes and said that he would walk. “Make sure you do” Michael warned “This isn’t a doss house, you’re old enough to start paying your way”
*
Olivia Kane and her flatmate Chloe Charles were both lying on a sofa each, struggling to work up the motivation to move and get ready for the day ahead. Olivia had her hands covering her face and was moaning in frustration “This is what you call a wine hangover” “I told you that third bottle was a bad idea” Chloe giggled as she sat up. She closed her eyes tight to try and make the room stop spinning. She stood up awkwardly and laughed at Olivia, Chloe headed back to bed as she didn’t have to be in work until the afternoon. Olivia threw the cushion at Chloe as she walked past, she groaned at the sound of her phone ringing, she answered it in annoyance. Olivia listened to the person on the other end, Olivia sighed and told them she was on her way.
*
Sophia Faraday walked into the bedroom wearing a towel; she sat in front of her dressing table and began to towel dry her hair. She spun around to face her husband Steven who was still lying in bed. Sophia noticed the time and warned Steven that he would be late, Steven sat up and explained that he was on PPA time so he could go into work a little bit later. Sophia walked across the room to find her heat protector spray, as she walked back Steven playfully grabbed her arm and pulled her on top of him. She laughed as he kissed her and wondered why he was in a good mood. Steven smiled and stroked her hair “You’re really beautiful” Sophia teased her husband wondering what he had done wrong, Steven looked guilty and carried on kissing Sophia.
*
Megan Hastings sat in a cubicle in the sixth form girls’ toilets she was staring at the plastic bag in her lap, taking a deep breath Megan pulled a pregnancy test from the bag. She began to cry as she worked up the courage to take the test.
*
Noah Donovan was walking along the footpath towards the beach; he picked up a few stones and threw them out in front of him. He sat down on the bench and shivered as the cold wind hit him, he pulled out his iPhone and started going through his photos, he stared at the pictures of him and Megan before taking a deep breath and hitting the delete button. Their relationship was over, he was no good for her, her mother Lindsay had told him enough times. Megan deserved a lot better than him. Noah turned around as he heard a car pull up behind him; he frowned as he recognised the two men.
*
Olivia caught sight of her reflection in the salon window and cringed, dressed in tracksuit bottoms and her hair scraped into a messy bun, not exactly the appearance of a beauty therapist. Olivia signed the paper work and went to walk back into the salon, but stopped abruptly when the delivery driver went to get back into his van Olivia demanded to know where he was going but the driver just shook his head and drove off. Olivia began shouting after him “How am I supposed to get all those boxes inside? Look at these nails, they cost a fortune” Olivia blushed as she noticed a guy staring at her from across the road. Matthew Fitzgerald walked across the road laughing “You’re obviously the damsel in distress I’m meant to save” He joked. Olivia cringed as she thought about her unwashed hair, but she tried to forget about her awful appearance and graciously accepted Matthew’s offer. Matthew introduced himself and after about ten minutes, all the boxes were safely in the salon basement. Matthew laughed as he noticed Olivia trying fix her make up, he complimented her and asked her out for a drink. Matthew flirted with Olivia which she was enjoying very much, eventually Olivia agreed to a date “Seeing as you’re my knight in shining armour, you can pick me up at 8”
*
In the Crown and Horseshoe, Chloe took over a pint for Josh, who was sat in his regular corner in the pub concentrating on his laptop. She asked how his writing was going and he admitted that he was struggling. Chloe sat down with Josh and offered to read his work. Josh looked very unsure and admitted that he had never let anyone else read his work before. Chloe attempted to back track sensing that Josh felt a little uncomfortable, but he cut her off and accepted her offer. Chloe wrote her phone number down on a beer mat and invited Josh over that night. Chloe returned to work in a good mood while Josh tried to make sure his writing was good enough to impress.
*
Lindsay Hastings and her father Duncan Faraday were walking along the beach with Duncan’s golden retriever. Lindsay admitted that she was worried about her father being lonely, Duncan tried to convince Lindsay that he was happy with his life, but she wasn’t buying it. She tried to persuade him that he needed more balance between business and pleasure in his life. Lindsay teased him about socialising in his own restaurant and his daughter’s pub, but Duncan was adamant that he was happy with his life. Lindsay soon gave up and they continued to walk along the sand peacefully.
*
Michael finally walked through his front door, it had been a long day and he felt he had got nowhere with his latest case. He peered into the living room and greeted his youngest son Jake. Michael went into the kitchen where Heather was pouring a couple of glasses of wine, she handed him a glass and kissed him. Michael wondered where their two oldest children Josh and Vicki were and Heather admitted that she hadn’t seen Josh since breakfast and Vicki was staying over at her friend Mia’s. Michael sat with his arm around Heather and questioned what to do about Josh and his refusal to get a job. Heather refused to give him an ultimatum “I won’t see my son on the streets, every day I have to deal with defending drug addicts and criminals who were deserted by their parents; I won’t do that to my son” She explained. Michael didn’t answer, he didn’t have another solution. The couple carried on watching the television, both in silence.
*
Olivia walked into the Crown and Horseshoe expecting to find Chloe behind the bar and was disappointed to see Siobhan Spencer there instead. She ordered her usual vodka and cranberry and looked around the pub for someone she knew. Michelle Fox approached her and taunted her about drinking alone. Olivia rolled her eyes “We don’t all need constant attention Michelle, some of us are comfortable with our own company” Michelle struggled to find a bitchy comeback, but Olivia brushed her off before she had the chance. Michelle shrugged and walked away, complaining that Olivia was getting old and her comebacks weren’t as fun as they used to be.
Local garage owner David Fields attempted to cheer Olivia up “I’m not coming on to you by the way, you just look like you could do with some company” Olivia laughed and introduced herself to newcomer David. David observed that she seemed quite lonely and Olivia found herself confiding in David about her estrangement from her sister Naomi. She admitted that she had been getting to know her sister again, but now her husband was back in the picture, Olivia had been neglected. Olivia was beginning to feel better and she appreciated that David seemed to understand where she was coming from “A perfect stranger who can read me like a book. Can I get you a drink? And no, I’m not coming on to you” David laughed and invited Olivia to sit with him. He and Olivia sat at the bar chatting effortlessly for the rest of the evening.
*
Chloe finished reading the last paragraph of Josh’s work and felt impressed and touched that Josh shared his work with her. She woke Josh up, after he had fallen asleep on her sofa. She excitedly told him about how connected she felt to the concept and characters of his story. Josh questioned whether Chloe was just trying to make him feel good, but Chloe as adamant that Josh’s work was good enough to be published. Chloe leant in close to Josh and lightly kissed him on the lips. She moved backwards as she waited for a reaction, Josh stared at her for a moment before kissing her more passionately.

APPLECOBBLERAnother superb ep, High Hopes is really finding its feet. The Josh/Chloe cliffhanger was intriguing and there is a nice balance of dialogue and description. Well done JAMIE Super stuff, Hannah! Nice balance of dialogue and description , like AC mentioned. High Hopes is shaping up to be fantastic! HANNAH Thank you AC and Jamie! Still new to this style, so hopefully it's coming across okay
JOE High Hopes is still finding its feet, how ever at times for me it can be a bit curious. Like Megan Hastings doing the pregnancy test was only one scene in the whole episode. So that was slightly odd as that will be a huge story whether she is pregnant or not. Also, Olivia and Naomi's estrangement kinda came out of leftfield if that makes sense. Overall I did like the episode and the sense of solid family units is very well built. The characters really know their voices so well done! HANNAH Thank you Jaay I totally understand what you mean. I was trying to create a sense of mystery when it comes to Megan's storyline, but I think I failed, I've been working on her scenes in the next episode so hopefully that will make up for it. I don't think I wrote Olivia's scene clearly enough, it was more about the past estrangement that was referenced in the first episode and how Naomi has relied on Olivia over the years and now Cole is back in the picture, Olivia is feeling quite redundant and like a spare part
LEM I love the style of High Hopes, there's something gentle about it. I love the characterisation, and I do have a soft spot for Josh Connor! I cannot wait to see some of the bigger plots to develop HANNAH Thank you very much Lem I'm with you there regarding Josh Connor

1x04: 'A lady doesn't kiss and tell' | Written by Hannah | Episode Four
It was Friday evening on Canvey Island and the Crown and Horseshoe pub was already filled with people. Families enjoying dinner, couples enjoying a romantic drink and friends celebrating making it through to the end of another week. Someone who didn’t have that Friday feeling was Noah Donovan who was sat in a car with an old friend Adam Thompson. Adam wanted Noah’s help with a job, but Noah didn’t want to get involved. He was desperate to prove he could be the man that his former girlfriend Megan Hastings deserved, but Adam reminded Noah that he owed his father Tommy for going to prison for a crime that Noah was guilty of. Noah knew Adam was right, he did owe Tommy. Noah had made a big mistake when he assumed that a man was hassling his girlfriend Megan. Noah had lost his temper and almost beat the guy to death, at the time Noah had been relieved that Tommy had taken the rap, but eventually he realised that Tommy and Adam now had a permanent hold over him.
*
Megan Hastings was lying on her bed listening to her music blaring, she was in tears as she thought about the pregnancy test she had shoved to the back of her drawer. She sat up and retrieved it, she stared again at the word ‘pregnant’ on the little screen. She had hoped that the words had changed from the last time she looked, but Megan knew she was being quite naïve.
*
Olivia Kane admired her reflection in the mirror as she applied her red lipstick, her friend and flatmate Chloe Charles was trying to get the gossip about her date. Olivia tried to explain, but she admitted that Matthew was a bit of a mystery to her, but she was looking forward to getting to know him. Chloe feigned jealousy over Olivia’s hot date, but Olivia teased her back “Don’t you play all innocent Chloe Charles” Olivia pointed her finger jokingly “I heard your guest leaving very early this morning” Chloe smiled cheekily “A lady doesn’t kiss and tell” Olivia turned around to face Chloe “What’s your excuse then?” Chloe slapped Olivia on the bum as she walked past “Cheeky cow” Chloe returned a minute later holding out a bottle of perfume towards Olivia, she told her to try it. Olivia took the bottle and sprayed the perfume into the air, she sniffed it and nodded. Chloe told her to wear it on her date and Olivia thanked her. As they continued to gossip about Matthew, their conversation was interrupted by the sound of the door. Olivia complained that Matthew was early and struggled to find her shoes. Chloe rushed to the door, muttering about Matthew having to have her seal of approval before she’ll let him take Olivia out. Chloe poured Matthew a glass of wine while he waited for Olivia, finally she made an appearance. Matthew looked Olivia up and down approvingly as she did a little twirl for him. Chloe stood at the front door as Olivia left with Matthew “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do” Chloe teased, Olivia turned around and laughed “That would be a very short list then”
*
Daniel Hastings was stood outside at the back of the Crown and Horseshoe smoking a cigarette. He was surprised to see two hooded men approach him, the first one pulled down his hood. Daniel frowned and stubbed his cigarette out against the wall and threw it on the floor. Adam moved in closer to Daniel menacingly as Daniel admitted that he didn’t have the money that he owed Adam’s father Tommy “Are you telling me that I have to go back to my Dad empty handed? Do you think he’s gonna be impressed? He’s already given you an extension” Adam glared at Daniel as he tried to defend himself. Without any warning, Adam punched Daniel in the stomach sending him falling to the ground, Adam looked around and warned Noah to man up. Noah stared at Daniel in shock, it was different hitting some you didn’t know or didn’t like, but this was his neighbour who he did actually have respect for. Adam glared at Noah, who began to kick Daniel hard in the back.
*
Siobhan Spencer offered Josh Connor another drink as she walked past him sitting at his usual table in the Crown and Horseshoe. When he didn’t answer, Siobhan tapped him on the shoulder bringing him out of his daydream. She asked him why he looked troubled and he admitted that he had made a mistake and now he was worried that someone was going to get hurt. Siobhan was sympathetic and advised Josh just to be honest. Josh thanked Siobhan and thought about what he was going to say to Chloe next time he saw her.
*
Daniel stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror; he used the cotton wool to clean the blood from his eyebrow and winced as he clutched his ribs in pain. He slowly took off his shirt and sighed as he saw the extensive bruising that was appearing on his body. He tried to cover himself up as he heard footsteps coming from the hallway, but his injuries meant that he wasn’t quick enough. Lindsay dived towards her husband and lightly touched the side of his stomach, Daniel winced in pain as Lindsay demanded to know what had happened. Daniel lied to Lindsay and told her that he was mugged, he didn’t want to admit the truth about his money problems. Lindsay was ready to call the police, but Daniel protested claiming that nothing was taken. She helped Daniel to the bedroom and was still wanted to report the incident to the police, however Daniel was adamant and warned Lindsay that he didn’t want the police involved.
*
Round the back of the Crown and Horseshoe, where just a few hours earlier Daniel was viciously beaten up, Steven Faraday was stood alone waiting. He jumped as his lover Michelle Fox surprised him and turned around and laughed. Steven tried to talk to Michelle about their future, but Michelle cut him off by kissing him. The couple kissed passionately, but what they didn’t realise was that the alley behind the pub wasn’t as secluded as they thought.
Upstairs from Megan Hastings’ bedroom window, her best friend Ava Donovan could see everything. Ava recoiled in shock as she realised who the two people were, she closed her eyes tight and opened them again, hoping that it was just a day dream, but it wasn’t. Steven and Michelle were still there with their hands all over each other.
*
Olivia and Matthew walked hand in hand into the Crown and Horseshoe after enjoying a lovely dinner at Faradays, Olivia sat down at a table while Matthew went over to the bar and ordered them some drinks. After a few minutes he joined her, Olivia smiled as she sipped her wine. All was going well so far. Olivia encouraged Matthew to talk more about himself, she was interested when he revealed that he had become a partner in Heather Connor’s law firm. Olivia admitted that Heather had helped her nephew with his legal issues so she had a lot of respect for her. Matthew flirted with Olivia and proposed a toast to their second date, Olivia laughed as she reminded Matthew that she hadn’t actually agreed to a second date “But you’re going to, how could you not?” Matthew teased and sweetly took Olivia’s hand and kissed it. Olivia picked up her glass of wine and smiled “Ok, a toast to our second date” Olivia finished as they clinked their glasses together.
*
Megan and Ava were sat at the bar in the Crown and Horseshoe, but Megan was getting increasingly irritated by Ava’s bad mood. Megan jumped up and walked around to the other side of the bar to get some drinks. Ava convinced Megan to add some vodka to their cokes. Megan agreed after making sure that both her mother Lindsay and barmaid Siobhan were busy. Megan hesitated when adding the vodka to her own drink, she decided against the alcohol and just gave Ava back hers. As Megan got back to her seat, Lindsay came over and asked Megan to go and check on Daniel, who was in bed recovering from his beating. Megan protested, but agreed. Ava downed her drink and sat staring into space, she then called Lindsay over and asked for her advice. Ava confided in Lindsay that she had feelings for a guy who was seeing someone else. Lindsay tried to make Ava feel better by encouraging her to hang in there “I think if you really like him, you should hang in there and wait for him to realise that this other woman is the wrong one” Lindsay noticed the look of disappointment on Ava’s face “I know that doesn’t really help you right now” Ava thanked Lindsay for her advice and noticed Steven standing in the corner of the pub with some of the other teachers from Canvey Comp.
*
Noah was stood outside the Crown and Horseshoe where he was joined by Tommy and Adam. All three men were dressed in black hoodies and Noah frowned when Adam passed him a balaclava, Adam reminded Noah that they couldn't be recognised by anyone “I don’t see why we need to do this, Daniel got the message loud and clear earlier on” The usually cool Tommy lost his temper and threw Noah against the wall “I decide when Daniel Hastings has got the message” Tommy held Noah for a while before letting him go. He walked back over the boot of his car and pulled out two baseball bats and threw them at Adam and Noah. He then pulled out a gun and put it at the back of his jeans. Noah questioned Tommy about the gun and panicked that he was out of his depth. Tommy threw Noah to the ground and warned him to do as he was told, he reminded him that it was too late to back out now.
*
The atmosphere in the Crown and Horseshoe was calm and relaxed, but that soon ended. Three hooded men crashed into pub smashing everything in sight with baseball bats. The screaming pierced the air as one of the men stepped forward and fired a gun shot at the ceiling. Landlady Lindsay Hastings cried in fear as she witnessed her livelihood descend into chaos.

APPLECOBBLERThis was another enjoyable episode of High Hopes. The siege was very sudden and it is certainly an explosive plot for the project, although IMO not one of the strongest moments to date. Overall good work
JESS The siege is actually shaping up to be a great starting point for the show! The show really will benefit from the plot happening so soon into its run, as it has completely attracted viewer attention! Noah is probably my favourite character so far, although how his character transforms beyond the siege storyline could change my view of him!
JOE The biggest storyline to date did not disappoint. Beautifully plotted and well paced, actually really well paced. It was an easy read but a very gripping and enjoyable read. Best episode to date. Well done Hannah and I can not wait for the climax of the siege!
HANNAH Thank you very much AC, Jess and Joe I feel very excited for this story. It was the first storyline I had decided on, but I didn't want it to happen straight away because I wanted you to get to know the characters a little first. I just hope the next episode lives up to expectations and does the characters justice

1x05: 'We couldn't let the knight in shining armour die before a kiss from the damsel in distress' | Written by Hannah | Episode Five
Outside the sky was crisp and clear, the atmosphere on Canvey Island was quiet and deserted, apart from the few odd people rushing around in the cold to get home. However, little did they know inside the residents’ safe haven the Crown and Horseshoe pub, tragedy was imminent and Canvey Island would never be the same.
Three hooded men crashed into pub smashing everything in sight with baseball bats. The screaming pierced the air as one of the men stepped forward and fired a gun shot at the ceiling. Landlady Lindsay Hastings cried in fear as she witnessed her livelihood descend into chaos.
*
Tommy Thompson stood in the middle of the pub as his son Adam and accomplice Noah Donovan locked every door of the pub. Tommy ordered a terrified Steven Faraday and Josh Connor to move all the tables to create a big space in the middle of the pub. He screamed at everyone to sit down and put their phones into a bucket. Everybody did as they were told and the pub was finally silent as Adam and Noah took their places by Tommy’s side. Noah looked around the pub and his hardened stance faltered when he realised that his little sister Ava was sat next to Steven. “Stand up!” Tommy’s deep voice broke the silence as he pointed to Lindsay and gestured for her to stand up. Terrified by the gun pointing at her Lindsay did as she was told. Her whole body was shaking and she couldn’t control it. Tommy passed a bag to Adam and nodded his head. He ordered Lindsay to put the money from the till into the bag; she was frozen to the spot at first until Adam grabbed her arms and threw her towards the bar. He followed her as she made her way to the till and watched her as she emptied it into the bag. He roughly pushed Lindsay back around the bar and demanded she take him to the safe.
*
Siobhan Spencer was sat shaking like a leaf in the middle of the floor, she watched in horror as her boss Lindsay was thrown around by one of the men. She closed her eyes tight to try and stop the tears forming; she jumped as she felt a hand on her shoulder. She was relieved when she opened her eyes to see Josh trying to comfort her. She grabbed hold of his hand tightly and welcomed his arm around her.
*
Olivia Kane slowly crawled across the floor so she could be close to her niece Ava, she cradled her in her arms as the young seventeen year old began to cry, a protective Steven tried to comfort them both by putting his arm around them. Olivia’s date Matthew Fitzgerald moved so that he was close to Olivia, she looked at him with fear on his face as he tried to look brave, but he felt just as frightened as she was.
*
Adam pushed Lindsay along the hallway into the office; once they were through the door he pushed her hard against the wall. He laughed cruelly as she stared at him in disgust. He roughly pushed her hair away from her face and kissed her on the cheek “Just think of the fun we could have in here” Adam taunted. “Not a chance in hell” Lindsay kicked Adam hard in the groin and ran across the room to the telephone, she dialled 999, but before she could get a response Adam had caught up with her. He slapped her violently across the face and held her arms tight. “You’re going to listen to me you stuck up bitch” Adam threatened “Put the money in the bag otherwise I’m going to let my friend in there put a bullet straight through your brain” Lindsay pleaded with Adam to put a stop to the situation, but he menacingly repeated his demands.
*
As Adam forced Lindsay back into the pub, her daughter Megan crept down the stairs and peered around the doorway. Megan gasped as she saw the three hooded men breaking glasses and throwing chairs around. She was shaking as she realised that one of them was holding a gun. Megan crept to the phone and quietly called the police. She begged for help, but before she knew it a hand forced the phone out of her hand and Tommy manhandled her into the pub. He threw her across the room as her mother Lindsay screamed and Noah almost blew his cover when he grabbed Tommy’s arm to stop him. Tommy continued to push Megan around, silently taunting Noah by reminding him who was in charge. Megan pleaded with Tommy to stop, she screamed as he threw her to the ground and stood over her, Megan cried out when Tommy went to pick her up “Please don’t hurt me, I’m pregnant” She squealed in terror. Noah rushed forward and pulled Megan away from Tommy, she was shaking when Noah let her go. Tommy glared at him, beginning to worry that Noah was about to ruin everything “Sit down over there” He barked at Megan. She did as she was told and dove into her mother’s arms, Lindsay cradled her terrified daughter as Noah began to pace around the pub, struggling to contain his distress.
*
Thirty minutes had passed and the hostages were sat barely moving from a mixture of numbness and fear, they watched as the three men argued between themselves wondering what their next move was. While they were preoccupied, Josh and Steven whispered to each other, they were trying to work out how to overpower the three men. Siobhan tried to persuade them that it was a bad idea, but the men were determined to get the power back. Steven looked to Matthew for help and eventually he agreed. He turned to Olivia and pulled her into a kiss “We couldn’t let the knight in shining armour die before a kiss from the damsel in distress” Matthew tried to joke, but he couldn’t hide the fear in his voice. As Steven got ready to move, Ava grabbed hold of his arm “Be careful” She pleaded and Steven nodded.
*
Steven and Josh caught Tommy and Adam by surprise as they tackled them to the ground, Matthew made a move towards Noah, but he backed off and in a panic escaped through the cellar. Matthew pinned Adam up against the wall, while Steven attempted to get the gun from Tommy, however in the scuffle Tommy was able to hit Steven over the head with the gun. Ava screamed in horror as Steven fell to the floor, Josh tried to wrestle the gun away from Tommy, but in the commotion the gun went off several times. Screams filled the air and Tommy looked horrified as bodies fell to the floor. He regained his composure and ordered Josh and Matthew to sit back down over wise he would shoot them in cold blood.
*
Olivia screamed as she tried to stop Ava’s bleeding, she had been shot in the side underneath her ribs and was bleeding out rapidly. Matthew dived to Olivia’s side and covered Ava’s bleeding with his jacket. Megan howled in distress as she realised her mother Lindsay had been shot in the stomach and was drifting in and out of consciousness. Megan pleaded for help as Siobhan and Josh tried to calm her down.
*
Adam panicked as he realised the extent of the situation, Tommy shouted at him to calm down, he needed to decide their next move. Adam pleaded with Tommy to leave before the police arrived and in the distance, they could hear the sirens as the armed police made their way to the pub. Tommy stared at the chaos in the pub that he had caused and gestured for Adam to follow him as they looked for a way out at the back of the pub.
*
Steven opened his eyes and immediately felt dizzy; he sat up and struggled to comprehend the cries and screams surrounding him. He instantly raced to his sister Lindsay’s side as he realised she had been shot. Steven clung to her hand and begged her to keep her eyes open. Steven noticed Matthew trying to stop Ava’s bleeding; he looked at Lindsay and ordered Megan to make sure she stayed awake. He raced over to Ava and tried to help Matthew. Matthew let Steven take over as he tried to calm down Olivia down “It’s going to be ok” He promised and kissed her on the forehead. Steven urged Ava to hang on and stay awake, but she was drifting in and out of consciousness “I won’t let you die on me Ava, I’ve worked too hard to get your grades up” Ava laughed weakly “Please don’t leave me” She pleaded. Steven held her and promised to stay with her “I love you Steven” Ava whispered as she fell unconscious. Steven tried to shake Ava, but she wasn’t waking up. Olivia knelt down next to her niece and begged her to open her eyes “Ava, you have to wake up. Your mother will never forgive me if I let you leave us” Olivia sobbed, she tried to pull Ava towards her, but Steven stopped her “I promised her that I would stay with her” Olivia took Ava’s hand and held it tightly as she screamed for help.
*
The police stormed through the pub, taking in the damage and the casualties that lay in front of them, Olivia and Megan were screaming for help as they tried to keep Ava and Lindsay alive, while Josh struggled to calm down a sobbing Siobhan, who had broken down in tears of devastation. Once the police had determined that the pub was clear, they finally allowed the paramedics in to see to the injured.
*
Outside the Crown and Horseshoe, a crowd had formed behind the police cordons. Each person had a look of disbelief and devastation on their face as the rumours circulated about the events that had happened that night. The atmosphere was quiet as no one knew what to say, but it was certain that the lives of those who lived on Canvey Island would never be the same, both those who were inside the Crown and Horseshoe that night and those who weren’t.
Cast (In Order of Appearance):Lindsay Hastings: Kim Medcalf Thomas "Tommy" Thompson: Billy Murray Adam Thompson: Lee Warburton Noah Donovan: David Witts Steven Faraday: William Ash Joshua "Josh" Connor: Neil McDermott Ava Donovan: Madeline Duggan Siobhan Spencer: Alexandra Fletcher Olivia Kane: MyAnna Buring Matthew Fitzgerald: Tom Lister Megan Hastings: Danielle Harold

APPLECOBBLERA good instalment here and the siege will definitely have an impact on the island over the weeks and even months to come. I did feel that the episode was very long (i.e. a break could have helped with regards to formatting) and the atmosphere was a tad sensationalist. However overall it worked well, and the aftermath should be great LEM I loved the drama within this episode, the whole siege set-up was great. Once again, the writing was fantastic, and even though some may find it a tad long, I thought it was fine - both quality and quantity! My two favourites are Josh and Lindsay. I hope she doesn't die! HANNAH Thank you so much AC and Lem The aftermath will definitely be felt by everyone for a while to come. As for episode length, apologies if the episode felt long, word count wise it was pretty much the same as the usual episodes. To be fair, I have compared word counts with most of the projects on here to give me an idea how much to write and I've found HH to be shorter in length than most
JOE Oh that was gripping from start to finish! Really enjoyable. The drama built nicely and didn't drag. The writing was excellent and it was a highly tense atmosphere. The aftermath will be brilliant to watch unfold. It stands at the moment as one of the best episodes of High Hopes. Well done Hannah. And to be fair, I think the format in which you write High Hopes and City Girls is great as it's not too long and easy to read. Some of the other projects on here as you say are long and can be at times hard to read as their length is long, but I think High Hopes is perfect HANNAH Thank you very much Joe, I really appreciate your feedback I am really proud of the direction of High Hopes so far, I'm still getting used to writing for such a large cast and I can't wait for you to see the development of the characters I have in my head

1x06: 'This isn't a choice' | Written by Hannah | Episode Six
It had been almost twenty four hours since the chaos that hit the Crown and Horseshoe pub and the residents of Canvey Island were still reeling. Noah Donovan stood across the road from the boarded up pub and stared in guilt as he thought about his involvement the night before. Noah struggled to breathe as he thought about his younger sister Ava lying in a hospital bed, she could have died and he was at least partly responsible for that “Noah?” A voice startled him and he sighed as his father walked up to him and put his hand on his shoulder. Cole explained that he was heading home to get some clothes and toiletries for Ava, but Noah wasn’t really listening to what he was saying. Noah began to walk away, but Cole stopped him “You don’t have to keep pushing me away Noah” Noah shook off his father’s hand and pushed him away furiously “You don’t know me” Noah screamed and pushed Cole again, Cole took every shove until Noah finally broke down.
*
Katherine Lavery was sat in the hospital corridor holding onto her cup of coffee for warmth, it wasn’t particularly cold in the hospital, but Katherine had been shivering constantly since the phone call the night before telling her that her only daughter Siobhan Spencer had been caught up in the pub siege. That sense of your child being in danger is the worst feeling in the world and Katherine knew that feeling much too well, she remembered sitting by Siobhan’s bedside all those years ago after the car accident that killed Siobhan’s husband Robert. She couldn’t believe that she was back here again, but she knew Siobhan had been lucky this time, a few stitches and a night of observation, and Siobhan was almost ready to be discharged. Katherine looked up to see her boss Duncan Faraday walking aimlessly down the corridor in her direction, she stood up and rushed over to him “How’s Lindsay?” She asked, knowing exactly how worried he must be about his daughter. The usually strong Duncan crumbled as he tried to speak, but he couldn’t find the words. Katherine pulled him into a hug and just whispered that it was going to be ok.
*
It was unusually quiet in Last Minute supermarket, but Kayla Macey wasn’t feeling very surprised, the atmosphere on Canvey Island was very sombre and the residents were avoiding leaving their homes as much as possible. Kayla straightened up as Matthew Fitzgerald walked in and straight over to the selection of flowers. “I heard they haven’t caught them yet” Kayla mentioned as Matthew came over to the till. Matthew ignored her and handed over the money “No one is going to feel safe until those men are safely in a cell” Kayla carried on “Let’s just hope I don’t get to them first” Matthew warned and walked out.
*
Steven Faraday sat with his family as they waited for news about his sister Lindsay Hastings, his head was banging from his injury, but Lindsay was back in surgery and his headache was the last of his concerns. Across the hallway, Lindsay’s husband Daniel was holding their daughter Megan tightly, he was being eaten up by his guilt as he remembered his confrontation with Adam Thompson a few days before, he was sure that his failure to make his repayment was connected to the events the night before. Daniel and Megan practically pounced on the surgeon as he rushed towards them, they frantically questioned him about Lindsay, but he silenced them “Lindsay’s condition is serious” He explained “We have to perform a hysterectomy. If there was any other option Mr Hastings then we would do it, but this is Lindsay’s only chance for survival” Daniel shook his head in disbelief “Lindsay has always wanted to have another baby” The Doctor explained that he needed Daniel’s permission as he was next of kin “How can I take this away from her?” Daniel questioned. Duncan slammed his fist against the wall “My little girl is dying in there, this isn’t a choice Daniel” Daniel looked at Megan in tears and then back at the Doctor “Ok, do what you have to”
*
Matthew stood outside the flat of Olivia Kane holding red roses, finally she answered the door, but Matthew was taken aback to see the usually confident Olivia cowering as she opened the door slowly “How are you doing? How’s Ava?” Matthew questioned as Olivia let him through. Olivia explained that Ava was doing well, but before she could finish her sentence she broke down in tears “I just keep replaying everything in my head, every time I close my eyes I can see that faceless man holding a gun. We could have died” Olivia sobbed, Matthew pulled her close to him and stroked her hair “But we didn’t Olivia, we are both here and we are both safe, I think we should stop wasting time” Matthew pulled Olivia into a passionate kiss “I’ve been wanting to do that since the moment I met you” Matthew teased, Olivia smiled “Well, I’ve been wanting you to do that since I met you” Matthew and Olivia kissed more passionately and Olivia led him towards the bedroom.
*
In Faradays restaurant, manager Sophia Faraday was watching the bar get busier, but while most managers would be happy to see their profits improve, Sophia felt sad because she knew it was because of the closure of the Crown and Horseshoe after the previous night. Sophia was surprised to see Steven walk in. She asked him how Lindsay was and Steven sighed sadly “She’s still unconscious” Steven sat down at the far end of the bar and let his head fall into his hands “She’s going to be devastated Soph, she always wanted more children and now…” Steven couldn’t finish the sentence. “Lindsay will get through this, she’s strong, like her brother” Sophia tried to comfort her husband. She reminded him that he had to think about himself as well, Steven admitted that he was troubled and worried about Ava. Steven hesitated for a moment “I think I’ve got myself into a mess, I thought I was helping her with the tutoring and spending so much time with her, but it’s gone too far Soph” Sophia stared at Steven, she felt nervous and worried about what he was about to say. Steven grabbed her hand “Ava told me she loved me” Steven shook his head, wondering how he let it get so far, Sophia held onto Steven’s hand and felt sympathetic “You’re a great guy Steven and you’re kind of good looking, female students are going to test the boundaries, but you have to sort this before it gets any further. Ava’s a smart girl, she must know that nothing would ever happen between you. Besides, you’re married to me, I wouldn’t let you go without a fight” Sophia smiled, trying to lighten the mood.
*
Katherine led Siobhan into the house and told her to sit down while she made her a hot cup of tea, Siobhan’s stepson Anthony and daughter Emily hugged her tightly, both relieved to see her. Siobhan was taken aback when Emily burst into tears “Honey, it’s ok” Siobhan tried to comfort the young girl “I’m ok, you don’t have to be afraid” Siobhan hugged Emily tightly and tried to hide the tears that were forming in her own eyes. “What if they come back?” Anthony suddenly spoke up, the fear obvious in his own eyes. Siobhan looked at her mother apprehensively as she came back into the room with the tea. Katherine put the cups down and pulled Anthony into a hug “Those men are going to be long gone, we have nothing to worry about” Katherine tried to reassure her family, but Siobhan knew Katherine well enough to know that she wasn’t entirely sure either.
*
Naomi Donovan woke up suddenly to the sound of Ava’s machines, she sighed with relief when she realised it was just a nurse changing a setting. Naomi lent forward and stroked the sleeping Ava’s hair, she whispered to her daughter “You’re safe now sweetheart, I won’t let anyone else hurt you ever again” She promised. Naomi began to softly cry as the realisation hit her that she had almost lost both her sister and her daughter all in one night. Cole walked into Ava’s hospital room and noticed Naomi’s distress, he walked briskly over to her and pulled her close. “It’s ok to be scared babe” Cole gently kissed Naomi on the forehead, Naomi began to cry harder into Cole’s chest “We could have lost our little girl” Cole held onto Naomi tightly as he let her cry, he looked over at his daughter as she slept peacefully “She’s safe now” Cole whispered.
*
Daniel and Megan sat silently at Lindsay’s bedside as she recovered from surgery, neither dared to speak, knowing how devastated Lindsay would be when Daniel has to deliver the news that she will never have any more children. Megan felt guilty sitting there knowing that she was carrying a child inside her that she didn’t want. Megan began to cry as she thought about the situation they were in, Daniel tried to comfort his daughter, but he was shocked when she pushed him away angrily. “She’s going to hate me Dad” Megan cried “For so long she has wanted another baby and you always said it wasn’t the right time and now it won’t ever happen” Daniel tried to calm Megan down “None of this is your fault Megan, this is all a tragic…” He stopped, he couldn’t quite call it an accident. “You don’t understand Dad, I’m pregnant, I’m having a baby and it should have been her” Megan cried as Daniel stared at her in astonishment.

APPLECOBBLERMore interesting developments, with a strong aftermath to the siege (in fact I preferred the aftermath to the siege itself). The cliffhanger packed a strong emotional punch and the ep as a whole was cohesive and nicely crafted JOE Oh Hannah, you've hit the jackpot darling, that was superb. It was well paced and beautifully told. Aftermath episodes are hard to write but you totally pulled it off. The stories are building nicely. Megan being pregnant is a huge turning point for the Hastings family. And to be fair I actually like Steven and Sophia together. But his affair with Michelle and Ava's infatuation with him I'm sure will lead to more drama. Well done darling LEM A great follow-up episode to the pub siege. I loved the emotional family based drama within this episode, and it proves how much of a versatile writer you are - ranging from plot-lead drama to character-lead drama I'm glad Lindsay is alive, whilst I'm heartbroken for her as a character that she can no longer have children, it will prove great drama alongside her daughter's pregnancy HANNAH Thank you very much AC, Joe and Lem I really appreciate your comments. I'm proud of this episode as I wanted it to have more of a calm but emotional feel to it and everyone struggling to comprehend what has happened

1x07: 'I don’t like hot milk but I’ll eat the cookies' | Written by Joe | Episode Seven
Early morning on Canvey Island, it’s been two days since the dramatic siege at the Crown and Horseshoe public house. One of the victims of the terrible event was Siobhan Spencer. Lying in her bed, Siobhan jumps when she hears a noise she doesn’t recognise. Making her way out of her bed, she fidgets with the sleeves of her night gown. Slowly creeping towards the door of her bedroom, she can hear footsteps getting faster and more erratic approaching her door. She begins to panic as she looks for a way out, her panicking is getting unbearable and her breathing is starting to get fast, she can’t catch her breathe. Suddenly the door swings open, “Surprise” shouts Siobhan’s 12 year old daughter Emily holding a breakfast tray for her mother.
* Out on the beach, walking alone the coastline of Canvey Island, Matthew Fitzgerald and Olivia Kane are walking hand in hand. She is smiling as is Matthew. “I can’t stop grinning, I feel like a school girl” gushes Olivia. Matthew makes a joke about their night together and tells Olivia he’s there are many more to come.
* At the Last Minute Supermarket, Kayla and Patrick are talking about the siege and terrible is that their local pub, their friend would be put through something as traumatic as that when Steven Faraday walks in. Kayla then applauds him for his bravery during the siege. As Steven tries to shy away from the praise, Michelle Fox, who is currently embroiled in an affair with Steven, walks in. Steven then makes his way to the check out before leaving quickly as Michelle stands watching him.
* At the hospital, Daniel Hastings is walking along a corridor, holding a coffee. As he takes a sip from it, he has a look of disgust on his face. He then throws the coffee in the bin. Finally he reaches the nurses desk and asks the nurse if his wife Lindsay who was shot during the siege and had to have a hysterectomy due to her injuries has been told yet about her hysterectomy. The nurse informs that she hasn’t but her doctor will be along shortly to do so. Daniel then tells the nurse that he will inform his wife of it.
* After their strange encounter earlier that morning, Siobhan and Emily are enjoying some lunch which Siobhan has prepared. Emily begins to eat quietly before Siobhan begins telling Emily that she had a bad dream last night about the siege. Emily just gently nods. As Siobhan prepares to make a cup of tea, she stares out the kitchen window. Lost in her own world, she fails to hear Emily telling her that the kettle is boiled, “Mum, it’s boiled…MUM….MUM” shouts Emily, causing Siobhan to revert back to the screaming and shouting of the siege. Snapping back into reality, Siobhan turns on her daughter, “Shut up” screams Siobhan causing Emily to run from the room in tears.
* At the beach, sitting on a bench, Duncan Faraday is staring at the waves when his grand-daughter Mia joins him. As Duncan wipes his tears away, Mia smiles at him and gives him a hug. She then suggests, to take his mind off things, they should make a sandcastle. As the duo head for the beach laughing, Matthew and Olivia walk past. Duncan then calls after them and challenges them to a contest. Laughing, Matthew and Olivia agree and all four begin making sand castles.
* Sitting beside his wife’s bed, Daniel is sobbing to himself when Lindsay begins to wake. As she smiles faintly at her husband, he begins to slowly laugh while still crying. He stands up and hugs his wife into an embrace. “Easy…I feel like a pin cushion” says Lindsay before giving Daniel a gentle kiss. He then looks at his wife full of guilt and sighs. “I need to tell you something, I’m so sorry Linds” begins Daniel as Lindsay begins to worry, “Megan, oh my god, where’s Megan?” asks a panicked Lindsay before Daniel tells her that their daughter is fine. “It’s something else” says Daniel as his voice begins to croak.
* Over at the Connors, Heather Connor is fussing over her son Josh who was also a victim of the siege. As she makes him some soup, she then sits watching him. “Mum, I’m not a 10year boy with a sore throat” jokes Josh before a knock is heard at the door. Heather opens the door to Chloe Charles, barmaid at the Crown and Horseshoe. While Chloe makes her way into the lounge, Heather says she’ll put the kettle on. Chloe then greets Josh with a big hug and smiles at him sympathetically.
* Later, that evening, Siobhan knocks gently on Emily’s door. As she slowly walks into the room, Emily is sitting on her bed, playing her IPod and reading a book. Siobhan smiles and holds out a plate of cookies and hot milk. Emily however doesn’t respond. Siobhan then apologizes to Emily for her behaviour earlier. She’s having a bad day, she’s worried about Lindsay and the siege is playing heavily on her mind. Emily then hugs her Mum and whispers in her ear, “I don’t like hot milk but I’ll eat the cookies”. Both girls then giggle.
* Back at the Connors, Heather is chatting to husband Michael about his day at work but only half-heartedly as she tentatively watches over Josh. In the lounge, Chloe is telling Josh how a traumatic event like a siege and how awful the siege must have been, that feeling of being trapped and scared can trigger all sorts of disorders as the victims of it try to come to terms with what has happened. “Oh it will probably totally help with you writing” smiles an enthusiastic Chloe. Josh however is unimpressed. “Can you stop…just stop…I’m fine, I’m not a victim. Yea the siege was horrible but look at poor Lindsay…I got off lightly” snaps Josh before asking Chloe to leave.
* Still sitting by Lindsay’s bed, Daniel begins to talk to Lindsay about how the doctors had to perform an emergency hysterectomy on her after her injuries from the shooting worsen. As Lindsay reels from the shock, she sits there in silence, staring at her husband, anger and sorrow building up in her. “They needed my permission Lindsay…I’m so sorry…” begins Daniel, “You told them…You…That they could take my womb” pushes Lindsay as Daniel nods as tears fall from his face, “You…betrayed me…How could you Daniel?” begs a distressed Lindsay, “Why?” cries Lindsay.
*
That night as Siobhan is preparing to go to bed, she notices that Anthony hasn’t out the rubbish out like she told him too. As she begins muttering to herself about how she has to do everything in the house, her mother Katherine Lavery enters the kitchen. As Siobhan tells Katherine about Anthony not putting out the rubbish, Katherine throws her eyes to heaven, “That’s teenagers for you, you were the very same” says Katherine before saying good night to Siobhan and heading up stairs. Siobhan then makes her way over to the door but she places her hand on the door handle, she becomes frozen in fear. Shaking herself, she opens the door, but stalls again. Her breathing becomes fast again, her palms are sweating, she’s beginning to panic again, “I can’t…I can’t” whispers Siobhan as she drops the rubbish, slams the door and cowers in the corner, crying.

APPLECOBBLERWell done Joe on becoming part of High Hopes, and this was an enjoyable first solo episode for the most part. Some of the dialogue felt too melodramatic or unconvincing in places and a couple of the scenes lacked much in the way of plot or character development - they felt like devices for a confrontation or argument. However on the positive side the plotlines were strong throughout this instalment as the dramatic aftermath of the siege continues, and a couple of the one-liners made me chuckle, which was a nice comedic touch for the episode. Overall I enjoyed this
HANNAH Thank you very much AC I feel very proud to have Joe part of High Hopes and I think his first episode has shown why.

1x08: 'You know what they say about women and the Irish accent' | Written by Hannah | Episode Eight
It was a quiet day at the garage and David Fields stood the wall sipping his third cup of coffee of the day, he watched the lunchtime trade pile into Faradays Restaurant, still reeling from the absence of their usual haunt The Crown and Horseshoe which had been closed since the horrific siege that had taken place just a week before. Patrick Hale joined his boss and they both discussed how the atmosphere had changed on the island since the siege. The two men whistled as Olivia Kane walked past on her way to Kane Creations, the salon that she owned. Olivia rolled her eyes and laughed “Anyone else and I would have made sure that having children would not be on the cards.” David jogged over to see how she was doing after the siege; Olivia admitted that she was having nightmares, but she felt lucky that she had Matthew to help her through it. Wanting to change the subject, Olivia asked how David’s love life was going “Well you know what they say about women and the Irish accent? Not happening on Canvey Island.” Olivia laughed and reassured David that it wouldn’t be long until one lucky lady would fall for his charms.
*
Josh Connor sat opposite his mother Heather in Faradays’ Restaurant staring at the menu, he had already decided what he wanted, but he was trying to put off having yet another conversation with his mother about how he was feeling. Since the siege, Heather had been trying to wrap her eldest child up in cotton wool, but added to Chloe Charles’ attempts to cheer him up, Josh was feeling suffocated. Josh had recently let his physical feelings for barmaid Chloe cloud his judgement and has since found himself in the awkward position of trying to let her down gently. However, Josh had resorted to his usual tactic of avoidance. Heather noticed Katherine Lavery arrive to pick up her takeaway; she called her over and asked about her daughter Siobhan. Katherine sighed “She’s really struggling” Katherine admitted “She hasn’t left the house since I brought her home from the hospital, I’m really worried about her.” Heather offered to visit Siobhan later in the week to help take her mind of things which Katherine really appreciated, Katherine said goodbye to Heather and Josh and left them to their meal.
*
It was lunchtime at Canvey Comp and Mia Faraday joined her friend Anthony Spencer at the picnic area. She asked politely how Anthony’s stepmother Siobhan was coping and he admitted that he was worried about her; it wasn’t often that Anthony saw Siobhan in this state, she was always so strong. Mia sympathised and confided in Anthony her upset in finding out about her aunt Lindsay Hastings’ infertility. As Mia and Anthony began to open up, their conversation was interrupted by Mia’s best friend Vicki Connor who spitefully laughed, “Please tell me that you’re not having a lunch date with this loser? You can do so much better Mia; you need a real man not some inexperienced little boy.” Mia blushed furiously while Anthony picked up his stuff and left the girls alone. Mia glared at Vicki “Sometimes Vicki, I really don’t understand why I’m still friends with you” Mia lashed out and walked away briskly.
*
Daniel Hastings quietly lay a pile of magazines down on his wife Lindsay’s hospital chair, she was fast asleep and he was being so careful not to wake her up. He joined his daughter Megan by the window where he hugged her tightly. “We have to talk about it sometime Dad” Megan broke the silence. “Your mother needs time to come to terms with my decision; she will see that I had no other choice.” Daniel looked over at Lindsay who was still sleeping peacefully. Megan sniffed “I meant about my…” She stopped, she didn’t know what to call it, she didn’t want to use the word baby. Daniel didn’t know what to say, he felt overwhelmed and he didn’t want to deal with it without Lindsay, but at the same time, he knew that Lindsay wasn’t ready to deal with the realities of Megan’s pregnancy.
*
Cole Donovan joined his wife Naomi in the garden as she enjoyed her glass of wine, they watched as the sky began to turn a darker shade. They talked about Ava’s recovery and Cole admitted that he was just eager to bring his little girl home. “I’ve missed out on so much of her life already; I just want to know that she’s safely tucked up in bed.” Naomi reached out for Cole’s hand and squeezed it affectionately. She admitted that she is more worried about their son Noah as he keeps disappearing for several days at a time. Cole and Naomi fell into silence again as they worried about their children, Naomi broke the silence “I haven’t had any messages since before the siege, do you think they’ve got bored?” Cole thought for a while before answering “I still think we’ve got to be careful, this person knows things about us and if the truth gets out, we’re finished here.” Naomi looked at Cole sadly “I love it here Cole, this is my home now” Cole moved closer to Naomi and kissed her on the forehead “I won’t let anything or anyone ruin this for us, this is our time now and I won’t waste a second of it.”
*
Olivia handed her flatmate Chloe a glass of red wine and they both snuggled up underneath a blanket, Chloe questioned why Olivia wasn’t with Matthew that night and Olivia admitted that she felt like she had been neglecting her friend. Chloe handed her box of chocolates over to Olivia and laughed when Olivia picked out three straightaway “I actually hate you Olivia Kane, the amount of chocolate you eat, you shouldn’t even fit through the front door” Olivia laughed cheekily and popped two in her mouth at the same time. Olivia asked Chloe how things were going with Josh; Chloe confided that Josh hadn’t returned her last two phone calls. Olivia advised Chloe to move on to the next guy, but Chloe eventually admitted how much she really liked Josh. “If you really think he is worth the effort Chlo, then go for it, but be careful. Have you ever known Josh Connor to be in a relationship?” Chloe sighed, she knew that Olivia had a point, but she didn’t want to admit it “Liv, I really really like him, and I genuinely think I could be the one to get him to open up” Olivia shrugged, realising it was already a losing battle “Like I said, just be careful.”
*
Steven Faraday hesitated as he stood outside Ava Donovan’s hospital room, finally after a few minutes of debating, he walked in. He sat down and asked how her recovery was coming along; she admitted that she was desperate to get home because she was so bored. Both Steven and Ava felt awkward as they separately flashed back to Ava’s confession during the seige. Finally Steven broke the silence “I wanted to apologise Ava, if I have ever given you the wrong impression, I am really sorry” Ava blushed, wishing she didn’t have to have this conversation. Steven continued “A relationship between a teacher and pupil is illegal for a reason Ava; you have to understand that nothing would ever happen. And I’m married and I love my wife very much” Ava laughed spitefully, breaking her own silence “You’re not thinking of your wife when you’re screwing Miss Fox.”
*
Daniel and Lindsay both sat in silence watching Eastenders on the hospital television, Daniel kept glancing over to Lindsay, but she was concentrating on the latest catfight between Kat and Roxy. Daniel tried to make small talk about the show, but Lindsay wasn’t being receptive, finally she snapped and told him he should head home and keep Megan company. Before Daniel left Lindsay stopped him “We have to start making plans for the baby” Lindsay said sternly. “I don’t think now is the time, let’s just concentrate on your recovery first”. Daniel tried to hold Lindsay’s hand, but she pulled it away. “Maybe you should have thought about that before you stole my last chance to have another child of my own” Lindsay lashed out “We have our daughter and our grandchild to think about now Daniel, once Megan’s settled then we can sort out the disaster that is our marriage. Please can you go now, I need some rest” Lindsay turned and lay down facing away from Daniel; she quickly wiped away a tear and tried to close her eyes to get some sleep.

APPLECOBBLERHH is in a strong place following the siege and the aftermath has been well explored. The quality of writing is consistently high and all the scenes added something different to the episode, which can be difficult to pull off JAMIE Another highly decent episode, as High Hopes continues to thrive in its success. It's nice to see the continuing aftermath of the siege continuing, and your writing as always is perfect
HANNAH Thank you very much, AC and Jamie Your comments mean a lot to me and Jaay, and it really makes all our thought and hard work worthwhile

1x09: 'It's Tuesday, PE day, he always gets sick around Tuesday' | Written by Joe | Episode Nine
The Hastings family are standing as one in the corridor of the hospital, awaiting Lindsay as she is finally being allowed home after her hysterectomy. Leading the family is Lindsay’s father Duncan Faraday. As Duncan paces the floor, Megan is sitting on a chair chewing her nails. Meanwhile, Lindsay’s husband Daniel is also showing his nerves by checking his phone and watch every two minutes. Just then, Lindsay emerges from the doctor’s consultancy room and smiles at her family. Walking towards them, Duncan embraces his daughter while she smiles at Daniel. As they make their way to the exit, Lindsay walks beside her daughter Megan. “Sweetie, I’m back now as everything will be fine” smiles Lindsay as Megan continues to chew her nails.
*
Over at Canvey Comp, Mia Faraday is just finishing a phone call with her grandfather who has informed her that her aunt Lindsay has been released from hospital. “That’s great granddad, okay…talk later…bye” smiles Mia as she hangs her phone and tries to get a few books from her locker. However, in the bustle trying to hang up her phone and grab her books, she drops some books on the floor. Luckily Anthony Spencer is walking past and makes his way over to help. “Let me get them” states Anthony as he dashes to the ground to pick them up. Mia smiles and thanks Anthony, “My hero” jokes Mia. Anthony then begins to get nervous and hands Mia the books. Stuttering and moving back and forth, Anthony tries to ask Mia something. Suddenly Vicki Connor arrives. “What’s wrong face ache?” she snaps at Anthony. Mia tells Vicki to leave off before thanking Anthony and leaving with Vicki.
*
Meanwhile at the Spencer household, Siobhan is sitting in the kitchen drinking a cup of tea when the doorbell rings. It rings once more and Siobhan begins to flinch. *
At the hospital, Ava Donavan is lying in bed, bored. Flicking through magazines and listening to her IPod, she fails to notice when her mother Naomi and father Cole arrive to visit her. As they chat about her treatment and when she can come home, Ava tells them that the doctor will be around later so she’s going to ask then when she can go home. “Where’s Noah? He hasn’t been in to see me yet” asks Ava. Naomi then tells Ava that Noah hasn’t been seen in the past week, basically since the siege. “I got a text off him to say he was fine and needed some time away but nothing since” says a worried Naomi. “He’s probably shacked up with some blonde” announces Cole. “Or he just doesn’t want to be around you” says Ava bringing up the fact that Noah doesn’t get on with father Cole.
*
Back at Faradays restaurant, Danieland Lindsay are enjoying a drink with Duncanbehind the bar chatting to them. As Megan makes her way through the restaurant, Lindsay leaves the two men chatting and makes her way over to her daughter. Megan still trying to make her way to the door is pulled back by her mother. “Are ya not happy your old Mum is home?” asks Lindsay jokingly. Megan reveals she’s just heading to the hospital to see Ava. Lindsay then tells Megan to be safe and careful and start to try to avoid the hospital now as she doesn’t want to pick anything up, not in her condition. Megan faintly smiles before Lindsay starts talking about baby names, new prams and decorating the spare room as nursery. As Lindsay continues to mutter, Megan runs out of the pub, leaving Lindsay standing there open mouthed

Making their way home from school, Mia and Anthony are chatting away when he finally plucks up the courage to ask her out. “So I was wondering…well if you’re free…um I don’t know….maybe you’d like to….go to the cinema or something…would you like to go out with me sometime?” asks a nervous Anthony. Mia then smiles at him and says she would love too.
*
Over at the Spencers, Siobhan hears the door go again. As she gets up from the ground when she had been sitting since the last time the doorbell ring, she spies again to see who it is. Kinda making out the figure she calls to ask who it is. “It’s Josh…Josh Connor” shouts Josh. Siobhan then slowly and struggling, walks over to the door. Faltering again she gets angry with herself. Finally she opens the door and quickly beckons Josh inside. Once inside, she offers him tea and pretends like everything is fine. “I thought we might go for a walk” asks Josh, “Oh god no…I mean I’ve so much to do…Emily will be home soon for her tea” says a nervous Siobhan. Josh then explains that he was talking to her mother Katherine a few days previous. “She wanted me to call over…since we were both in the siege together” informs Josh. No sooner have the words been spoken, Siobhan begins to panic and her breathing gets heavy. ROSSI felt so bad for Siobhan... such a strong woman, so deeply affected by a tragic twist of events. I really hope that she can overcome her variety of emotions in the aftermath of the siege, the poor woman. It's also really nice to see Josh visiting her. It gives the show a bigger community feel, which I like I really hope Megan keeps her baby; she can give it to Lindsey to bring up! IMO, it would be pretty selfish of her if she did get rid of the baby at any point of the pregnancy. Okay yes, it's her body, her decision - but I really hope she thinks about her poor mum in all of this. Lindsey's been through so much, she really deserves a bit of happiness, and that's what I think the baby would bring her! HANNAH Thank you very much Ross It's nice to see that you're enjoying High Hopes. Stay tuned, Josh will play more of a part in Siobhan's recovery. As for Megan, I think this storyline will generate many different opinions and hopefully the writing will make it work no matter the outcome
WOODY High Hopes is spectacular! I'd like more of Duncan, it's very realistic for him to feel lonely following his wife's death... especially seeing as now he's coming to a certain age where a lot of people feel depressed. Hopefully we soon see more of Kayla and Patrick, even if it's the odd scene; since they found out they were allowed to foster, we've barely seen them. I don't know much about them at the moment so some development there would be utterly fantastic. I think Siobhan and Katherine are my favourites so far, feel real pity for Siobhan. Not too sure on The Connors yet as the only one who interests me is Josh so more development for them would be fantastic... as I think especially Heather could be a fantastic character. I'd actually say the aftermath of the siege was a lot better then the actual siege... we've certainly seen a lot of improvement since the start HANNAH Thank you Woody, it's so lovely to have a new reader to HH. I will take on board your thoughts re: Duncan and Kayla/Patrick, so be prepared to see more of them. There is a lovely romance coming up between Duncan and Katherine, so you will see a different side to both characters

1x10: 'One step ahead of you as always' | Written by Hannah | Episode Ten
In CID office of Canvey Police Station, Detective Sergeant Michael Connor sat on the edge of his desk sipping his third cup of coffee of the afternoon, he was staring at the case board depicting every detail of the pub siege which devastated the lives of the Hastings family as well as several other members of the community, Michael glared at the blurred CCTV images of the three faceless men and felt physically sick at the thought of his own son Josh being trapped in that volatile situation. He had to do a double take when he noticed his wife Heather walk through into the office, he questioned why she was at the station, she lovingly teased him “You know I have always liked a man in uniform” She lightly kissed her husband on the lips “I’m representing a drug dealer that you have in custody, your boss wants a quick word with me, sorry to disappoint you if you thought I was only here to visit you” She winked and then noticed the case board that Michael was looking at. “You have to get them Michael, we could have lost our boy” Michael pulled Heather close to him as she began to get emotional “I will get them babe” He promised.

Naomi Donovan carried her daughter Ava’s bag up to her bedroom while her husband Cole helped Ava to limp up the stairs. The couple’s attempts to make her comfortable were interrupted when Ava’s best friend Megan Hastings appeared on the stairs, she admitted that the front door had been left open which puzzled Naomi. Cole and Naomi left the girls to talk; Megan pulled out a handful of DVDs from her bag and snuggled up next to Ava. Ava tried to avoid Megan’s questions about her brother Noah, but eventually Ava realised that she had to admit the truth. “He’s gone Megan; no one’s seen him since the morning after the siege” Megan felt sick as she tried to comprehend Ava’s words “But what about me?” She questioned. Ava watched her friend sympathetically as Megan rested her head on Ava’s shoulder, tears falling from her eyes.
*
In the Spencer household, Siobhan Spencer lay in bed under her covers, she wasn’t sleeping, but she wasn’t ready to escape the confines of her bedroom. She heard her stepson Anthony return home from school, but she still didn’t move. She felt safe here, and over the last few weeks, that feeling was a rare occurrence.
*
At the Garage, David Fields tried to make small talk with his colleague Patrick Hale, but Patrick was disinterested in building a friendship with his boss. After twenty minutes of silence, Patrick was relieved to see his partner Kayla Macey walking towards him with an afternoon treat “You’re definitely a keeper” Patrick teased as Kayla pecked him on the lips “Don’t get too used to this, we should be getting our first foster child soon and we won’t have time for us anymore” Patrick rolled his eyes “You’re making this sound more and more attractive by the second” Kayla laughed, not realising that Patrick wasn’t completely joking. Kayla smiled politely at David and then left again. Patrick noticed David staring at him and sighed “What?” Patrick frowned. David shrugged “You’re not as in to this fostering thing as Kayla thinks you are, are you?” Patrick looked over at Kayla walking down the road away from the garage. “It’s what Kayla wants” Patrick muttered.
*
Josh Connor sat in his bedroom staring at his laptop; he thought back to his encounter with Siobhan the previous day and remembered how worried her mother Katherine Lavery had been. He read intently the information about post-traumatic stress disorder and saw a pattern between Siobhan’s behaviour and the condition. He sat thinking for a little longer and then jumped up abruptly. He slammed down the lid of the laptop and grabbed his jacket from the chair. He nearly crushed Chloe Charles as he rushed out the front door; she dropped her box of chocolate muffins on the floor. Josh helped her to pick them up and questioned what she was doing there. “You said you would call me back and you didn’t so I thought I’d come over instead” Chloe leant in to kiss Josh, but he stepped away. “I’m a little busy Chloe” Josh turned around to carry on walking, but Chloe tugged at his arm expectantly “I need to go and see Siobhan, look I’ll give you a call later” Before Chloe could say anything else, Josh disappeared down the road.
*
Olivia Kane handed her boyfriend Matthew Fitzgerald a bottle of wine as he met her outside her sister’s house for Ava’s welcome home dinner “I thought you could give this to Naomi and Cole, you know, make a good first impression” Matthew laughed and kissed Olivia, from behind his back, he pulled out another bottle of wine “One step ahead of you as always” He teased. Before the couple had the chance to ring the doorbell, Naomi answered the door “I thought I could hear…” But she stopped as she came face to face with Matthew. Naomi struggled to breathe as she followed Matthew and Olivia through the house, she invited the couple to take a seat and she escaped upstairs. Ava limped out her bedroom and asked her mother if she was ok, Naomi admitted that she wasn’t. Matthew was back in her life and he was dating her sister. “Why is he here Mum?” Ava questioned. Naomi paced around the hallway feeling her temperature rise “Your father can’t find out Ava, he’d be devastated” Ava tried to calm her mother down, but Naomi was shaking uncontrollably. “Maybe he would be ok with it, he was the one that told you to stop visiting him” Naomi shook her head, she was crying now “I promised him that I would wait for him and I was too selfish to keep that promise” Ava held onto Naomi’s shoulders “You have spent your whole life waiting for Dad, you were entitled to have a life, if I can understand that then Dad can too” Naomi wiped away her tears “I need some time, I need to work out how to tell him. And Olivia, we’ve only just found each other again” Ava stroked her mother’s hair “It’s going to be ok Mum” She promised.
BREAK Megan walked glumly towards her grandfather’s house, where the family had been staying since the siege. She didn’t even noticed when her uncle Steven Faraday called her from across the road. He teased her about being away with the fairies, Megan tried to laugh, but she couldn’t quite manage to be convincing. When Megan mentioned that she had spent the afternoon with Ava, Steven tried to find out whether Ava had mentioned anything about his affair with his colleague Michelle Fox, but from what Steven could work out, his secret was still safe.
*
Anthony and his date Mia Faraday walked hand in hand down the road as Anthony walked Mia home. They had enjoyed a date at the local cinema, but now Anthony was panicking about the dreaded kiss at the end of the date. His mind was racing as the fear began to paralyse him, he could barely hear Mia’s chatter about the GCSE mock exams they were due to take in the next few weeks. As they reached Mia’s doorstep, Mia looked at him expectantly “I had a really nice time” She smiled, she leant in nervously to kiss him, but at the last minute Anthony turned his head away and stepped backwards awkwardly. He wished Mia a hurried goodbye and left her standing on the doorstep feeling embarrassed and disappointed.

After an awkward dinner, Naomi escaped to the kitchen to finish the washing up. She shivered as she felt a presence behind her; she turned around to find Matthew staring at her. “Did you know that Olivia was my sister?” Naomi demanded. Matthew laughed “Of course I didn’t. I’m not going to tell her about our history if that’s what you’re worried about” Naomi glared at Matthew’s calm exterior “You followed me all the way here, do you realise how desperate that makes you?” Matthew smiled “It’s good to know I still have this effect on you Naomi” Naomi rolled her eyes “Don’t flatter yourself Matthew” Matthew moved in close to Naomi, she still wore the same scent. He breathed in her scent and then abruptly moved back “I actually like your sister Naomi, I’m not going anywhere” He warned.
*
Siobhan rushed Josh through the door and quickly locked it; he watched her curiously as she then rushed to every window and door to make sure they were all locked securely. He asked how she had been, Siobhan shrugged in response. As Josh tried to make small talk, Siobhan was shaking and constantly looking around the room; eventually he stopped talking and admitted that he was worried about her. Siobhan tried to convince him that she was fine, but he could see right through her assurances. “Siobhan, what we went through was terrifying. It’s understandable to feel like you’re struggling. I’m struggling too. Every single night I get nightmares and I can still hear those gunshots and obviously I feel sorry for Lindsay and Ava, but I am so thankful that it wasn’t me” Siobhan was struggling to breathe as memories of the siege came flooding back fast. She stood up and tried to calm herself down, but all she could hear were screams and the sound of glass breaking. Josh reached out towards her but Siobhan pushed him violently away “Don’t touch me!” She screamed. “Siobhan, it’s ok, you’re safe with me” Siobhan stared at Josh through her tears and slowly her breathing began to calm down, he held onto her tightly as she began to sob in his arms. He kissed her forehead tenderly, whispering the words “You’re safe.”
*
Daniel Hastings stood outside daughter Megan’s room; he could hear the sound of a muffled sob. He knocked on the door and walked through, Megan quickly tried to wipe her face, but he knew she had been crying. “Your Mum’s worried about you, and the baby” Daniel sat down on the end of Megan’s bed. Megan frowned and shook her head “You mean she’s worried about the baby, that’s all she cares about” “Don’t be silly Megan” Daniel warned, Megan sighed in frustration. “You’re just as bad as she is, baby this and baby that, what about me? What about what I want?” Megan cried, she pushed Daniel away as he reached out for her “No one has asked what I want, Mum has gone ahead and made all these plans for when the baby comes, she’s even ordered a cot from the internet” Megan was getting carried away with her ranting and Daniel had to stop her, he was shocked by his daughter’s distress and had to soothe her tears. “What do you want Megan?” He asked softly. Megan cried even harder “I want an abortion Dad, I don’t want this baby.”

Naomi shivered as she crept down the stairs to get a glass of water; she stopped as she heard a noise coming from the living room. Taking a deep breath, Naomi slowly opened the living room door and stared into the darkness. Still moving slowly she turned on the light and gasped by what she saw. Every inch of the walls were covered in photocopied newspaper articles documenting Cole’s arrest for murder and the outcome of his trial. In distress, Naomi desperately tore them down, but soon collapsed on the floor in tears, attempting to rip up the papers that surrounded her.

ROSSHannah, I am really enjoying High Hopes at the moment The storytelling, IMO, is absolutely flawless... from Michael's quest, to the Matthew/Naomi story; from Noah's disappearance, to Megan's baby dilemma - there are so many multi-dimensional, complex stories here which are extremely character-led, beautifully crafted melodrama I really don't want Megan to get rid of the baby... as it would make poor Lindsay so happy; however I can see where Megan is coming from... she's the one that has to give birth to the baby, she's the one that has to go through nine months of pregnancy; nobody else, just her. It is her choice ultimately; I just hope she thinks through all of her possible directions before making a final choice I also really want Noah to return... because, if he did, I think Megan might think of the pregnancy and the baby in a different way. You are handling this story sensitively and with care, so well done for that
What is Matthew's problem?! He is so creepy, it's unbelievable! As much as he really creeps me out, I really like him and Olivia as a couple... they really bounce off each other. I hope Matthew is genuine about their relationship, and he's not just stringing her along to get closer to Naomi again! Another fantastic story in the ongoing Matthew/Naomi/Olivia/Cole drama - so well done for that too! I think that Anthony and Mia are unbelievably cute as a couple, and I hope they're in it for the long haul! I actually shouted at my computer screen "Anthony, just kiss her!"
Some fantastic developments elsewhere with Kayla/Patrick, Michael/Heather and Josh/Chloe... however the stand out plot for me in High Hopes so far is definitely Siobhan's PTSD... I feel so sorry for her; she must be so petrified. But it is nice to know that she has somebody like Josh to be there for her and to help her As much as I love Josh and Chloe as a couple... I'm actually vying for a Josh/Siobhan romance, TBH!
Fantastic work here, Hannah! Well done! HANNAHThank you very much Ross for the AMAZING feedback there. Matthew is a real mystery, he has this complex history and feelings for Naomi, but is finding himself more and more intrigued by Olivia, they're definitely a couple to watch. There are some interesting developments coming up for Anthony, and Mia will get caught in the crossfire. Patrick and Kayla's storyline will be quite low key during Season 1 until it's ready to blow up a little, but it will be there bubbling away in the background. And I'll tell you a secret, I'm totally in love with Jiobhan ROSS Long live Jiobhan! Sorry Rosh
UNKNOWN A very enjoyable episode, I really enjoyed it Hannah. I love the slow pace to the stories, it makes them all the more rich. Your approach to the aftermath to the siege has been exceptional. I mean the consequences of it so far have been far reaching and very realistic. #anthonyandmiaaresocute Siobhan's story is highly compelling as is the impending dramas and disasters that the Hastings are encountering
WOODY Another episode of High Hopes which had me well and truly hooked. Patrick and Kayla really interests me despite not having a big storyline so you must be doing something right! I think the Matthew plot has overtaken Siobhan's post traumatic stress disorder as my favourite storyline. Excellent stuff Hannah HANNAH Thank you very much Woody I'm glad you're enjoying Payla. If I'm honest, they are the two characters which I have never been 100% on, but while they're be in the background mostly during the last half of Season One, I have planned to bring them more into the forefront in Season Two when they get their first foster child

1x11: 'I would really appreciate a good old-fashioned catfight, preferably with some mud' | Written by Hannah | Episode Eleven
It was the afternoon after the night before and Daniel Hastings was trying to decide how to broach the subject of his daughter Megan’s desire for an abortion to his fragile wife Lindsay. He stood outside the back entrance to the Crown and Horseshoe pub smoking his second cigarette in a row. The family were moving back into the pub that day now that the police and crime scene investigators had finished inside in wake of the horrifying siege which left Lindsay infertile. Daniel jumped as Megan’s voice disturbed his train of thought “I haven’t talked to your Mum yet love” Daniel answered Megan’s question before she could even ask it. Megan looked troubled “She’s really going to hate me” Daniel sighed and pulled his daughter into a hug “A mother could never hate their child, but Megan; this isn’t going to be easy.”
*
At Canvey Comp, Vicki Connor was repeatedly kicking the back of Anthony Spencer’s chair, deliberately ignoring their teacher Naomi Donovan’s musings about ‘Lord of the Flies.’ Eventually, the annoyance became too much for Anthony and he turned around and rudely demanded that Vicki stop. Vicki just laughed in response and asked how Anthony’s date with Mia Faraday ended, but before he had the chance to answer, Vicki began a tirade of abuse “I’ve had a lot of dates and from what Mia said, you were a lousy first date. Didn’t even try for a kiss, some man you are” Vicki taunted “I did warn Mia that she needs a real man with experience, not the only virgin left in the year” Anthony blushed a furious shade of red, while Naomi warned Vicki to concentrate on her coursework. Vicki just shrugged and carried on smiling bitchily at Anthony, he turned around, desperately trying to ignore the whispers of his classmates.
*
Josh Connor sat sipping his cup of tea as Katherine Lavery read the sheets he had printed out from the internet. He had popped over to the Spencer house to see Siobhan, but she had refused to leave her bedroom in wake of her panic attack the previous night. Katherine nodded as she finished reading the notes “It really does sound like Siobhan is suffering from PTSD, I don’t know how to help her Josh, how do I get her to see a doctor when she won’t even leave her bedroom.” Before Josh could answer, Siobhan’s 12 year old daughter Emily came in wanting to know what PTSD was. Katherine tried to explain the condition in child friendly terms, but she faltered when she couldn’t answer whether Siobhan was going to be ok. “When you’re all finished discussing my personal life, I would really appreciate it if you all went back to your own lives” Siobhan lashed out furiously as she walked into the living room “How I cope with what happened is my business” Katherine tried to calm her daughter down, but Siobhan was fuming “Get out!” Siobhan screamed and ushered Katherine and Josh out of the house. Once the front door was shut, Siobhan double locked it and collapsed to the ground in tears. Siobhan looked up and saw Emily standing by the kitchen door with a terrified expression on her face.

As evening set in on Canvey Island, Cole Donovan brought his wife a large glass of wine as she dozed on the sofa. She hadn’t slept the previous night after the latest stunt pulled by their mystery caller and she had a highly stressful day at school as she struggled to focus on teaching. “We can’t let this guy win Naomi, if he sees us not coping then he’ll win” Cole tried to comfort Naomi, but she wasn’t feeling any more relaxed “Maybe we should tell people the truth Cole, then we won’t have this secret held over us” Cole shook his head “People wouldn’t understand and we couldn’t stay. Most people don’t want to live next door to a murderer” Naomi began to cry “We don’t deserve to live in fear” Cole held Naomi as she cried “I find out who’s doing this to us, I promise you babe.”
*
Giggling could be heard in corner of Faradays restaurant as Olivia Kane and Chloe Charles finished their second bottle of wine. Local garage owner David Fields was intrigued by the girl’s laughter and joined them. The girls harmlessly teased David about his lack of luck with the ladies over recent weeks, but David teased them back by admitting that he had his eye on someone. Olivia followed David’s gaze over to the bar and noticed Michelle Fox sitting alone with a cocktail “Oh please, you could do so much better” Chloe sniggered and pointed out that Olivia and Michelle had a long standing rivalry which had begun when Olivia arrived on Canvey Island. David laughed “Well, if tension gets a little too much tonight, I would really appreciate a good old fashioned catfight, preferably with some mud” Olivia playfully slapped David on the arm “Cheeky” She laughed.
*
Ava Donovan noticed Steven Faraday walking his chocolate brown Labrador from the bedroom window. She quickly limped down the stairs and out the front door to catch up with him. “I’ve been meaning to stop by to see how you are” Steven said sheepishly. Ava shrugged “It’s ok” She muttered. Steven asked how Ava was coping with her recovery, she admitted that it was frustrating being so limited. An awkward silence followed and eventually Steven brought up the elephant in the room. “I need to know what you’re going to do Ava. My marriage is on the line” Ava turned away “You have no idea what this is doing to me, you deserve better than Sophia. You obviously don’t love her, otherwise you wouldn’t have ended up with Miss Fox” Steven frowned “You’re too young to understand anything about love” He lashed out, instantly regretting it when he saw the look of hurt on Ava’s face. “Stop patronising me, you think because I’m seventeen I don’t know anything. I know how I feel about you and as much as you pretend, you know that there is something between us” Without warning, Ava moved in and kissed Steven on the lips, in a split moment Steven began to kiss her back, as he began to come to his senses, an angry voice could be heard down the street. “Get your hands off my daughter!” Cole bellowed as he dropped the bags he was carrying out to the bins.
*
Siobhan stared at Josh’s phone number and after several minutes decided to press call. She waited shakily for him to answer. “Josh” She whispered “I think I need help” She cried down the phone “I don’t want to be like this, I don’t want to keep hurting my family” Siobhan listened to Josh’s words of support and promises and thanked him as he promised to take to see a doctor.
*
Megan heard noises coming from the spare bedroom and began to shake as she was haunted by memories from the siege; it was only when she heard her mum Lindsay begin to sing that Megan calmed down. She walked slowly into the room and her eyes widened in shock as she watched Lindsay painting sample colours over the wall “What are you doing?” Megan asked in horror. “I’m trying to decide on a colour for the nursery, I know we don’t even know if you’re having a boy or a girl yet, but I thought I would get the ball rolling” Megan stepped back in distress “Stop!” She ordered. In a temper, Megan knocked the paint pot out of Lindsay’s hand and began to rip up the magazines and pictures of baby furniture. Lindsay pleaded with her daughter to calm down and soon Daniel ran into the room wanting to know what the noise was. Megan stopped and stared at her father “Please you have to tell her Dad” Megan begged. “Tell me what” Lindsay’s voice cracked with emotion. “I don’t want this baby Mum” Megan blurted out “I’m having an abortion!”

APPLECOBBLERAnother strong instalment with very good scenes involving Jiobhan (easily HH's strongest pairing in my view) and a superb cliffhanger. I can really sympathise with Megan, and I wonder whether she will actually get rid of the baby? Whatever the outcome, it will be fascinating to see how the plot plays out. The quality of writing remains excellent and the pace of the project is not too frantic while ensuring high drama. Although a little bit of the dialogue can feel over the top, in the main it was fine. Another enjoyable episode here ROSSFantastic episode Loving Jiobhan still! I am glad that Siobhan has decided to get help... she's a lovely character Oooh! Steven just can't get himself out of trouble, can he?! First Michelle, now Ava! He's definitely gonna be in trouble with Cole! I felt really sorry for both Megan and Lindsay... if I'm honest, I feel that the Megan/Lindsay baby dildemma is amazing, and definitely the strongest story It's powerful, emotional and I have already really connected with all of the characters involved I loved the Olivia/Chloe/David/Michelle scene! Ooh, that David is such a flirt... Fab episode Hannah, keep this amazingness coming, please! UNKNOWN From the excellent opening scene to the exception 3 cliffhangers, I LOVED this episode. This episode in my opinion is my new favorite since the siege, which I loved. This was a well crafted episode Hannah and I think you did a great job. The Hastings, I mean they really are in turmoil and I like them all, Daniel, Lindsey and Megan. This is going to be such a testing time for them and I mean they are already under pressure as it is. I think they'll survive though. Oi bitch Vicki, leave off Anthony! #longliveanthonyandmia Siobhan finally admitting she needs help was brilliant and I loved how it was the sight of her daughter that made her do it. Very realistic and a nice twist on this long running story. Finally, gasp, shock, horror, Steven kissed Ava! This story is going to be epic, you've got Steven, Sophia and Michelle, then add David, then add the Donavon family, and all their secrets and then add Olivia and Matthew! It's huge! I can't wait to see it blow! Well done!
HANNAH Thank you AppleCobbler for your lovely words Ross - thank you so much, David is a real flirt, although it hasn't been working out very well... yet

1x12: 'Don't you usually ride a boat over to Marks & Spencer's for your beans?' | Written by Hannah | Episode Twelve
It was late morning on Canvey Island and over at the Last Minute Supermarket, manager Katherine Lavery was pouring over the latest edition of the local newspaper, she frowned as she read an interview with Detective Sergeant Michael Connor, who had admitted that there were no new leads in the search for the three gunmen who had held residents of Canvey Island hostage in the Crown and Horseshoe pub. The owner Duncan Faraday walked through the door and criticised Katherine for looking unprofessional, Katherine rolled her eyes and questioned Duncan’s presence “Don’t you usually ride a boat over to Marks and Spencer’s for your beans?” Duncan looked offended “I’m not as stuck up as you think Katherine. I actually popped in to ask you how Siobhan was doing” Katherine blushed, feeling embarrassed. She apologised and admitted that Siobhan has been struggling and it has caused her to lash out at everyone around her. Duncan smiled at Katherine sympathetically and reached out and touched her shoulder “If you need someone to talk to, or yell at, you can always give me a call” Duncan said kindly, Katherine sniffed, feeling touched by Duncan’s kindness. “Thank you” She whispered “Although you may regret saying that.” She smiled weakly.
*
Steven Faraday froze in the corridor of Canvey High School, he watched as Ava Donovan walked out of the head’s office. She looked at him with tears in her eyes, she started to walk over to him “Steven, I’m so sorry” She apologised, but before she could reach him she heard her name barked from behind her. Before she knew it, her father Cole had overtaken her and punched Steven in the face, Ava screamed and dove to Steven’s side. The head teacher Charlotte Pope stormed out of her office as she heard the commotion “Mr Donovan that is enough” She ordered “Rest assured that your complaint will be investigated. I advise you to leave school property before I call the police and have you thrown back in prison for assault” She shot Steven an angry look as he held his hand over his mouth to stem the bleeding. “Don’t worry, I’ll be talking to the police myself, I’m sure they’ll have something to say about a pervert taking advantage of my daughter” Cole stormed off with Ava in pursuit. Charlotte stared at Steven in a mixture of confusion and disgust “I think we need a word Mr Faraday.”
*
Mechanic David Fields pulled up in his truck to the car park of Canvey High School, drama teacher Michelle Fox stared at him in appreciation. He walked over to her and asked her what the problem was with her car. She explained that smoke had poured out of the bonnet and now the engine would not start. As David took a look at Michelle’s car, they began to chat about Michelle’s job. “I definitely would have stayed in school more often if we had teachers that looked like you” David shamelessly flirted. Michelle laughed at his forwardness “You’re really not shy” She teased. David smiled back “My mother taught me to always take a risk when I see something that I like, otherwise I’ll just live a life of regrets” David stopped what he was doing and looked at Michelle, she looked a little nervous which was unlike her “And do you see something that you like?” She bit her bottom lip as she waited for David’s response “What’s not to like?” Michelle walked around the car so that she was closer to David “I’m trouble, you should probably stay away from me” David brushed Michelle’s hair from her face “I never really did know what was good for me” He leant in and kissed Michelle softly on the lips. She responded for a moment and then pulled back “I’m sorry David, I’m already involved with someone” Michelle looked torn, she sighed and walked back into the school, leaving David to finish working on her car.
*
Mia Faraday and Anthony Spencer were lying on Anthony’s bed, the young couple had skipped their afternoon lessons as Anthony was determined to prove Vicki Connor wrong and lose his virginity. Both Anthony and Mia nervously kissed, but Anthony couldn’t shake the feeling that their actions felt wrong, he carried on. Mia slowly undressed and Anthony did the same, they began to kiss again and they got under the covers.
*
Megan Hastings hung up the phone, breathing a sigh of relief that her appointment with the abortion clinic was finally booked. Her mother Lindsay entered the living room after listening in to Megan’s phone call. “Please don’t do this Megan” She pleaded, Lindsay sat down next to Megan and grabbed hold of her hands. “Mum” Megan cried “I don’t want to have this baby, I’ve thought about this for so long, I’m not ready to be a mum” Lindsay stroked Megan’s face “You don’t have to be a mum Megan” Megan stared at Lindsay in confusion “I could bring up the baby” Lindsay continued. Megan stood up in shock “I can’t deal with this right now” Megan cried and escaped the room while Lindsay broke down in tears.
*
Outside the doctor’s surgery, Siobhan Spencer stood staring at the old building, her hands were shaking and she was beginning to doubt her decision to seek help. Josh Connor stood next to her and took hold of her hand “You can do this Siobhan” He said comforting her. “Think about Emily and Anthony, they need you to get better” Siobhan cried softly “What if I’m beyond help?” Josh held onto Siobhan’s hand “Nobody is beyond help, let’s do this together” Siobhan nodded and held onto Josh’s hand tightly. They walked into the doctor’s surgery together hand in hand.
BREAK “You can’t believe a word of this Charlotte” Steven protested as Charlotte talked through Cole’s version of events. He had accused Steven of grooming Ava and taking advantage of her vulnerable state after the siege. Steven admitted that he had tutored Ava privately, but nothing had ever happened. Steven paced around the room in distress “I think she developed a crush on me, but honestly Charlotte I never realised until last night” Steven lied, deliberately not mentioning Ava’s declaration of love during the siege. “The girl is traumatised from the siege, she is confused and tried to kiss me, but there was never any encouragement from me” Charlotte stared at Steven, studying his body language “Whatever the truth Steven, I have a duty to investigate this. I’m sorry Steven, but I do have to suspend you” Steven shook his head, he couldn’t believe what was happening “Please Charlotte, at least tell me that you believe me” Charlotte remained silent “I think there is more to the story Steven and I will find out the truth” She promised.
*
Anthony paced around his bedroom in distress while Mia frantically threw on her clothes. She tried to calm Anthony, but he physically pushed her away “Anthony, people always have trouble the first time” Mia tried to make him feel better “We can try again” Anthony stared at Mia and pushed her jacket at her “Get out!” He ordered. He pushed Mia down the stairs and through the front door “Just leave me alone!”
*
Megan walked alone aimlessly down the beach, she watched as a young mother played with her child. She cringed as she imagined herself doing the same, in the distance she could see Heather Connor walking with her dog Charlie. Megan and Heather exchanged pleasantries, but Heather could see that there was something bothering Megan. After much persuasion, Megan finally opened up about her pregnancy and her desire for an abortion. Heather sat down on the beach with Megan and encouraged her to talk about why she wants to have an abortion. “My mum looks at me like I haven’t thought about this, like I haven’t spent every night not being able to sleep because I’m thinking about this. It isn’t fair to bring this baby into the world for the wrong reasons” Megan explained “My mum wants to bring the baby up herself, but she only wants this because she can’t have any children herself. That’s not a good enough reason for carrying on with this pregnancy; I will not have this baby to fill a gap for my mum. Do you think I’m being selfish?” Heather shook her head “I believe that a woman has the right to choose, Megan, only you can decide what is the best, I can tell you what to do and neither can your mum” Heather said sympathetically. Megan stood up shivering “I should get home” She thanked Heather for talking to her and walked back to the pub, ready to talk to Lindsay.
*
Siobhan felt exhausted as she finally walked through her front door, she invited Josh in and opened up about her talk with the doctor. She explained that she felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders and she had arranged an appointment with a counsellor. “Thank you” Siobhan smiled, genuinely for the first time in which felt like months. “You look beautiful when you smile” Josh complimented Siobhan. She looked away in embarrassment, she started to make a cup of tea but felt Josh stop her, she looked at him and really noticed him. She noticed how his brown eyes had specks of black in them and how his lips curved when he said her name. Josh’s hands reached her face and they both leant in at the same time and kissed.
*
At the Connors, Vicki and Mia sat in her bedroom with music playing. Mia explained how Anthony wanted to take their relationship further, but again she was left disappointed. Vicki pressed Mia for more details, but Mia felt reluctant to talk about it. Without Mia realising, Vicki was looking down at her phone, she pressed the voice recorder and began to push Mia into talking more. “It’s embarrassing to talk about” Mia protested. “Is he a bad kisser?” Vicki asked. Mia hesitated “I don’t think he really knows what he is doing, but that wasn’t the problem” Mia stopped “He couldn’t, you know…” Vicki feigned ignorance “I don’t understand Mia, Anthony couldn’t what?” Mia sighed, blushing as she spoke “You know, rise to the occasion” Vicki laughed cruelly “It doesn’t surprise me Mia, I did warn you” As their conversation gradually began to change direction, Vicki subtly turned off the recorder and placed her phone on her bedside table.
*
Megan hesitated as she stood outside her living room; she took a deep breath and walked in. She looked at her parents who were lying on the sofa together cuddled up; it had been a long time since she had seen them looking so close. She sat down on the chair opposite and finally spoke “I’ve made my decision mum, I can’t let you raise my baby. It’s not fair on me to watch you every day playing mum to my child and it’s not fair on the baby, being used to fill a gap that the siege left” Daniel looked at Lindsay in horror “You offered to raise the baby?” Lindsay ignored her husband and pleaded with Megan to change her mind. Daniel was fuming “Don’t you think I had a right to be consulted in this? Megan is right; you’re using this pregnancy as a way of dealing with what happened to you and its not fair Lindsay. Maybe you should stop thinking about what you can’t have and start thinking about the child you already have. Megan is our child and she needs our support” Lindsay stood up in distress “I’m trying to stop her from making a decision she will regret” Daniel shook his head “No, you’re trying to get her to make the decision you want and I won’t allow it Lindsay!” Daniel led Megan away, leaving Lindsay alone in the living room.

APPLECOBBLERAnother well written instalment of High Hopes, and the reference to the siege in the first scene was realistic - the events in the pub certainly are having a long-term effect. The Daniel/Lindsay/Megan developments were intriguing, with the final scene the strongest of the instalment CALLERA throughly enjoyable episode that was well written! I must say I do like your episode titles! I enjoyed the interaction between Michelle and the very forward David, and it was also interesting to see how Megan herself and her family coped with her baby dilemma. It seems the siege is also still playing a part in the many stories that occur in this series too! Well done! ROSSYES! Jiobhan have FINALLY got it on! Loving how Josh & Siobhan's romance is developing over time as they are ready, and they're not rushing into anything They are so cute... whereas Michelle and David are just hot hot hot! Two fantastic romance plots, which I am loving! Vicki is disgraceful, she is pure evil - with no redeeming features whatsoever! I really hope she gets her just desserts for her awful treatment of Anthony soon... Anthony is such a sweet, down-to-earth character who is very easy to relate too... and I love him and Mia's blossoming relationship The Megan plot is getting incredibly interesting... I'm not sure whose side to take anymore, tbh! I just hope we see Noah back one day! The aftermath of the siege has been fantastic, and it's been great to see how it has affected everyone over a long period of time The Ava/Steven storyline is also very well written... complex and multi-dimensional, which I love! Charlotte is also an awesome character... please bring her in full-time! Fabulous developments... High Hopes is on fire a the moment! UNKNOWN Things are really hotting up in High Hopes and I'm totally gripped. The Hastings storyline is so sad, heartbreaking, upsetting, inspiring and multi-dimensional. You have done a great job in developing this story. But I can help feeling that the baby daddy is going to come back and throw a spanner in the works. I have to admit also that I feel more sorry for Lindsey than Daniel and Megan, it must so hard for her. Great story Hannah, great talking point. Go on the Farradays, I like how Steven's storyline is going to push them to the forefront. And I like how the Donovans have been pushed into it too! By pushed I mean added to the story to give it depth. It's another good strong topical story. But I'm still waiting for Sophia to get on the act and then the sparks will really start to fly. Poor Anthony! I'm actually beginning to become intrigued by this story. There seems to be more going on in it than first thought. Mia don't be telling that wagon Vicki about Anthony! Well done!
HANNAH Thank you AppleCobbler It was really important to me to make sure I showed the long-term effects of the siege, as I didn't want it to be one of those big storylines that's just forgotten in a few episodes Thank you Caller! The Michelle and David scene took me by surprise, I liked how they bounced off each other, they're definitely one to watch And thank you very much Ross. I admit I wasn't expecting to like Michelle and David, but as soon as I had written their scene, I was surprised at how much I like them. There is definite scope for Charlotte to be around more often and we will see Noah back one day, I promise

1x13: 'I think I would have preferred a visit from the Easter bunny' | Written by Hannah | Episode Thirteen
In the staff room of Canvey Comp, various teachers were gossiping about the rumours of Steven Faraday’s suspension after being accused of inappropriate behaviour with a student. Steven’s mistress Michelle Fox sat awkwardly as her colleagues questioned Steven’s marriage with his wife Sophia. The teachers awkwardly silenced as English teacher Naomi Donovan entered the room, she knew straightaway that they had been talking about the situation between her daughter Ava and Steven; she frowned and sat quietly next to Michelle. Head teacher Charlotte Pope finally made an appearance for the morning’s briefing and soon Steven’s conduct was on the agenda “I won’t lie to you, we are investigating the claims against Steven, but I must remind you, innocent til proven guilty” Charlotte warned her staff, the last thing she needed was the staff gossiping, it was bad enough that the students were already mocking the situation. Naomi shook her head in anger and stood up suddenly “Innocent? There was nothing innocent about a kiss between a teacher and student” Naomi looked around the room as everyone stared in silence “But hey, you all carry on gossiping, I’ll worry about my teenage daughter” Naomi escaped the room, slamming the door on the way out.
*
Anthony Spencer and Mia Faraday stood nervously in front of their Science class, they had spent the whole week planning their presentation and now it was time to put their planning into practice. Mia’s best friend Vicki Connor appeared to be turning over a new leaf as she offered to help the pair play their PowerPoint presentation during their speech, but little did they know that Vicki had an alternative presentation in mind.
*
Josh Connor knocked hesitantly on the front door of Chloe Charles’ flat; he braced himself as she answered the door. She looked excited to see him which made him feel a flash of guilt. She invited him inside and he wordlessly followed her into the living room, he backed away briskly as she tried to kiss him on the lips. “That’s not why I’m here Chloe” Josh began “I’m just going to be honest, this was never meant to turn into anything. I’m not saying this to hurt you Chloe, I thought we were both on the same page, you know, up for a little bit of fun, but I think you want a lot more from me than I can give” Josh waited for Chloe’s response, but she was stunned into silence. “I don’t understand” She finally spoke, a tear formed in her eye, but she refused to let it escape “You used me” She whispered loudly. “I’m sorry” Josh didn’t know what to say, he knew Chloe was right and he didn’t feel good about it. He turned to leave, but then stopped “I really am sorry Chloe, I didn’t want you to get hurt” He finished and he left. Chloe reached for the dining table to hold herself up and she began to cry.
*
Siobhan Spencer smiled wistfully as she stared out of her kitchen window into her garden, she truly felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She had her first session with her counsellor that morning and it felt a relief to be able to put her confusing and painful thoughts into words. She thought her kiss with Josh the previous week; they had spoken on the phone every night since then. She felt like a teenager, a part of her questioned what was happening, but the way she felt, it was addictive and she knew she had to see it through.
*
At Kane Creations, owner Olivia Kane was taken aback to see a huge bunch of flowers in front of her, her boyfriend Matthew Fitzgerald smiled cheekily and kissed her on the cheek “Happy Easter babe” Olivia tried to hide a smile “Sorry to disappoint you, but I think I would have preferred a visit from the Easter bunny, I’m more of a chocolate girl” She teased. Matthew laughed and pulled Olivia’s hand leading outside the salon. She gasped as she saw a 3ft Lindt chocolate Easter bunny, she giggled and looked over at Matthew who just shrugged “You honestly think I didn’t know you were a chocolate girl” He laughed and pulled Olivia into a hug “You’re so gonna make me fat” She rolled her eyes in humour. “Don’t worry babe, I’d still love you if you were fat” Olivia froze as she struggled to comprehend Matthew’s words, she stared at him not really sure what to say. She smiled nervously and he realised why she was being awkward “I meant it Olivia” Matthew admitted and kissed her “I’m falling in love with you” Olivia tried to catch her breath and smiled “I’m falling in love with you too Matthew.”
*
Daniel Hastings walked out to his car where his daughter Megan was waiting patiently inside; he got in and started the engine. Megan stared at him expectantly and then a look of sadness washed over her “She won’t come with me” It wasn’t really a question, Megan knew that her mother Lindsay wouldn’t be able to bring herself to attend her final appointment with her. Daniel shook his head “It’s not too late to change your mind, if you have any doubt in your mind about the termination, it’s not too late” Daniel said supportively. Megan shook her head “This is the right thing to do” Daniel squeezed Megan’s hand affectionately and they pulled out of the driveway.
*
As Mia and Anthony began their life cycle presentation, they were unaware of Vicki’s meddling on the laptop; she quickly pressed play on the voice recording, interrupting the pair’s presentation. Anthony turned around the screen as he recognised Mia’s voice on the recording. Mia gasped in horror as she recalled her conversation with Vicki the previous week. Mia cringed as she heard her and Vicki’s voices “I don’t understand Mia, Anthony couldn’t what?” “You know, rise to the occasion.” Laugher erupted in the classroom, both Mia and Anthony turned a bright shade of red and in horror, Anthony escaped the class, leaving Vicki sat laughing along with the rest of the class. Anthony raced down the hall and into the boy’s bathroom, in distress he locked himself in one of the cubicles and leaned against the wall. He repeatedly smacked his head against the wall before letting himself fall to the floor in tears.
*
At the Faradays, Steven pleaded with his wife Sophia to sit down and talk to him, the couple had avoided discussing Steven’s suspension, but Steven was desperate to explain himself to his wife. She tried to listen to Steven’s defence and promises that nothing had happened with Ava, but she shook her head in frustration “You’re not an idiot Steven, she’s a seventeen year old girl and you’re a young, good looking teacher. All those tuition sessions, you must have realised that she had a crush on you” Sophia reasoned, not understanding how he could let the situation get so out of control. “I talked to Ava, honestly Soph; I could not have made it any clearer. This whole thing is ridiculous. The girl is traumatised from the siege and she has latched onto me because I was there with her when she was injured. It’s all some hero fantasy that she has in her head” Steven paced around the room “She is just a kid, you can’t honestly believe I could be interested in a girl not much older than my daughter” Sophia sighed “Of course I don’t” Sophia stood up and walked over to the window “Steven, things are different between us, they have been for a while. I wouldn’t be surprised if you had looked elsewhere” Steven cringed at the thought, feeling guilty about his affair with Michelle “Sophia, I love you. That hasn’t changed. I need you to be on my side, I can’t get through this without you” Sophia moved closer to Steven and kissed him softly on the lips “I’m always on your side” She promised.
*
Megan hesitated as she heard her name being called for her appointment; she looked at her father Daniel for support. He held on tightly to her hand “Everything is going to be ok Megan” Megan sniffed and blinked away a tear. She stood up, but as she was about to walk into the office, she heard her name being called. She turned around and burst into her tears as she saw her mother Lindsay rushing towards her. Lindsay pulled her into a hug and tearfully apologised “Megan, you’re my little girl and I am going to support whatever decision you feel is best” Lindsay cried, wiping away Megan’s tears “Do you want me to go in with you?” Lindsay asked and Megan nodded emotionally. Hand in hand, Megan and Lindsay walked into the doctor’s office, while Daniel looked on, proud to see his wife coming through for their daughter.

APPLECOBBLERIn all honesty this episode of High Hopes felt a little disjointed for me in parts, with a few of the scenes feeling slightly contrived. It felt out of character for Lindsay to support Megan's termination, considering this is something she has had such strong views on for a while now. The sudden change of heart wasn't really believable, nor does it do her many favours as a character in my eyes. I also felt that at times the description was over the top, although this could only be said of a couple of scenes. In the main this was a strong episode, and the character interactions remain well thought out. I am impressed by how the aftermath of the siege has continued to play out, providing scope for emotional content HANNAHThank you AC. I really struggled with this episode, I just couldn't quite get the writing flow and as you said it felt disjointed, which is how I felt about it. About Lindsay, I see where you're coming from and I think I am at fault there with the writing. I wanted the scenes to show that despite how hurt and how much Lindsay wanted this baby, her love for her daughter Megan was stronger and that is why despite not agreeing with Megan's choice, she still was there in the end to support her. I guess this didn't quite come across in the writing
CALLER Another well-written instalment of High Hopes, well done! It made for emotional reading as the viewers realised Lindsay had decided to join her daughter for her last appointment that would terminate her unborn child; it made us realise how emotional it was for not only Megan, but for everyone around her! Also, the Steven and Ava situation is making for interesting, dramatic and compelling reading as it gets talked about around Canvey Comp and as we see the effects it has on those involved. It's great to see the siege hasn't just been forgotten it's still being mentioned and rightly so. Some soap operas seem to just move on don't they, and make the viewers forget it ever happened! I'm loving this, well done High Hopes is a brilliant show, one of my favourties on the forum HANNAH Thank you very much Caller, I wasn't feeling very confident with this episode as I struggled a little with writer's block, so I am glad it was still enjoyable. It was one of those times that I was just not happy with it no matter how hard I tried. I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I totally agree, one of the things I make sure with both High Hopes and City Girls is that the big storylines have an impact on the characters and their lives for a long time to come. I didn't want the siege to be seen as sensationalist, it was always meant to have a long-term impact on the show
LEM Loving High Hopes, Hannah! The Steven/Ava storyline has been interesting to read, and really well written. I am a 'Jiobhan' Shipper! Great Signature picture by the way, must've taken ages! I felt so sorry for Anthony, Vicki is a right cow! The sooner she gets a serious dose of karma the better! Love the episode names, really creative! HANNAH Thank you so much Lem Lol it did take a while, but at least it looks kind of realistic
ROSS For an episode that was put under strain by writers block, this was a phenomenal episode of High Hopes... as a series, High Hopes gets better with every episode, and I would go as far as to say that - alongside These Days and Park Close - High Hopes is definitely in my top 3 favourite forum shows at the moment... every aspect of the show is just great, and the stories are all so thought out and developed You should be so proud at how HH has panned out
The ongoing Steven and his wandering eye drama is just fantastic... he and Sophia are clearly made for each other, but he and Michelle have really good chemistry... but Michelle should be with David! I'm torn as to who should be with who! Something I am sure of though, is that Ava is one hell of a troublemaker - and the implications of her actions will last for a long time for all involved, in particular Steven! I really want Noah to come back now... he could sort his sister out!
The Olivia/Matthew scene was SO cute! Clearly your writing forté is strong couples with plenty of chemistry, and Molivia (or Olithew? ) are just that... I love them! ...But not as much as I love Jiobhan! As much as I really like Chloe, I am so happy Josh has dumped her, to pave the way for him to get with Siobhan... it really is written in the stars that they should be together, but I hope Chloe sticks around and eventually finds happiness elsewhere, in the aftermath of her break-up with Josh
Vicki is one disturbed young girl... I really hope she gets her comeuppance one day, as she can't get away with doing this to poor Anthony. The scene in which Vicki revealed Mia's embarrassing revelation was so devastating... I could really feel both Anthony and Mia's embarrassment... I hope Vicki's cruel torture doesn't affect their majorly cute relationship Nasty Vicki!
And, finally, the ongoing Daniel/Lindsay/Megan story was very effective in this episode As much as I am sad Megan is having an abortion, seeing Lindsay turn up to support her daughter was a lovely scene... they are an extremely strong family unit, and it's lovely to see that they remain strong together in the face of drama or tragedy The aftermath of the siege has been handled delicately and easily, and this you should be really proud of
Anyway, I better wrap this up now! Sorry for the essay! Brilliant work HANNAH Thank you Ross, you are very kind There is an interesting twist coming up for the foursome that is Sophia, Steven, David and Michelle. I do have a soft spot for Olivia and Matthew. I totally agree about Vicki, she has a real nasty streak. But thank you Ross for the lovely feedback
UNKNOWN This was another fantastic episode! Well done on it! Again the Hastings are at the forefront, I'm glad Lindsey supported Megan but I hope that in the aftermath of this event, Megan will see her mother's pain and be there for her! Poor Anthony, oh man that Vicki, she totally reminds of Maddy from Hollyoaks, I just hate her, I can't like her. She's an out and out bitch! So I'm hoping that there is some character development coming for Vicki as at the moment I can't like her! But Anthony, how embarrassing! And I hope Mia feels bad too! Very well done! X

1x14: 'You're a walking cliché' | Written by Hannah | Episode Fourteen
The corridor outside the office of Canvey Comp’s head teacher Charlotte Pope was very busy that afternoon. The empty school was painfully quiet as the Connors, Spencers and the Faradays waited patiently for their meeting with Charlotte after Vicki Connor’s shameful prank the previous day. Vicki sat quietly next to her mother Heather, while Anthony Spencer sat opposite with his step mother Siobhan. The other end of the corridor sat Mia Faraday with her parents Steven and Sophia. In frustration, Anthony stood up in anger “I’m done” He shouted “I’m not sitting around here near that skank who’s mission it is to make my life hell” Siobhan stood up to calm Anthony down, but she couldn’t get through to him. “I told you Siobhan, I’m done. I’m dropping out of school” Anthony took one last look at Vicki and then stormed down the corridor. Siobhan tried to call after him but he disappeared. She turned around angrily and shouted at Vicki “Are you happy now? You spiteful little girl” Heather stood up in defence of her daughter “Don’t you dare speak to my daughter like that!” Siobhan and Heather traded insults, each defending their child and blaming the other. Sophia tried to calm the two women down, but soon enough Mia’s name was dragged into the argument. “Mia is just as much a victim in this as Anthony” Sophia responded to Siobhan’s accusation that Mia and Vicki were bullying Anthony. Steven felt out of his depth as the three women all began shouting at each other at the same time. A loud slam of the door interrupted the animosity and silence filled the air. Charlotte stared in disgust the three warring women “Mrs Connor, I think you and me need to have a talk about your daughter” She spoke calmly and stared coldly at Heather.
* Olivia Kane walked into her flat after a long day at the salon and rolled her eyes at the sight of her flatmate Chloe Charles snuggled under the duvet cover watching The Notebook. Chocolate wrappers and empty ice cream tubs scattered the floor, Olivia shook her head and pulled the duvet off Chloe. “Josh Connor is not worth the extra inches to your waist” Chloe groaned in frustration “Leave me alone, I’m broken hearted here” Olivia rolled her eyes and laughed “You’re a walking cliché, get up and put your sexiest dress on. It’s the Crown and Horseshoe’s reopening night and you’re supposed to be working. Come on, show that tosser what he’s missing” Olivia encouraged.
*
Ava Donovan sat down glumly next to her mother Naomi in the kitchen, Naomi smiled supportively and lightly stroked Ava’s hair. Ava found it comforting; she had since she was a little girl. Ava began to cry and asked her mum for a cuddle. “I’ve ruined his life Mum” Ava cried. Naomi shook her head in anger “That man has taken advantage of you” Ava sat up and looked at Naomi “He didn’t, Mr Faraday hasn’t done anything wrong. I kissed him Mum, he was pushing me away” Naomi stood up and began to pace around the room “Ava, you wouldn’t have kissed him if he hadn’t have encouraged you.” Ava pleaded with her mother to listen to her, she explained that she had a crush on Steven and had tried to pursue him, but Steven had rejected her from the beginning. “Mum, I’m being completely honest with you now, Mr Faraday did nothing wrong, it was all me. I’ve already told Mrs Pope and she had arranged for me to see a counsellor” Naomi looked at her daughter sadly “I hate seeing you in pain, I should be able to protect you” Ava smiled and held Naomi’s hand “Mum, you can’t protect me from myself” Ava told Naomi to sit down and she made her a cup of tea. For the first time in a while, Ava felt like she could move on with her life. The realisation of what Steven could lose made Ava see that he was right, nothing would ever happen between them, it made Ava feel sad but she began to realise that what she felt for Steven was really just a crush.
*
Daniel Hastings startled his wife Lindsay as he hugged her from behind, he regretted his actions as he realised that she was stills struggling with memories from the siege. He looked around the completely revamped Crown and Horseshoe and helped Lindsay finish putting up the decorations. “You really came through for Megan yesterday” Daniel finally spoke, breaking the silence. “Don’t” Lindsay warned, a coldness in her voice. Lindsay carried on with her decorations while Daniel attempted to change the conversation “Siobhan decided not to come back to work then” He spoke, Lindsay ignored him again. He threw the decorations to the floor and walked out in frustration. Lindsay seemed unfazed by Daniel’s mood.
*
Michael Connor greeted his wife Heather as she walked through the front door with their fifteen year old daughter Vicki. He asked how Heather’s meeting with the head teacher went and Heather revealed that Vicki had been suspended from school for a week. Michael frowned at Vicki while Heather looked at her in disgust. “Get upstairs, I can’t even look at you right now” Heather ordered “Siobhan Spencer was right about you, you’re a spiteful little cow, I am so ashamed of you right now” Without a word, Vicki escaped upstairs leaving Heather and Michael alone. “That was a little harsh” Michael pointed out. Heather glared at her husband “You didn’t have to sit there and listen Charlotte Pope list the vile things that girl has done. I don’t know what we are going to do with her Michael” Heather sighed.
*
Siobhan sat outside Anthony’s bedroom door; she had spent an hour talking to him through the locked door with no response. She had pleaded with him to reconsider his decision to drop out of school, but still she was met with silence. She got up as she heard the door, she walked down the stairs and opened the door to find Josh Connor with a bunch of flowers “I want you to be my date for the reopening tonight” Siobhan glared at him and then abruptly shut the door in his face. Josh stood for a moment in pure confusion before shouting through the door. Eventually Siobhan opened it again “You have a nerve Josh, I’ll give you that” Josh frowned “I have no idea what I am supposed to have done” Siobhan walked into the living room and Josh followed “The trouble your sister has caused, Anthony is in a bad way” Siobhan explained the incident to Josh and he couldn’t believe his little sister could behave so maliciously. He pleaded with Siobhan to put Vicki’s actions aside and to focus on their relationship. Siobhan tried to avoid Josh’s touch “This isn’t going to work Josh, I’m almost old enough to be your mother” Josh kissed Siobhan passionately “Tell me you feel nothing for me and I’ll walk away” Siobhan attempted to pull away, but Josh’s grip on her arms was firm. She closed her eyes and breathing deeply before pulling Josh into a passionate kiss.
*
Sophia brought her daughter Mia a fruit smoothie to cheer her up. Mia confided in her mother how betrayed she felt by her best friend Vicki. Mia began to cry as she thought about having to return to school. Sophia blushed as she brought up the subject of sex with her fourteen year old daughter, Sophia explained that she thought Mia was too young to be having sex “Everyone’s doing it” Mia realised how childish she sounded and got embarrassed. “Honey, losing your virginity isn’t something you can take back and I don’t want you to give it up for peer pressure. You would only end up regretting it and it sounds like Anthony isn’t ready for that step either. I’ve said this to you before, Vicki Connor isn’t your friend. She is a very mixed up girl who thinks she is a lot older than she actually is” Sophia said softly. As she finished speaking, Steven bounced excitedly into the room and told them that the Donovans had dropped their complaint against him. “I want you both to put on a nice dress and get ready for the reopening tonight, we are going to celebrate. This is a new beginning for the three of us” Steven pulled Sophia into a kiss.
*
Chloe smiled brightly as she served the first customer of the night, it felt good to be working at the Crown and Horseshoe again, it felt like things were finally getting back to normal. She made conversation with Kayla Macey and Patrick Hale as they looked around the new pub approvingly. Out the corner of her eye she spotted local garage owner David Fields and she slinked over to him as he waited at the bar. She offered him a drink on the house and he accepted. “I think I was a little hasty” Chloe suddenly blurted out, David looked confused. Chloe carried on “When you asked me out, I think I gave you the wrong answer” David sighed and looked over to the corner of the pub where drama teacher Michelle Fox was standing. “I’m sorry Chloe, I actually think you gave me the right answer” David said apologetically, he thanked Chloe for the drink and walked over to join Michelle.
*
Siobhan took a deep breath as she held onto Josh’s hand, the couple walked into the Crown and Horseshoe. Siobhan froze in fear as she was hit with memories of the siege. She could feel her breathing get quicker and she began to lose her breath. Josh turned around to face Siobhan and touched her face softly “It’s ok Siobhan, I know you can do this. Don’t let them win” He encouraged. She nodded and took another deep breath “I can do this” She repeated over and over again. She clung onto Josh’s hand and they walked over to the bar. Siobhan could feel everyone staring at her; she smiled at Josh, trying to ignore the whispers. Josh leant in and whispered something in Siobhan’s ear. She laughed and kissed him on the lips. Chloe froze at the sight of Josh and Siobhan together; she felt tears form in her eyes, she ran out into the back in distress. While Josh’s mother Heather walked over to them in shock, she slapped Siobhan hard across the face “Get your hands off my son!” She stared at Siobhan in disgust.

APPLECOBBLERAnother strong instalment. The reopening of the pub was very well written, with a real sense of community about it. I was intrigued by the latest dramas for Jiobhan which I hope they can get through somehow! HANNAHThanks so much AC, I found this episode quite enjoyable to write and got a few different characters mixing
CALLER Well, another brilliant episode of High Hopes there, in fact my favourite so far! The dialogue and stories went so well together, and they were slotted in just the right areas so as to achieve the full impact from the reader! I'm loving the fallout from Vicki's actions and I can only imagine the scenes of three mothers ripping each others heads off waiting outside the staff room, trying to defend their child. Charlotte's character is one that I'm loving too, because she handles things so well, so coldly, so bluntly. From Heather's words it seemed like she really gave Vicki what for. Good on her, I say. It was nice to see the fallout from each parent's/child's perspective, and really gave me an insight onto how a situation like this would be handled in real life by all those involved. Really, well done. To add, I'm thoroughly enjoying 'Jiobhan' and am glad that Siobhan is standing up for what she loves, and finally taking in that it doesn't matter how old you are, or what age gap there is between you - it's never too late to fall in love. I have to say HH is one of my favourite projects on here HANNAH Thank you so much Caller, I am so happy that people are enjoying High Hopes, now we're coming to the last quarter of the season, I have to start thinking about a second season and I am definitely feeling it
LEM A fantastic episode of High Hopes. The scene involving Siobhan, Heather and Sophia was great, and you could just feel the cattiness coming through. The last scene was also great, and it'll be interesting to see how the Spencers and Connors cope in the future, with Josh and Siobhan's burgeoning romance - which I'm all for! I love them as a couple, and hope they can get get over their problems, and get together for the long haul There was a strong sense of community, as portrayed through the reopening of the pub - and it's great to see there still is a shadow hanging over the community after the siege. I'm loving High Hopes at the moment HANNAH Thank you Lem, the first scene between the women was one of my favourites to write. I could really picture the scene. The next episode carries on from where this one left off so we'll get to see where Josh's loyalties lie
ROSS HH continues to flourish, and is making it's way up my list of 3 Favourite Forum Projects Ever! I'm so glad that Vicki's disgusting ways have finally been let out of the bag... I can only hope that Anthony can begin to move on without the evil shadow of Vicki Connor hanging over him 24/7 I also hope that Anthony and Mia's relationship can survive all of this - even though I agree with Sophia that Mia and Anthony are too young to lose their virginities! I agree with Caller... Charlotte is a fantastic character - and I really hope we see her more in the show... even outside of the school! Josh and Siobhan are just amazing... I think it's safe to say that "Jiobhan" is the first soap couple pairing (other than "Gragia", of course! ) that I have fallen in love with... they are so well suited, and work incredibly well with one another... they bounce off each other so well in every scene they share - and I LOVE them! I really hope they can overcome their troubles... if Josh chooses his famly's happiness over his happiness, I will rage big time! Michelle and David continue to shine as another brilliant pairing; as much as I love "Jiobhan", my heart broke for poor Chloe... it's good that she has such a good friend helping her through it such as Olivia ; I hope we'll be seeing more of Kayla and Patrick soon... they're great characters! ; the re-opening of the pub was brilliant, and the community element of the show really came out!
High Hopes continues to impress! HANNAH Thank you very much Ross, seeing your feedback really makes me realise how far High Hopes has come and makes me feel more confident for the future. Charlotte is definitely a character with potential, she was a last minute add and she seems to be proving to be a good addition, I may have to think of upgrading her to the regular cast.
UNKNOWN THIS WAS THE BEST EPISODE TO DATE! I loved it, the Spencers, Connors, Farradays dramas were brilliant. I was completely immersed in the drama of the story. It was brilliantly written and paced. The fallout throughout the episode was excellent. This story has come out of left field and just exploded. More of this character-lead and story-driven stuff, and complex multi-character dilemmas. I loved every minute!

1x15: 'He's living out the cougar fantasy' | Written by Hannah | Episode Fifteen
It was the reopening night of the Crown and Horseshoe pub after the terrifying siege that affected the whole community. The night had barely started and the drama had already begun, Siobhan Spencer and Heather Connor stood opposite each other, both in shock but for very different reasons. Siobhan held her face where Heather had just slapped her. “You’re disgusting, taking advantage of my son” Heather spat angrily. “How dare you! Josh is an adult, completely capable of making his own decisions” Siobhan fought back, standing up for herself. Before Heather could slap Siobhan again, Josh dove into the middle of his mother and his girlfriend. Back off Mum!” He warned, he defiantly grabbed hold of Siobhan’s hand and held onto it tightly “Siobhan and I are together and we are happy, you don’t get a say in this” He led Siobhan over to an empty table leaving Heather standing open mouthed and speechless.
*
Naomi and Cole Donovan walked confidently into the Crown and Horseshoe, their daughter Ava followed them nervously behind. She felt like she was being stared at, embarrassed that most of the island knew about her crush on her teacher Steven Faraday. She blushed as she saw Steven sitting with his wife Sophia looking more in love than ever. The couple noticed the Donovan’s entrance and walked awkwardly over to them. Ava finally spoke and broke the silence “Mr Faraday, I’m really sorry for the way I have behaved and the trouble it’s caused” Steven smiled sympathetically, he had been unable to stay angry with Ava now that she had told the truth “I think we should put the past behind us and forget it ever happened” Cole and Naomi stood awkwardly, Cole stepped forward and held out his hand to Steven, Steven shook his Cole’s hand as Sophia offered to buy them a drink. Ava and Steven held back as the others walked over to the bar “I am really sorry Steven, I get that you don’t feel the same way about me and I never meant to get you into trouble” Ava hesitated for a moment “And I promise to keep quiet about Miss Fox” Steven breathed a sigh of relief, feeling a little guilty for the position he had put Ava in. The truth was, he had handled the situation badly from the beginning “Just so you know Ava, my relationship with Michelle is over. This whole situation has made me realise how much Sophia means to me and I don’t want anything to ruin that”
*
Michelle Fox giggled as David Fields finished telling her the story of his brother’s stag night in Ireland; she noticed Steven sitting with his wife Sophia and frowned. David followed Michelle’s glance and nodded knowingly. “I’m guessing Steven Faraday is your mystery man” Michelle blushed and admitted that David was right. “I’m not proud of myself. It just happened” David took a sip of his beer “I would never judge you Michelle. People make mistakes and get caught up in situations, believe me I know. Do you love him?” David asked bluntly. Michelle thought for a moment “I thought I did, but now I’m not quite sure” David looked over at Steven laughing with his wife and rolled his eyes “Because of the rumours about him” Michelle shrugged “I think I started having doubts before all this stuff with Ava. I think I have finally realised that there are other men in the world other than Steven Faraday” Michelle blushed as she realised how obvious she sounded, she jumped up and asked David if he wanted another drink and she quickly escaped to the bar.
*
Duncan Faraday ordered a bottle of champagne and handed a glass to each of his family “Hold on Dad, the girls can’t drink. I don’t want us to get shut down for underage drinking the same night we reopen” Duncan's daughter Lindsay Hastings laughed. “Oh Lindsay, it’s just half a glass. No one will know” Duncan smiled, passing a glass each to his granddaughters Mia and Megan. Duncan looked around at his family, Steven and Sophia constantly gazing at each other lovingly, Mia joking and laughing with Megan, Daniel and Lindsay sat next to each other, trying not to look as awkward as they felt. Duncan smiled “I would like to propose a toast” Duncan began “Lindsay and Steven, my beautiful children. I am so proud of you both, you have been through so much tragedy, but you have both come out the other side and you have given me two lovely granddaughters. So tonight is all about new beginnings” Duncan took a sip of his champagne, he caught the eye of his friend Katherine Lavery and raised a glass to her, she smiled and nodded her head in response.

Michael Connor tried to calm his wife Heather down after her altercation with Siobhan, but so far he wasn’t having much luck “The cheek of that woman, looking down her nose at our daughter and the whole time she was taking advantage of our son” Heather ranted. Michael sipped his pint calmly “Somehow I can’t quite see anyone taking advantage of our son” He looked over at Josh and Siobhan who were sat close to each other, ignoring the glares of the community. “Just leave them to it Heather, you know what Josh is like, he’ll get bored soon enough” Heather frowned at how casually her husband was taking the news “How would you feel if it was Vicki who was sleeping someone old enough to be her father?” Michael sighed and stood up “Stop being a drama queen, I’m getting another pint” Michael walked over to the bar where Josh was now stood. “I’d avoid your mother for the next few weeks if I were you” He warned his son, Josh shrugged “This isn’t a phase Dad, I really care about Siobhan, I won’t let Mum ruin this for me” Michael patted Josh on the back “Let your Mum calm down and get over the shock. I’m sure she’ll come round.” Josh looked over at Heather, who just glared at him in anger.
BREAK Steven finally managed to find Michelle outside smoking a cigarette; he stood next to her awkwardly. Michelle broke the silence “You’re going to try and work things out with Sophia” She spoke, her voice emotionless. Steven stood for a moment before answering “I’m sorry Michelle” He felt at a loss of what to say. Michelle shrugged “I think I always knew that you would never leave Sophia. Let’s not get emotional about this Steven, we both wanted a little fun and we got caught up in the risk and romance of it, you love Sophia, I can see that” Michelle leant in and kissed Steven on the cheek “I think it’s time we both moved on with our lives” She whispered, putting her cigarette out at the same time. Michelle took one last look at Steven and re-entered the pub where David was waiting for her.

Olivia Kane and her boyfriend Matthew Fitzgerald stood against the bar laughing and kissing, Olivia’s friend and flatmate Chloe Charles rolled her eyes as she walked over to serve them. “I think I just vomited a little in my mouth” Chloe cringed. Matthew excused himself and left Olivia to cheer up her friend. Olivia tried to convince Chloe to stop staring at Josh and Siobhan “He’ll get bored of Saint Siobhan eventually, once he realises how saggy her boobs are and how close she is to the menopause” Olivia laughed, but Chloe was still not smiling “I don’t get it, why would he choose her over me?” Chloe questioned. Olivia reached over the bar and pushed Chloe affectionately “He’s living out the cougar fantasy, come on Chlo, there’s plenty of men around to distract you” Olivia looked around and frowned as she noticed that all the men in the pub seemed to be attached “Well, maybe you need to look a little further than Canvey Island”

David walked over to Siobhan and Josh who were sat awkwardly at the table in the corner; he greeted them pleasantly and encouraged them not to pay attention to the island gossips. He soon changed the subject “I hope you don’t mind, but Michelle mentioned that your Anthony has decided to leave school. He’s spent a bit of time at the garage recently and he seems to know a lot about cars” David explained. Siobhan smiled and nodded “Anthony’s father was really into cars, Anthony used to help Rob work on this old car before he died” Siobhan smiled wistfully at the memory. “I’ve talked it through with Patrick and if Anthony wants to, he can have a job. Well an apprenticeship, there’s a college in Portsmouth which offers an afternoon a week in the classroom then the rest of the time he can work at the garage, what do you think?” Siobhan looked at Josh excitedly and then answered David. “This is amazing David, thank you. I’ll talk to Anthony tonight” David told Siobhan to give him a call and then returned to Michelle. Siobhan kissed Josh affectionately “Finally, things seem to be going right for us” Josh laughed and stroked Siobhan’s face “Life is going to get a hell of a lot better”

Lindsay was stood frozen to the spot as stared at the newspaper clipping which had been left on the bar, she stared at the familiar face in the photograph. She looked over to where the Donovans were sat, she shivered as she watched Cole chatting happily to his daughter Ava and Lindsay’s own daughter Megan. Lindsay walked briskly over to her husband Daniel and showed him the newspaper article “I don’t want him here Daniel, he’s a murderer and he is sat next to our fifteen year old daughter” Daniel followed Lindsay’s gaze and walked over to the Donovans awkwardly. “I’m really sorry Cole, but I think you should leave” Daniel said abruptly. Cole looked at his wife Naomi in confusion and then stood up to speak to Daniel “Is there something wrong?” Daniel showed Cole the newspaper article and Cole understood. He quietly put on his jacket as Naomi questioned what was going on. “Just leave it Naomi” Naomi shook her head defiantly “No, I am not going to let this happen to you Cole. You don’t deserve it” Lindsay walked over to join forces with Daniel “I’ve had enough of this” Lindsay complained about Daniel’s soft approach “I will not have a murderer in my pub” Lindsay said loudly causing the pub to quieten and listen to their confrontation. Everyone stared at Cole and Naomi as they stood in the middle of the pub, Naomi could feel the blush rising up her neck “You’re quick to judge Lindsay, I thought you were better than that” Naomi said sadly and held onto Cole’s hand loyally. Naomi, Cole and Ava walked out of the Crown and Horseshoe, Ava clinging onto her mother’s hand as the realisation hit them that their life on Canvey Island would not be the same.

In between the trees, a few metres away from the Crown and Horseshoe, a figure stood in the darkness. Noah Donovan watched as his family left the pub looking upset, carrying his back pack Noah walked briskly over to them. Naomi cried in delight as she caught sight of her son while Ava dove into her brother’s arms, relieved to finally have him back. Cole pulled his wife and his two children close to him protectively. At last, the family were back together and ready to face what the community throws at them.
