19:00-19:30 | 3rd September 2024 (Tuesday)
At Leicester St. Mary's Hospital, 40yo redhead Lisa Wright is attending an appointment with her psychologist, Hinda Hussain, but the atmosphere looks and feels surreal. "So... long story short, there was just nothing left for me in Cardiff" Lisa tells Hinda. "And when this opportunity to move to Leicester came up I thought... why not? It's as good a place as any to make a fresh start." Hinda nods. "And is that what you felt you needed? It's a big step for someone born and raised in the same city all those years." Lisa bows her head. "I know. But so much had happened. Most of it bad. The idea of moving somewhere completely alien, where nobody knows you. That would terrify most people. But to me it felt like a second chance. No strings, no ties and no chance of bumping into someone you'd rather not! But I knew I couldn't waste that chance. And I didn't." Hinda smiles cautiously through her silky red hijab.
"Tell me about Glen, your husband. You say you met him at... The Moonshine Inn?" Hinda observes, checking her notes. Lisa's face instantly warms. "Yeah. Literally I was just having a drink at the bar on my own. And Glen comes up to me and says "Same again?" with this cheeky grin. I can't really explain it but... Immediately I just felt so safe with him. I fell hard" she titters. "And before long, so did he. But you know... it wasn't without its consequences." Hinda nods. "You say you haven't been sleeping well lately. Can you tell me about that?" Lisa sighs. "I've been feeling anxious. Well, more anxious than usual. And I feel guilty that Glen's the only one bringing any money in at the moment." Hinda tilts her head curiously. "And what do you think's behind that anxiety and guilt?" Lisa scoffs. "Where do I start?" she asks rhetorically...
In the flat above The Moonshine Inn, a family pub in town, landlady Maxine Donnelly is slowly glancing through a family photo album wistfully in the living room, as the radio plays quietly in the background. She lands on a picture of her son, Noah, his wife Scarlett and their two children, Finn and Marnie. In the picture, which was taken recently, everyone has a smile, but Noah looks like he can barely muster one. Maxine frowns at this, before being joined by husband and pub landlord Phil from downstairs. "Max" he exclaims softly, prompting her to glance at him. "The punters made quite a mess last night you know, I can't clean it all meself." She returns her gaze to the photo album. "Yeah sorry Phil. I'll be down in a minute." "Eh... no one has a physical photo album nowadays!" he jokes, joining her on the sofa. "Well you can call me an old fuddy-duddy if you like", she exclaims, "but I'm old skool and proud! There's something about being able to touch the pictures that makes them... special." He kisses her on the side of the head. "If you say so, love. That one's recent isn't it?" he observes of Noah and his family. "Yeah" she confirms. "Do you think Noah looks a bit sad in that one? I've never noticed before but he does." Phil frowns. "Well it was a barbeque wasn't it? Probably more interested in the sausages! Eh... you're not getting clucky again are ya? Cos if you are you've left it a bit late" he jokes, as he and Maxine are now in their 60s.
"Don't be daft" she chides humorously. "But I am thinking about the future. I suppose I've got used to all the kids having left home now but... maybe it's time we thought about downscaling." He asks what she means. "Well if we moved in with me mam for example, we could rent this flat out. And she'd have some company and someone to help her with the shopping." Phil recoils. "Why would we do that? You know I'm talking to someone about buying into this place as a sleeping partner." She gets up. "And how long's all that gonna take, Phil? Meanwhile we're haemoragghing money left, right and centre because -" She stops short. "Because of me, you mean" he offers. She sighs. "Well honestly, yes. I mean everyone knows gambling's a mug's game, how could you be so stupid?" He gets up looking defeated. "I'll finish downstairs on me own" he mutters before heading off, leaving behind an upset Maxine...
At home, health board executive Gavin Archer is putting the finishing touches to a fancy breakfast for him and wife Helen to enjoy when she comes downstairs. As he finishes laying the table just so, Helen herself joins him. "Ooh, what's all this?" she exclaims, looking fascinated. "It's not our wedding anniversary is it?" He smirks. "No, not yet. But since we're both on annual leave, I thought it was time I made a fuss of my beautiful wife." She approaches him and they share a kiss. "Oh aye? And what else did you have in mind?" He kisses her again. "Well that would be telling now, wouldn't it?" he jokes, as they kiss and giggle. "Oi" exclaims a voice coming downstairs - that of their youngest son, 16yo Reuben. "Whatever this is, do it when there's no kids around!" he jokes. "You're hardly a kid anymore, Reuben" observes Gavin. "Aren't you starting college tomorrow?" Reuben rolls his eyes. "That's still a couple of weeks off, Dad" he reminds Gavin.
Helen asks Reuben if he is off out. "Yeah I am actually. Look you might as well know... I've decided to take up running. And I'm off for me first run." Helen nods. "I see. What's brought this on then?" Reuben shrugs. "Just wanna be in good shape that's all." Gavin arches an eyebrow. "Nothing to do with the football team captainancy being vacant then?" he suggests. "Might be. Cos I want it!" confirms Reuben. "Don't get carried away, love" advises Helen, prompting Reuben to ask what she means. "Well Jerome's only just left as your coach, hasn't he? And they haven't replaced him yet." Reuben nods. "Yeah, exactly. And when they do, I have to stand out if I wanna be chosen as the new captain. So I've gotta be A-game. And that's why I'm running. Laters!" And with that, he hurries off. "Oh Gavin" exclaims Helen. "I'm worried he's getting carried away with all this captaincy malarkey. They might not even pick him." Gavin sighs. "Yeah well... that's not the only problem we've got right now." Helen asks what he means. "The truth is Helen... the Leicester Lions already have a new coach. Me."
Back at the hospital, Lisa's appointment with psychologist Hinda continues, with the former speaking. "It's coming up to ten years now... since I lost custody of my son, Rhys" Lisa explains. "He lives in Cardiff with his dad and... his wife. Not a day goes by when I don't think of him. And not a day goes by when that doesn't kill me knowing it. It's the one bit of my past I really can't change." Hinda gazes curiously. "Can't change at all? Have you considered... reaching out? Maybe through social services?" Lisa sighs. "No. Maybe it's just been too long. I mean... he's my darling boy but to him I'm a complete stranger. Anyway, I know Rhys is safe and well. And that has to be enough for me. At least until he grows up. And it's why I've never been able to face having another baby. The thought of... losing that somehow... I can't go through that. Glen understands. But I feel like I'm leading him on promising a baby of our own 'one day'. Hinda nods. "Leading him on?" she observes. Lisa sighs. "The truth is... I'm late. But I've also been having mood swings and... feeling hot. I think I'm perimenopausal, Hinda. And if I am then... the chances of getting pregnant again are slim to none. So where does that leave my marriage?"
At Doyle's, a popular local café in town, Phil stews alone over an increasingly lukewarm coffee. "Phil?" asks Liz Doyle, the proprietor. "I don't think staring into your coffee's gonna make it go hot again." "Eh?" he exclaims. "Let me get you another, on the house" she offers. He sighs. "Ta Liz. She decides to join him. "Everything alright?" she asks. "Things still a bit up and down between you and Maxine?" He glances at her. "I've made a right mess of things because of the gambling" he admits. "It was just a bit of fun at first, you know. That's all it was ever meant to be. It wasn't supposed to become so... heavy. And now the pub's struggling." She frowns. "Really? I know I only go in sometimes but when I do it it always seems to be full of life." "Yeah well sometimes isn't enough anymore" he concedes. "Maxine thinks we should move in with Trish and rent the flat out to make some extra money." She nods. "I see. And what do you think?"
He smirks sarcastically. "I think Trish is alright in small doses, but I've no intention of living with her! But Max is right about one thing, Liz. We've gotta do something. We've got no kids, no money. I'm worried she might leave me." Liz asks if he really thinks things are that bad. "Well I've got something in the pipeline but... if it doesn't come through... I know I'm not good enough for her. No one needs to tell me that. But she's me world. I can't do this without her." Liz pats his shoulder. "I'll get you that coffee." And with that she leaves him be, just as his phone rings out. He intends to ignore it but he changes his minds after the second ring when he sees who it is, and answers it. "Hiya" he greets the mystery caller. "Yeah yeah, fine. Are you calling about what I think you're calling about?" The conversation continues. "Yeah course I am, yeah... What sort of conditions?"
In Linford Park, which links two halves of the city centre, the weather is soft and sunny as Gavin and Helen stroll arm-in-arm together. "The thing is Gavin - and don't take this the wrong way - aren't you a bit old to be coaching some teeange footie team?" He scoffs. "You always speak as you find, don't you?" he observes jokingly. "Look, it's not a physical role if that's what you're worried about." She looks down. "It's not just that. Your job at the health board already keeps you busy enough. Are you not taking on too much?" He sighs. "Look, the truth is... it's only temporary. This coaching thing. Jerome didn't give much notice so it's all a bit last minute. Once they find someone more permanent they'll become coach. But for now it's me or nobody, Helen. Anyway, is this what you want to be talking about on my last day of leave?" She chuckles. "Suppose not. We've had a nice morning though haven't we?" He kisses her. "We have."
But the moment is interjected by a call on his phone. "Oh, it's Vanessa" he moans. "Does she not know you're still on leave?" asks Helen. "Yeah but I said I'd take urgent calls" he concedes. "Sorry, I'd better take this. Morning Liz" he greets a passing Liz, as he heads for a nearby bench alone. "Everything all right?" Liz asks Helen. "Yeah just a business call" replies Helen. "Don't normally see you out and about at this time of day." Liz rolls her eyes. "Eurgh, one of my suppliers has screwed up an order, I have to go down there and sort it out. Anyway they're not far and it's a nice day so I didn't see the point in driving." Helen nods attentively. "Have you shut up shop then?" "No, I've left Caitlin in charge for a bit. I said she didn't have to but she insisted. If only all my staff were so keen!" Helen smiles. "Well, she's a teenager. I'm sure she'll grow out of it!" Liz chuckles.
"Speaking of teenagers, how's your Reuben?" "Yeah, fine. Apparently he's taken up running. He wants to be the new captain of the Leicester Lions." Liz looks surprised. "Well well. Doesn't Jerome run that?" "No, not anymore. They've got an interim coach at the moment. The thing is it's Gavin." Liz glances at Gavin in response. "Oh! Little bit of nepotism going on there is there?" she jokes, but it goes down with Helen like a lead balloon, prompting Liz to cough awkwardly. "Ahem! Anyway... is that why you're looking so worried?" Helen sighs. "No, course not. And I'm not worried about Reuben being picked as captain. It's how he'll take it if his own dad doesn't pick him that bothers me."
Lisa's appointment with psychologist Hinda continues at the hospital. "Do you think Glen would leave you if you didn't have a baby with him?" Hinda asks bluntly, clearly riling Lisa. "What? I don't know! And anyway, it's not that simple. Not with two adopted teenagers who still need parenting." Hinda checks her notes. "Ah yes er... Liam and Danielle isn't it?" Lisa calms. "Yes. It was Glen's idea to adopt actually. I wasn't sure at first but... once I got used to the idea, I wondered why we didn't do it years ago. Initially we fostered Liam. He was always a nice lad, but he had a few anger issues. He's never been violent, but he did have a temper and found it hard to calm down. But we haven't seen that side of him much. He tried kicking off with Glen a few times but he didn't get very far! Glen knows how to get through to him, that became obvious very quickly. And then I'd be good cop telling Liam everything was gonna be fine. It felt so right, and nobody came forward to adopt him, so we thought... what the hell? If he wants us to adopt him, we will. So we did."
"Then about a year ago, we decided to adopt again, Danielle this time. The thing about Danielle is, she looks a bit mean and moody sometimes but... underneath, she's a kitten really. We worried about how Liam and Danielle would get along but wow, when they met it was like they'd known each other forever. For us they were like a piece of the jigsaw in our lives we didn't even know was missing." Hinda furrows her brow. "So you mentioned these dreams you've been having. What kind of dreams?" Lisa frowns. "Just dreams. Anxiety dreams. And at the end of them I see Glen's first wife for some reason." Hinda tilts her head. "First wife?" "Yes. Anita her name is. Anita Jackson." Anita herself can then be seen turning 180 degrees from back to front, smirking smugly at the camera. At this point, a clammy, panting Lisa wakes up alone, in the dark, on her sofa. The whole 'meeting' between her and Hinda was an anxiety dream itself...
In the flat above the pub Maxine is having a coffee and checking her phone when Phil returns. "Hi" she greets. "Hiya" he replies. "Sorry I've been out so long. Caught up with some pals and lost track of time." Maxine nods. "Not avoiding me then?" "No. Just giving you space." She sighs before walking over to him. "I don't need space, Phil" she assures him, embracing him in a hug. "I need you. And I always will." He scoffs. "You sure about that? Come on. Better get down there, it's pretty busy." Maxine takes his hand. "Never mind the punters for a minute. Come and sit down." She takes a breath as they sit on their sofa. "I'm sorry about what I said this morning. I don't blame you for how things are. It's just... it's been a stressful year." He nods. "Yeah I know. It's been hard for both of us. And that's on me. Nobody needs to tell me cos I see it in the mirror every day." She tilts her head sympathetically. "Oh, Phil... I haven't really thought much about how this affects you too." He nods. "Yeah. But there might finally be a light at the end of this tunnel." She asks what he means. "That er... that silent partner I've been telling you about. They rang me earlier and we talked." She nods. "Okay. And?" "They're in. They want to invest in the business as a partner." Maxine scoffs. "Well that's... that's amazing! Isn't it?" she checks, sensing his doubt. "Yeah no, yeah course it is. It's a game-changer for us." Maxine's confidence looks restored. "Absolutely! So who is it then? Someone I know?" Phil looks anxious at this but tries not to show it...
• Back at home, Gavin has just made himself and Helen a cup of tea, which he gives to her as she talks. "I mean you know what Reuben's like" she opines. "He always has to be the best at everything, the leader, the cream of the crop. But how's he gonna take it if he's not picked as captain when his dad's his coach?" Gavin sits down with her. "I think you're getting a bit ahead of yourself, love" he insists. "First of all I have to see what the players are like in action and how they interact with each other. So whoever I choose as captain will be based on merit whether it's Reuben or not. And besides, they might find a new coach before any of that even happens." Helen holds her hands up. "Okay, fine. But what if he takes it badly?". "Helen, he's 16. He's not a little kid anymore. Sometimes you get what you want and sometimes you get disappointed, that's life. And if he wants to be treated maturely than he has to act maturely regardless of what happens".
"Anyway, enough about Reuben. Have you had a nice day?" She smiles warmly. "Course I have. To tell you the truth, we don't spend enough time together. I know we've got busy jobs and it's time consuming but... I love it when it's just us. Like the old days." He smirks. "Yeah I know. We'll have to get better at making more time for each other, won't we?" But before she can respond, there's a knock or two at the front door. Helen frowns. "Bit late for callers, isn't it?" she observes. "Yeah, it is a bit" he agrees, before going to answer it. "Keeley! Saffron!" he exclaims at his youngest daughter Keeley and his 11yo granddaughter Saffron respectively. "Hi Dad" greets Keeley, as a glum Saffron stays silent. "Look, I'm sorry we've turned up unannounced but... we need somewhere to stay." Helen joins them. "What on earth is going on, Keeley Archer!" she exclaims. Keeley looks sheepish. "The thing is Mum... I've left Mariusz. It's over." Gavin and Helen stare at each other in disbelief...
AND, what appears to be very early the next morning, Lisa is making herself a coffee in the kitchen when she is joined by husband Glen from upstairs. Danielle and Liam are still in bed. "Hey" he greets. "Hey" she replies softly. He smiles softly. "Look I er... hope you didn't mind me letting you sleep on the sofa last night. It's just... with you having trouble sleeping lately, I thought it was best to leave you there." She nods. "Yeah it's fine, honestly. And I feel much better now. Thank you for putting a blanket on me." He bows his head. "Did you er... have any bad dreams last night?" Lisa looks ambiguous. "Er, yes. One or two. Nothing serious though." Glen looks concerned, which makes Lisa feel defensive. "Right..." he mutters. "Anyway, you're er... seeing the psychologist later aren't you? How you feeling about that?" Lisa looks confused. "Psychologist? You mean Hinda? But that was yesterday".
He recoils. "No, Lis. The appointment with Hinda is today. Lunchtime I think. Don't you remember?" Lisa is unsure how to respond. "Yeah. Yeah of course I just... sorry, I'm not awake yet. Hence the coffee! Can I make you one?" He smiles faintly. "No I er, I'm gonna jump in the shower before work. Someone has to keep the money coming in!" he jokes, but she does not see the funny side. "What's that supposed to mean?" she chides. He sighs. "Nothing. I'll see you later" he declares, before heading upstairs. Now alone, Lisa pants to herself in the dimly-lit kitchen; she feels like her head is about to explode. Then, unexpectedly, there's a knock at the front door. Lisa checks the kitchen clock; it is only 7am. Nevertheless, the caller knocks again. Overwhelmed by curiosity, she opens the front door to see who it is - Anita. "Hello Lisa. Long time, no see," she greets, with a certain coldness. Lisa asks what she is doing here. "I'm taking back what's mine. And I'm not leaving... until I get it." Anita then smirks darkly, as a visibly horrified Lisa pants heavily. Then suddenly, Lisa wakes up from her dream within a dream, sweating, wide-eyed and gasping for air as she sits bolt upright...

Welcome back, These Days! Pure Drama feels as though it’s well and truly launched now with the return of the best project in the forum’s history. Lisa and Glen were, as ever, a hugely entertaining part of this opening episode. I will never tire of seeing their marriage implode on itself! I’m glad to see the effort you’re putting into ensuring Lisa is just as strong a character as Glen, that really shone through with her being this edition’s leading character. The double dream twist was great! Cannot wait to see Anita cause havoc once more! The scenes with Phil and Maxine were great - they’ve always been one of my favourite couples in the show previously. I’m excited to find out who the secret investor is to help save the pub. My money is on Anita! Reuben is not going to be a happy bunny when he finds out that Gavin is the team’s interim coach! And I’m looking forward to seeing whatever drama Keeley brings to the table this time around. Helen calling out her full name in their final scene made me laugh! The Archer unit are already coming across as a very entertaining but warm set-up that I’m sure will be great to watch develop. A more low-key start than I was expecting, but a brilliant one nevertheless. More soon please! X

The Archer unit are already coming across as a very entertaining but warm set-up that I’m sure will be great to watch develop. A more low-key start than I was expecting, but a brilliant one nevertheless. More soon please! X Thanks hun! I mean if Glisa's marriage isn't imploding, what even is it? Yes when Hurricane Anita blows in it will be carnage from the word go Phaxine are a favourite of mine too, I think they are the most real and relatable couple. I've really enjoyed writing the Archers as, apart from Keeley, they are ostensibly an entirely new family. Generally speaking their dramas will be of the more earthy variety, which I think strikes a nice balance with some of the more dramatic characters elsewhere! Helen and Keeley's relationship is quite complex as in many ways they are polar opposites. The love is there, but so is the friction. I very much wanted a low-key start, just to set things up but enough to hopefully tantalise people! I'm very very conscious of pacing this time round and don't want to rush the many stories TD has to tell! And there will absolutely be more soon, thanks so much! X

19:00-19:30 | 4th September 2024 (Wednesday)
It is a new morning at the Archer family household, as mum Helen stirs a cup of coffee in the kitchen, soon joined by husband Gavin, suited and booted as he prepares for work. "Ooh! Morning" she greets him. "Looking very smart, Gavin!" He fiddles with his collar. "Yeah well, when you've been on leave I suppose you've gotta make a bit of an effort on the first day back!" he opines. "Any sign of Keeley or Saffron yet?" he asks, referring to their daughter and granddaughter respectively. Helen sighs. "Not yet. It is still early, though. Got time for a coffee? You can have mine if you like." He grimaces. "Thanks love but I'm pushing it as it is. I'll get something on the way maybe." At this point, they are joined by Keeley, who turned up unannounced last night with 11yo Saffron, having left her partner, Mariusz. "Morning" she mutters. "Keeley!" he exclaims, but she looks despondent. "Need a hug?" he offers sympathetically. Keeley smiles sadly and they share a warm embrace. "I know it's hard love. Breaking up with someone" advises Gavin. "But you'll bounce back. We've missed you." She smiles at him, before asking if he is off to work. "Unfortunately, yes" he admits. "Bad timing, I know." Keeley nods. "It's okay, Dad. I'm not going anywhere." He smiles faintly. "Alright. Well I'll leave you to it then. See you tonight."
And with that, both Helen and Keeley say goodbye to him - promptly followed by an awkward silence between them that goes on a little too long. "Come on then, Mum. Let's get this over with" Keeley eventually interjects. "What do you mean?" asks Helen, playing the innocent. "The big lecture about what a disaster my love life is and how I never get it right. Surely you've got something to say about it?" Helen recoils. "No less than you have. Why don't you want to talk about it? Cos you think I'll lecture you?" Keeley shrugs. "Well, that's how this normally goes." Helen looks sheepish. "Well... I have no idea what happened. Can hardly judge you if you won't say anything. Joke!" Keeley sighs. "I really tried, Mum. Mariusz made it impossible. Saffron won't even talk to me. It's all such a mess."
Helen nods. "Okay. Well you tell me in your own time. Whatever it is, it's obviously a lot. Are you sticking around? For good?" Keeley shrugs. "Probably. Why?" "Well, I assume you've left your old job in Loughborough?" Keeley grimaces. "Kind of. It was a temporary rolling contract, Mum. It just didn't get renewed this time. Are you saying I should look for a job? I've only just got here!" Helen smirks. "I know that. But it would give you something to think about that's not Mariusz. And while you're out doing that, I'll try and get through to Saffron. Cos you're not getting very far are you?" she chides, as Keeley looks offended. "Sorry, sorry. Slip of the tongue." Keeley shakes her head. "Fine. I'll go and have a shower then." As Keeley heads off, a concerned Helen sips on her coffee...
Meanwhile at the Wright abode, marrieds Lisa and Glen are in the kitchen with adoptive teenagers Liam Hardacre and Danielle Parfitt, as three of them wish a smiling but slightly embarrassed Danielle, who is still in her onesie, a happy 16th birthday. "Make a wish!" jokes Lisa, as Danielle cringes. "Eugh, I'm not 5, Lisa!" Danielle jokes. "Okay, I wish I wasn't dressed in my onesie for this!" Glen smiles. "Sorry, Danielle. But you're only 16 once and we just wanted to make it unforgettable." Danielle nods with a smile. "Well, mission accomplished! Thank you guys but... 8am is a bit early for birthday cake!" Liam leans over to pick it up. "I'll stick it in the fridge, yeah?" he offers. "Thanks Liam" Lisa exclaims. "But we do have a confession to make. That's not your actual birthday cake." "Oh?" Danielle mutters. Glen nods. "Yeah we've got the real one for later. And we might have another confession to make." Liam returns to them. "Yeah, so don't hate me Dan but... I might've accidentally told these guys about the party you organised."
Danielle recoils. "Liam! Look sorry guys, I didn't wanna hurt your feelings." Lisa puts her arms around Danielle. "Listen sweetheart. We're not that old! The last thing a 16yo wants on their birthday is their parents hanging around like- sorry, not parents. I mean..." Danielle interjects. "It's okay, Lisa. And you, Glen. You guys are my parents." Glen smiles. "What Lisa was trying to say is... we're not gonna be around tonight. We just want you to have a good time with your friends. As long as you have the party here." Danielle scoffs in amazement. "Seriously?" Lisa nods. "Yeah. We trust you. And don't worry about cleaning the place up. It'll give me something to do in the morning. As long as it doesn't look like a war zone!" Danielle titters. "I promise it won't. Thanks, guys. Right, I really need to get dressed!" And with that, Danielle heads upstairs. "You will look after her tonight, won't you Liam?" He nods. "Yeah course. Right, I'm off for a run. I'm gonna teach Reuben a few tricks because he hasn't got a clue! See you later." Lisa smiles. "You should probably get to work as well" she advises Glen. "Yeah I will it's just... are we gonna talk about your bad dreams or are we just gonna pretend they never happened?" Lisa sighs. "Not now, Glen. Look, I've got the counselling at lunchtime and we're on a date tonight anyway. We'll talk about it then."
At The Moonshine Inn pub, landlady Maxine Donnelly is busy setting up downstairs, when she is joined by husband and landlord Phil from upstairs. "Max?" he exclaims. "You took your time" she chides without making eye contact. He sighs. "Yeah well I was doing the accounts. And they're not looking great." She raises her head. "Yeah and who's-" she stops herself, as they share a charged glance. "Who's gonna put that right?" she pretends to have meant to have said. "You know who" he insists. "What's all this about?" "You know what, Phil!" she replies quickly. "You said she wanted to be a silent partner. Now apparently she wants an equal stake in the business. Bit of a leap isn't it?" He turns away. "Yeah well... that's just how she is isn't it? This place means something to her, too. And it's not like she's a total stranger. We know who we're dealing with." Maxine nods. "Yeah, that's what worries me! Look... I need to think about it. Now are you helping me set this place up or not?" Not wanting to press her, Phil silently retreats...
Back at the Archers, Saffron is now up and about, sulking silently as she scrolls through her phone before being joined by grandmother Helen. "Oh! Where did you spring from, sweetheart?" Saffron ignores her, before Helen joins her on the sofa. "You know, doomscrolling isn't gonna make things any better." Saffron frowns and stares at Helen in surprise. "How do you know that word?" Saffron wonders innocently. Helen smirks. "I'm a detective, remember? It's my job to know everything! And it's nice to hear my granddaughter's voice again. Been too quiet round here." Saffron sighs. "I just wish things could be different, Nan." Helen asks what she means. Saffron physically softens. "I thought Mum was gonna stay with Mariusz forever." Helen bows her head. "I never really knew Mariusz that well. What's he like?" she asks. "He was nice. Sometimes." Helen frowns. "Sometimes?" "He was a bit strict. And sometimes... he could be moody. But he looked after us. He taught me some Polish. I don't understand why Mum left him and she won't tell me. She still thinks I'm a little kid." Helen ponders. "I suppose she's just trying to protect you. That's what mums do." Saffron tilts her head. "I just wanna know what happened." Helen nods. "Me too, love. Me too." Saffron then nestles affectionately onto Helen's chest. "Oh... I have missed you, Saffron" declares Helen, as they share a cuddle...
At Doyle's café, friends Liam, Danielle and Reuben Archer are chatting about Danielle's birthday. "Happy birthday and that" Reuben offers. "Yeah, thanks Reuben. Have you got me a present?" He looks surprised. "Don't worry, I'm only joking! But I'm having a party tonight and if you wanna come, you'll have to bring a present!" Reuben laughs awkwardly. "Yeah, I will. And er... maybe something a bit more exciting?" Liam's face sinks. "Nah mate. Lisa and Glen are puttin' a lot of faith in us yeah? No pills." Reuben scoffs. "I ain't talkin' about pills, you spanner! I'm talkin' about booze." Danielle grimaces. "Oh... Sounds kinda fun but I dunno. What if something happens?" Reuben frowns. "Like what? So what if someone's sick in the garden or something. They'll get over it! Oh come on, Dan. You don't turn 16 every day." She looks at Liam, who seems swayed by Reuben. "Okay, okay. But any troublemakers get kicked out. And no randoms!" Reuben holds his hands up. "I promise no randoms. Only people we know, or vaguely know. So is that a yes?"
Danielle smirks approvingly, before the trio are joined by waitress Caitlin Cookson. "Hi guys, what can I get you today?" Liam recoils as he stares at her. "Is... something wrong?" she asks. Liam reassures her. "No no, it's just... you can't be much older than us and you're working here already?" Caitlin shrugs. "Yeah well, I guess I'm just the independent type. I need the money cos I want my own place. To rent obviously, not to buy!" Liam and Caitlin share a little giggle at this. "So you new here, babe? Haven't seen you before" Liam chatters. "Yeah kind of. I started a couple of weeks on probation. Me and Liz (Doyle, the proprietor) seem to get on okay so hopefully it'll be permanent." Liam smiles. "Yeah. Hopefully" he flirts. "Yeah cool so er... three milkshakes?" suggests Liam, and everyone agrees. "Strawberry for me, thanks" Danielle orders, before Liam takes over. "Yeah, Reuben likes banana and er... I'm a chocolate man. You like chocolate, Caitlin?" he flirts again, this time Caitlin picking up on it. "Sometimes. Prefer to share it though" she flirts back. "Right I'll er... I'll get those milkshakes going then. Nice to meet you guys." And with that, Caitlin heads back to the counter. "Wow, you've got it bad!" quips Reuben. "Hey, can I help it if I'm irresistible!" jokes Liam. "Hey Dan, she's pretty isn't she?" Danielle suddenly sours. "Yeah. I guess so." Liam is confused by her spikiness but decides not follow up on it, as Danielle softly sulks...
Lisa is with psychologist Hinda Hussain at her appointment, which is taking place at Leicester St. Mary's Hospital. "I am a bit concerned about these anxiety dreams, Lisa" Hinda concedes. "You say you've had bad dreams about this appointment?" Lisa scoffs. "I'm not crazy." Hinda smiles kindly. "I don't think you're crazy. How do you feel about your own mental health?" Lisa shrugs. "Okay. I haven't got much energy lately and I'm a bit moody but apart from that... Well, I say apart from that. I'm late." Hinda frowns. "Late? You mean for your period?" After a pause, Lisa nods. "Well this could mean a number of things. Including pregnancy." Lisa scoffs. "Hinda, I'm not pregnant. These... anxiety dreams are some kind of PTSD aren't they?" Hinda nods. "Yes. But there could also be hormonal factors. Such as pregnancy." "Mm-hm. Or perimenopause. I mean think about it. I'm getting hot flushes, my moods are all over the place and I'm tired. I'm over 40. Sounds menopausal to me."
Hinda braces herself. "Okay, Lisa. I'm not here to tell you how to live your life, I just want to help you help yourself onto the right path to a better place. And I know you want that too, and that's why you're here?" "Yes" agrees Lisa, after a pause. "Are you taking all of your medication?" Lisa sighs. "Sometimes I miss a few." "Okay. If you want my advice, then my advice is this. Firstly, please take all of your medication as prescribed. And secondly, please buy a pregnancy test. Some of your symptoms do sound menopausal and if they are, a negative pregnancy test will help confirm that. In which case it would be best to book an appointment with your GP. But medicine is as much about ruling things out as ruling them in. Does that sound reasonable?" Lisa nods, but looks troubled...
In the flat above the pub, Maxine is scrolling on her phone over a coffee in the kitchen, when Phil joins her from the bar downstairs. "Max? It's pretty busy down there, you know." Maxine says she will be down in a minute. "Right. And what about the business partner?" Maxine sighs. "I told you, Phil. I need time to think." "Well, we haven't got time!" he snaps, as she finally makes eye contact with him. "Have you seen the accounts yet?" Maxine puts her phone down. "Yes. They're not terrible but... it's not great either is it?" He nods. "Exactly. And that's why we need a business partner in the first place." Maxine frowns. "But does it have to be her? I mean one minute she wants to be a silent partner and now she wants an equal share? She'll want to put her own stamp on the place."
Phil pauses. "Yeah, you're right. Wouldn't you if you became a business partner? Look... the difference between her and a complete stranger is... she knows this place, Maxine. She knows us. And she knows pubs inside out. She's told me that she does have her own ideas but she doesn't wanna change the spirit of the place. And if she tries to, we're the majority aren't we? I know we're only in this situation because of my gambling. And I'm sorrier about that than you'll ever know but... I want to make it up to you. And this is the only way I can. And it's the only way we can hold on to this place." Maxine approaches him, and they share a kiss. "Okay Phil. Tell her it's a deal." Phil breaks out into a smile and the two share a hug - but behind his back, she seems uncertain...
At the Archers, Keeley returns home. "Hello?" she exclaims as she heads for the living room. "Hi Mum" replies daughter Saffron, who has been giving her the silent treatment until now. "Hey, Saff. Where's Mum?" "In the bath. I'm just on the iPad watching stuff." Keeley nods before joining her on the sofa. "Okay. Gimme that for a second" she asks, Saffron removing her ear buds as Keeley puts the iPad to one side. "Talk to me. I really hate it when we fight. You're my best friend." A smiley glow comes over Saffron. "I just want you to tell me the truth, Mum. You don't have to protect me cos I'm not a kid." Keeley stifles a little laugh. "You're so clever. And I'm so proud of you. And you're right. You are mature enough to hear the truth." Saffron frowns. "Did you cheat on him? Or did he cheat on you?" Keeley shakes her head. "It's nothing like that, Saff. Mariusz was... too controlling. Always wanting to know where I was, what I was doing, when I'd be home, when I was... scoffin' Jaffa Cakes! It was just getting too much." Saffron furrows her brow. "He did that to me too, Mum. Is it cos he loves us?" "No babe. That's not love. Come here." And with that, the two share a sad hug...
Liam and Reuben have been playing basketball in Linford Park, with Danielle sat on a bench nearby. "When did you get so good at shooting hoops, man?" quips Liam, as Reuben just scored the last net. "Hey, don't get bitter get better!" Liam scoffs. "Well I'm still a better runner than you bruv." "Yeah for now!" jokes Reuben. "So what time's this party then?" he asks, as Liam glances at Danielle. "Er, 7. Careful who you tell though, yeah?" "Yeah yeah. Look I've gotta go. See you tonight." And with that, Reuben heads off as Liam joins Danielle. "Yo, Dan. Fancy a bit of basketball?" "Not really in the mood to be honest" she moans, as he sits beside her. "Okay. But you are in A mood, yeah? Come on Dan, it's your 16th birthday! Supposed to be fun? You've been acting weird since we were in Doyle's earlier." "I am not acting weird!" she snaps, only confirming what Liam suggested. "Can we talk about something else?" Liam grimaces. "Look... have I done something to upset you? Cos whatever it is I'm sorry yeah? The last day I'd wanna upset you is today." She sits up. "Were you just... flirting with that Caitlin girl or... or are you into her?" Liam thinks carefully. "Well, if I was into Caitlin... would that be a problem?" She glances at him and shrugs. Suddenly, he realises what she is trying to say. "I mean... she's pretty and cool and all that but... she's no Danielle Parfitt." This makes her smile...
AND, at home, Glen is looking smart as he fixes his tie in the mirror, when Lisa returns home. "Hey" he greets. "Hey" she replies back. "You look amazing!" He smiles. "Yeah well... I don't get to treat my beautiful wife to a date that often so... might as well make the most of it." She recoils. "What exactly are we doing?" "We... are going to a fancy restaurant with a poncey name that's too expensive. And then... we've got front row seats to see your favourite musical at The Curve", he reveals, referring to the Curve Theatre in Leicester. Lisa gasps. "Not Les Mis?!" Glen smirks smugly. "Hmm, maybe!" As they embrace, they share a kiss. "I am so lucky to have you, Glen Wright." "Well not as lucky as me" he reciprocates affectionately."How was your day?"
She nods. "Yeah I er... went to see Hinda. It was... good. We had a good chat. And... I bought a new dress for tonight! Bit expensive though." Glen smiles. "Hey! Everyone deserves a treat now and again. Are you gonna get ready or...?" She smiles. "Yeah of course, I just... I wouldn't mind a coffee first. You want one?" He nods. "Yeah sure. We've got a little while yet. Actually I might just nip to the loo while you're doing that." "Okay" she agrees, as he disappears upstairs. "Right, where's my purse?" she mutters to herself, unable to find it in her coat. "Purse... Ah." She then realises it is in her handbag, which she left on the sofa. She takes the handbag into the kitchen and places it on a counter before fumbling through it. She takes out some medication, her purse... and a pregnancy test she bought earlier. Anxiously, she taps the box against her hand as she ponders when she will get an opportunity to even take the test...

On a new day, it's early morning at Doyle's café in Newben. Proprietor Liz Doyle finishes serving a customer, before she is joined by teenage waitress Caitlin Cookson. "Liz, can I ask you something?" "Course you can darling. Everything okay?" Liz checks. Caitlin smiles. "Yeah course, it's just... it's about Liam Hardacre. You know who that is?" Liz smirks furtively. "Yes...! What about him?" "Well... I don't suppose you know if he's single or not? You seem like the kind of person who'd know something like that." "Are you suggesting I'm nosy, Caitlin? Because you'd be right! As far as I know Liam isn't seeing anyone at the moment. Or at least I certainly haven't seen anyone hanging off his arm lately. You keen on him?" Caitlin shrinks. "Well... he seems cute but I'm not very good at asking people out, really." Liz wipes the counter down. "Well, I know teenage boys can be a bit funny about that sort of thing. But I also know Liam isn't one of them. He's a nice lad, Caitlin. And if he feels the same way about you then I'm sure he'd at least give you a date. That is if teenagers still go on dates these days! Honestly, just ask him out. What's the worst that could happen?" Caitlin seems reassured by this. "Thanks Liz. I better go and clean some tables."
As they have chatted, self-employed web designer Jerome Wyatt just popped in with his teenage son Declan. "Morning Liz" greets Jerome. "Can I get a medium latte to go please and... what you havin', mate?" he asks Declan. "Oh, just a mango smoothie for me thanks. Medium." Liz asks if that's everything, and they agree before she heads down the counter and leaves them to it. "Dad, you know I wanna be the new team captain for the Leicester Lions, right?" "Yeah?" "So why did you leave as manager, I mean... why now?" Jerome sighs. "Well, that is partly why I left" explains Jerome. "We both know you're the best choice but choosing my own son as captain might look a bit... y'know? Anyway I've got a lot of jobs on nowadays, I just don't have time to commit to the club anymore." Declan nods. "Yeah well Gavin Archer's taken over for now. Do you think he'll choose Reuben over me? I mean just because you wouldn't doesn't mean he won't."
But before Jerome has a chance to reply, Liam Hardacre pops in to the eatery. "Hey, Declan. Thought I seen you heading in here." Declan smiles. "Alright Liam?" "Yeah, sweet man, sweet. Listen, you know Danielle's 16th birthday is today right? You still up for the party tonight? It's at our place." Declan nods. "Yeah yeah, course. I mean, if it's okay with my dad." Jerome nods. "Course it is. But not too late yeah? I'll come and pick you up about 11ish." Declan groans. "Dad! It's a 16th birthday and it's the weekend! Can't we say midnight? Please?" Jerome tuts. "Okay, okay!" Liam grins. "Nice one, lads. See you later, yeah?" And with that, Liam heads off again, as Caitlin glances furtively in his direction...
In Linford Park, Vanessa Warren - the deputy CEO at Leicester St. Mary's Hospital - anxiously scrolls through her phone emails on a bench, looking pensive. As she sighs to herself, she is joined by Gavin Archer, who works for the local health board. "Morning, Vanessa. Vanessa?" he repeats, as she did not respond to him initially. "Gavin!" she exclaims. "Sorry, I was miles away." "Maybe this'll help" he suggests, handing her a coffee he just bought her. "Thank you. I hope it's strong!" she jokes, deadpan. He smiles sympathetically. "Can I ask why you wanted to meet me here instead of the hospital?" She looks downcast. "I suppose it would feel like rubbing Martin's face in it. He has no idea what's coming, does he?" Gavin nods. "I've read your email. It's pretty explosive stuff." She sips. "I must admit I had to pace around a bit before I pressed send" she concedes. "I hope I've done the right thing." "Well, I suppose you're just the messenger" he offers. "The real question is how did it get to this stage in the first place?"
She sighs. "It's complicated. I've had staff telling me that... Martin's always unavailable or just doesn't seem that interested in things. He promises things and then forgets about them, decisions keep getting put on ice. It's more than not being on the ball, Gavin. And I'm the deputy so I'm the one who gets it in the neck." Gavin nods. "That can't be easy." "It's not just that. I've had surgeons and charge nurses telling me there might be strike action if things don't improve." Gavin frowns. "Why did nobody just tell him?" "You can't just tell the CEO he's not up to his own job! He's been in charge for so long, and before this year everyone respected him, me included. The supercomplaint was my idea, I thought it might avoid a scandal." Gavin nods. "Do you want his job?" he asks, rather cynically. Vanessa arches an eyebrow. "I want what's best for the hospital." "Good answer" he smirks lightly. "Alright look. Martin's been made aware I'm coming to see him today but I haven't set an appointment. Why don't you finish at 4 and I'll cover for you if he notices? And If it's any consolation, I'm not looking forward to this either." Vanessa smiles sadly...
At The Moonshine Inn, nurse Rosy Lyons is sipping on a drink at the bar alone, when she is tapped on the shoulder. "Oh my god, Keeley!" gasps Rosy, as the two old friends share a hug. "What are you doing here, let me buy you a drink." Keeley smiles sadly. "Thanks Rosy. Think I need one after my little trip to the job centre this morning." Rosy frowns. "Oh no, were they a bit rough on you?" Keeley shrugs. "No, not really. Just a lot of questions I guess, and more to do online. Are you not working?" Rosy shakes her head. "No no, it's my day off today. Hang on... if you've been down the job centre then you must be back in Leicester for good?"
But before Keeley can answer, the duo are interuppted by landlady Maxine Donnelly. "Oh hello Keeley, didn't know you were back in town" she chatters. Have you moved back here with your Saffron and Mariusz?" Keeley forces a smile. "No just... me and Saffron. I split up with Mariusz." Maxine says she is sorry to hear that. "Oh well, plenty more fish and all that!" Maxine exclaims, trying to soften the blow. "Don't suppose I could have my old barmaid job back, could I?" asks Keeley. Maxine winces. "I'm sorry sweetheart, money's a bit tight at the moment. But you know you're a great barmaid so I'm sure you'll find something soon enough. Just not at the Silver Horse okay?" jokes Maxine, referring to a local rival pub. "Can I get a vodka orange for Keeley please, Maxine?" Rosy orders. "Course, won't be a minute." As Maxine disappears down the bar, Rosy returns her attention to Keeley. "Sounds like my best mate's really been through the mill lately?" Keeley gazes at her sadly. "Come here" offers Rosy, embracing Keeley for a cuddle...
At the Wrights, Liam is busy setting up for Danielle's party, when Danielle Parfitt herself comes downstairs, looking glamorous having dressed up for the occasion. "Wow you look... incredible" Liam compliments. "Thank you" she replies bashfully. "Was that Lisa and Glen just now?" she asks, referring to their adoptive parents. "Yeah yeah, they just left. And they've had a change of plan. They've booked a hotel last minute so they won't be back till the morning now." Danielle nods. "Right. So it's just us then?" she flirts. Liam approaches her. "Yeah. Just us. For now, at least." The two then share some kisses, but she soon notices he seems less enthusiastic about them than she is. "What's wrong? Liam?" He pauses briefly. "The thing is, Dan... we've been here before ain't we?" She shrugs with a smile. "So we're here again! Is that a problem?"
Liam shrinks. "Look... you don't need me to tell you how hot you are but... the timing's a bit weird for me." She frowns. "What do you mean? Is this about that waitress Caitlin?" "Yeah. I think I like her to be honest. I wanna ask her out and... I think she'll say yes." Danielle nods. "Okay. And what if it sucks?" Liam titters. "Then at least we'll know." She sighs. "Look, Liam. This doesn't have to be anything heavy, it's not like we're getting married! But you know... our relationship is special. And I wanna feel special on my 16th birthday." Liam softens. "You really do look incredible, babe." "I know" she teases, before they share another kiss. "So what time's the party?" she asks. "Six", he replies, as she glances at her watch. "Oh, that long? I mean things look pretty ready down here." Liam nods. "Yeah almost. Just got a few more things to sort out." She takes him by the hand. "Liam? Why don't you come upstairs and sort me out first" she flirts, gazing into his eyes. "You ain't taking no for an answer, are you?" he titters. "Nope!" she beams, as she leads him by the hand up the staircase...
At Leicester St. Mary's, CEO Martin Rogers has just let Gavin into his office. "Take a seat, Gavin" offers Martin. "Sorry, my PA usually sends visitors in." Gavin smiles awkwardly. "Yes I er... told her to take a break. The more confidential this is the better, really." Martin looks concerned by this remark. "Right..." "Look I'll get straight to the point, Martin. The trust has received a tip-off about your conduct on duty... The person who contacted us works at the hospital and is effectively acting as a spokesperson for... a supercomplaint." Martin is stunned. "A supercomplaint? In relation to what?" "Irregularities in your handling of various situations? The complainant feels patient care is being compromised. If the allegations are true of course." Martin frowns. "Well they're not! Look this is a stressful job I admit that. But that's no secret. Perhaps I've not been at my best this year but... well, this is taking it a bit far isn't it? This complainant could be anyone for a start. Some troublemaker who doesn't even work here for all we know." Gavin nods. "If I'm aware of the complainant's identity or identities, I couldn't say who it was. But it's protocol to look into any complaint the trust receives, Martin, you know that." Martin leans forward. "Look into? Gavin... this is starting to sound like some sort of inquiry." Gavin bows his head. "I'm afraid it is. Look, I'm sorry Martin but an investigation into this complaint will have to be carried out by the trust. And until it's concluded - pending its outcome - I'm afraid you're being suspended with immediate effect." Martin is crestfallen...
Still at the hospital, Martin is trying to get his head around what has just happened. "Alright Gavin, I'll level with you" Martin begins, stood up with his back turned to Gavin at this point. "This has been the hardest year of my life. Breaking up with my wife, sending one of my sons away. It's all just become a bit too much but... I didn't think things were as bad as you're making out." He turns to face Gavin. "Not that you've really told me much. You must be aware of the specifics?" Gavin sighs. "Yes. On the record Martin, you know I can't say anything. It'll all come out in the final report of the investigation. Off the record... several people have complained about you. One of them is acting as a sort of mediator and that's who emailed us. I can't tell you who that is or who the complainants are, so please don't ask."
Martin sinks into his chair. "What am I gonna tell Steve? Or Bailie? They'll be so ashamed of me." Gavin leans in. "Look... they don't have to know at this stage. You could just tell them you've decided to take early retirement, but you didn't say anything because you didn't want a fuss." Martin frowns. "What if this makes the press?" "We'll try our best to keep it out of the media but you know I can't promise anything. And even if it does, that wouldn't happen until the investigation has ended. Realistically that'll be well into the new year because we've got a backlog. This'll give you time to come to terms with things before you tell your family. As it's confidential, they won't hear anything from me. Look mate... this is the hardest thing I've ever had to do, and I hope it won't damage our friendship. But you have more to be proud of than ashamed of in all the years you've run this hospital. In time, maybe that will be some comfort to you."
Keeley and Rosy are now at the Archer family home, where the former has invited the latter back for coffee, which they are both supping on as they chat. "So you and Mariusz then" begins Rosy. "You just got out of there?" Keeley finishes a sip. "Well the truth is... I did try to break up with him a few times but... he just wasn't getting the message, Rosy. I had no choice but to take Saffron with me and just come back here." Rosy nods. "And how's Saffron dealing with all this?" "Well, she's a bit out of sorts to be honest but... I think she's okay. She did give me the silent treatment at first but thanks to Mum that didn't last long. Mum's pretending not to be all judgy about the whole thing but... you can tell she's suppressing it, she can't help herself!" Rosy laughs a little. "She just cares about you, babe. We all do." Keeley smiles at this.
"Anyway, it's not all doom and gloom" insists Keeley. Before I went to the job centre I had a chat with Pam Patel at Linford High. Some Year 7's dropped out at the last minute so they can squeeze Saff in as a new student." "Oh well, there's a rainbow" agrees Rosy. "Yeah. Anyway, enough about my car crash personal life! How's Rosy?" Rosy nods coyly. "Yeah I... I guess things are pretty good at the moment." "Have you got over Lee Rogers yet?" Keeley asks bluntly, referring to Rosy's last boyfriend. "Lee who?" jokes Rosy. "Honestly, I am well and truly over him. Rosy Lyons... has moved on." Keeley frowns. "Moved on? You mean... you've met someone else?" "Now, I didn't say that!" insists Rosy. Keeley beams. "I'm right though, aren't I?" After a brief pause, Rosy groans in mock frustration. "Why do you have to know me so well?! Okay there's someone new." "Ooh!" exclaims Keeley. "Anyone I know?" "I can't really talk about it" Rosy grimaces. "Oh. Why?" wonders Keeley. "Cos it's kind of awkward..."
Danielle's party is in full swing back at the Wrights, as "Yes, And" by Ariana Grande plays in the background. Liam is in the kitchen, when Danielle joins him. "Hey. Thanks for all your help with the party, Liam. And for, you know... earlier. It was amazing."Yeah, yeah it was" he agrees flatly, his lack of enthusiasm not unnoticed by Danielle. "Hey... are you okay?" she wonders aloud, as guest Reuben Archer answers a knock at the door. "What? Yeah yeah yeah, just... got stuff on my mind that's all" Liam rambles. "Okay. Like what?" wonders Danielle. "Caitlin!" he exclaims. "Liam, I thought we'd been through all this" she complains. "Hey guys. Looking good" greets a new guest - Caitlin herself, Danielle realising why Liam said her name. "Hey... Caitlin!" blurts out a blindsided Danielle. "Hey. Happy birthday" Caitlin wishes her. "Thank you. Erm... who invited you, just out of interest?" "Guilty!" jokes Reuben. "Well actually, Declan told me and I told her. "Also guilty!" quips Declan, who is sat near Reuben. "The more the merrier, right?" Danielle forces a laugh. "Absolutely." Liam then offers to take Caitlin's jacket, as Danielle darts a glare at Reuben, who looks smug as he turns away. Danielle then receives a text from Glen:
Danielle sighs to herself. Back in the living room, Declan is drinking from a bottle Reuben just gave him. "Oh mate, what is this stuff!" Declan exclaims. "Let's just say I got it from someone who knows someone. Drink up, it's good stuff! insists Reuben loudly. "Maybe you've had enough already mate" Declan advises. Reuben frowns. "What you on about? This is only my second bottle. And it won't be the last!" Declan chuckles. "I can't see you going on one of your runs tomorrow." Reuben sobers. "Eh? How do you know about that?" Declan says Liam mentioned it. "Did he" snaps Reuben angrily before taking another swig, leaving Declan perplexed.
Danielle then re-emerges from the kitchen. "Hey guys? Could one of you go upstairs for me please, I just saw some randoms go up there and I don't want them up there." "I'll go" replies Reuben quickly, before disappearing just as quick, leaving Danielle curious. "Is he okay?" she asks Declan, who just shrugs. "Hey, have you seen Liam or Caitlin?" Declan shakes his head, as Danielle gazes round the room looking concerned...
At Warren family household, husband and father Rob stand up to greet wife Vanessa, who has been AWOL for much of the evening. "Hello?" she calls out. "Ness? Where have you been all night?" She sighs. "I'm sorry, Rob. Hug?" Noticing she looks exhausted, he cuddles her close. "Is everything okay? I've been worried about you", he explains. "I did text you" she reminds him. "Yeah, but you didn't say much." "Where are the kids?" He tells her they're all in bed upstairs. "Theoretically!" he jokes. "But right now we're talking about you." She walks into the living room and sighs heavily, her back to Rob. "It's about Martin. Rogers. He's been suspended from the hospital and... realistically... he's not coming back." Rob scoffs bemusedly. "So what the hell happened?" Vanessa turns to face him, albeit looking sheepish. "Well, the party line is he's taking early retirement. But in reality, there's been a supercomplaint against him and he's been suspended pending further investigation." Rob reclines. "Wow. Hasn't he run the hospital forever? What's all this about?" She inverts a pout. "I can't tell you that." He titters. "Tell me anyway."
AND, back at the party, Liam and Caitlin kiss alone in the back garden, but he eventually stops this. "No, Caitlin. I can't, I'm sorry." She frowns. "Why? Have I done something wrong?" "Look, you're a nice girl, yeah? And you're really pretty and that, it's just... I can't hurt you like this." She asks what he means. "Are you into someone else?" she asks. He sighs. "Something happened earlier. Before the party, I slept with... Danielle. Look, I wasn't that into it Cait I just... I just sort of went with it. But I really don't wanna upset you yeah?" Caitlin looks frozen, and pauses before she considers how to respond. "I'm not upset" she says, somewhat shakily. "Just surprised. Isn't she... kinda like your sister, though?" Liam scoffs. "No. Me and Danielle ain't related in any way we just... we just live under the same roof. Please don't say anything to her okay? Don't do it for me, do it for her." Caitlin smiles and clutches his arms. "Liam, calm down. We haven't even been on a date yet and you're acting like you've cheated on me or something." He scoffs. "Feel like I have. Because the truth is, between you and me, I didn't wanna be with Danielle. I wanted you." Caitlin softens further. "So... you're not into her?" He shakes his head. "I just wanted her to feel special on her birthday. What an idiot." "I think you just care. Maybe too much. That's the kind of guy you are, I guess." He scoffs in amazment. "You are one helluva girl, you know that?" She smiles warmly. "Come on. It's getting a bit chilly out here."
Back inside, a now tipsy Reuben is back talking to Declan again. "You know you've blown it, right Dec? Your chances of being team captain. Your dad being the manager was your best chance and now he's quit on ya." Declan looks sullen. "Okay, now you're just being a dick, Reuben. Probably cos you've drunk too much." "No no, seriously" Reuben rambles. "I'm sucking up to my dad like you wouldn't believe right now cos he's gonna pick me. And when he does, you're gonna see what a real captain looks like Declan, trust me mate!" Declan sees red at this and grabs Reuben by his shirt. "Listen mate, you are seriously getting on my nerves now." Reuben responds in kind as the mood between them descends into a tussle. "Yeah well, the feeling's mutual, pretty boy!" Reuben barbs. "What the hell are you talking about, you rocket!" exclaims Declan. Reuben seethes. "YOU! You think you've got it in the bag with this captaincy thing, don't ya? Reckon you're better than me don't ya, you smug little git!" Reuben scoffs. "Yeah, cos you're really proving everyone wrong right now, aren't ya mate!" This prompts the sour mood between Declan and Reuben to descend into a full-blown fight, which Liam is forced to step into and break up, but with little success.
Things change however when Declan's dad Jerome suddenly turns up and steps in between them. "Oi oi oi, that's enough out of you two. That is enough! Now someone better start talking here, what the hell is going on?" Nobody replies, as Jerome sniffs one of the empty bottles on the living room table. "Why is there booze at this party? Everyone here is under 18, I take it?" Danielle looks mortified. "Jerome, I am SO sorry about all this." "Yeah well sorry isn't good enough, Danielle. I trusted you guys and now look. Just wait till Lisa and Glen hear about this." Both Liam and Danielle shrink in embarrassment. "And as for you two, I'm taking both of you home. Declan you're in front with me, Reuben you're in the back. Now move." Once Jerome, Declan and Reuben have left, Danielle rolls her eyes. "How did I let you and Reuben talk me into having booze for this?" she asks rhetorically. "I know and I'm sorry Dan-" "Save it, Liam. Party's over!" declares Danielle loudly. And with that she heads upstairs, as an exasperated Liam glances at Caitlin snoozing on the sofa, rubs his nose and shuts his eyes at the disaster that has been this night...

19:00-19:30 | 6th September 2024 (Friday)
At 06:30 on a new morning, Martin Rogers is already up. He is sipping solemnly on a coffee, reflecting on the dramatic day before when he was suspended as CEO of Leicester St. Mary's Hospital, following a supercomplaint which will likely end his tenure there after decades in charge. As he sups his beverage and clings on to his cup, almost for dear life, he is joined by eldest son Steve, who turns on the light. "Dad? Thought I heard someone knocking about." Martin sighs. "Do we have to have that on? Just open the curtains." Slightly blindsided by Martin's shortness, Steve duly turns off the light and opens the curtains. "Bad night?" asks Steve, in attempt at getting Martin to communicate. "Something like that" replies Martin unhelpfully. "You know I'm usually up at 7 anyway but I was restless so... here I am. What?" Steve frowns. "No nothing, it's just... you seem a bit out of sorts. Hardly said a word when you got home last night." Martin sighs. "Sorry Steve. I'm not having a great week to be honest. Alright, what's that look for?"
"I'm worried about you, Dad. I have been for a while." This strikes a chord with Martin. "Really? Why's that?" Steve feels Martin is vulnerable, and does not want to be too heavy with him this early in the day. "Dunno" he cops out. "But just... if you wanna talk about anything, whatever it is... just let me know, okay?" Martin bows his head. "You know what I really want right now? Slice of toast. Meant to make one with my coffee and forgot!" he jokes, trying to lighten the mood. Steve smirks. "Shall I really go to town and get the marmalade out?" Martin chuckles. "Now you're talking!" "So you're okay, yeah?" "I'm fine, Steve" replies Martin, a little too slowly. "Go on, get that toaster going." And with that, Steve gets up - but gives Martin a worried glance as he heads into the kitchen...
Over at the Wrights, Danielle Parfitt is clearing up after the night before, when she is joined by Liam Hardacre from upstairs. "Hey" he greets. "Can we talk about last night?" She sighs. "What is there to say, Liam? It was an absolute disaster and when Lisa and Glen find out about the... booze and the fight, they're never gonna trust me again." "Neither of those things was your fault, Dan. Sometimes stuff just happens and you can't control it. Jerome was probably just sounding off last night to freak you out." "Yeah, well it worked! Didn't sleep much." Liam smiles. "If he was really gonna tell them, Glen and Lisa would probably be back here already giving us the hairdryer treatment! But they're not, are they?" Danielle pouts. "Maybe." "Hey, is that Caitlin on the sofa?" Liam wonders, referring to waitress Caitlin Cookson. "Yeah" confirms Danielle. "She's dead to the world though. I've been down here ten minutes and she hasn't moved an inch."
But before they can pursue this any further, Glen Wright and wife Lisa themselves return home from their night away, and the four all greet each other accordingly. "Good night?" asks Liam. "Oh it was wonderful" Lisa enthuses. "I honestly can't remember the last time I had so much fun. And it's all thanks to this one" she praises Glen. "Hey! Who said it was over?" he flirts, as they share a kiss. "Ew please guys, we've not even had breakfast yet" Danielle jokes. "It did get a bit hairy at Les Mis though" Glen chatters. "Security almost had to chuck us out cos Lisa was singing along too loudly!" Lisa mock gasps. "That did not happen!" she jokes. "So what about your party, Danielle? Any problems?" Danielle glances at Liam. "Erm... no not really! Well, a couple of people... had a bit of an argument but er... Liam sorted that out and then everything was fine."
Glen nods, impressed. "Sweet. So... who's this girl on the sofa then?" Liam smiles faintly. "Oh that's Caitlin. She's a waitress at Doyle's, she only started a couple of weeks ago." Lisa glances at her. "Actually now you mention it, I think I have seen her about. Are you friends?" "Yeah, something like that" he replies sheepishly. "She seemed a bit drowsy last night so we thought we'd just leave her be" Danielle interjects. "Fair enough" Glen responds. "But someone's probably wondering where she is so it's probably time she was getting home. Come on hun. Caitlin? Time to wake up now." But despite being persistent, he cannot get much response and she only mumbles a little, which concerns Glen. "Did she have any alcohol last night?" "Alcohol?" exclaims Liam, a little too enthusiastically. "No no it was a totally dry party. Why?" Glen feels Caitlin's head and pulse. "I can't wake her up, Lisa. I think we better call an ambulance" he advises, as he continues in vain to rouse her...
At the Warren abode, Vanessa is desperately searching for her security pass in her handbag, muttering in frustration to herself, when she is joined by husband Rob. "Looking for this by any chance?" he suggests. "Where did you find it?" He smiles. "You left it in the bedroom. What's the hurry anyway?" Vanessa sighs. "I've just got off the phone to Gavin Archer. You are now looking at the new acting CEO of Leicester St. Mary's Hospital!" "Well well!" he praises, sharing a kiss with her. "Long overdue if you ask me." Vanessa asks where the kids are. "All at school. Apart from the ones I have to drive there in a minute" he quips. "Don't worry about today, Ness. You'll be fine." She frowns. "I hope so. Can't help but feel bad for Martin though. His life is ruined." Rob's eyes widen. "Well that's not the hospital's fault is it? You said yourself all the staff have been complaining about him lately. Maybe he's just past it." She recoils. "Rob!" "What?! He knows it as well. That's why he jumped before he was pushed, right? And you finally get what you want." She asks what he means. "Oh come on, Vanessa. You've wanted that job since day one. Yours for the taking now surely?" She twists her lips contemplatively. "Not necessarily. Plenty of other candidates could bag it. They might go for someone with... medical experience over managerial experience. Or they might decide the place needs a completely new person to take the reigns and... shake things up a bit." He sighs. "You are gonna apply though?" "Of course. And I'm gonna have to blow them away if I want this job." He smirks. "So you DO want it then?" She cannot help but smirk in return. "Bye Rob!"
Meanwhile at the Wyatts, Declan has made two cups of tea in the kitchen, when he is joined by dad Jerome from upstairs. "Dad? I made you one as well." Jerome is cool. "Ta" he replies, taking a sip as an awkward silence briefly ensues. Declan gathers himself. "Look Dad... I'm sorry about last night okay? It all just got a bit out of hand, that's all." Jerome sighs. "What did though? You still haven't told me. You and Reuben weren't exactly chatty last night." Declan sighs. "Okay. You really wanna know? I'll tell you. But only if you promise not to say anything bad happened at the party to Glen and Lisa." Jerome puts his cup down on the counter. "Now, hang on a minute-" "I'm serious, Dad! If Liam and Danielle end up in hot water over all this, Reuben's gonna get the blame and then why would they still wanna be friends with him? And then I'll get it in the neck from Reuben as well. All teenagers drink a bit sometimes, especially at a party. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but... it just happens."
Jerome sighs in defeat. "Okay, okay. I won't say anything. To be honest I'm more concerned about this fight you had with Reuben. I thought you two were friends?" Declan scoffs. "More like frienemies. He's quite aggro at times but it's all one-sided, Dad. I don't have a problem with him but... he does with me." Jerome frowns. "Is this about captaining the football team again?" Declan nods. "Yeah. He's really insecure about it for some reason but... that's not my problem is it?" Jerome ponders. "No it's not. That's a mature attitude to take. All the more reason why you should be the one who plays peacemaker. Declan groans. "What?! Well why me?" "Because you're the bigger person. And a lot more mature than Reuben Archer! Right, I've got an appointment to get to." "Dad? Are we good?" Jerome smiles. "Course we are, mate. But I raised you better than to pick fights with people who just aren't worth it. Okay?" Declan nods bashfully. "Good man" Jerome praises, sharing a low five with his son. "Have a good day yeah?"
Over at Leicester St. Mary's, patient Caitlin stirs as Danielle, Liam and Lisa sit around her. "Caitlin? It's Liam" assures Liam. "Are you okay?" "Mm... not sure" she replies groggily. "Tired. Where am I?" "You're in hospital babe but you're okay. You just need to rest for a bit yeah?" Lisa frowns. "What do you think happened to her, Liam? And don't lie to me! You're lucky I managed to persuade Glen to go to work instead of coming with us." Danielle grimaces. "We really are sorry about all this, Lisa. We know we've let you down but... there was booze at the party and... we knew about it." Lisa sighs in exasperation. "Right. How did you get hold of that?" Liam senses Danielle's facial panic, and jumps in. "Er, someone brought it with them and it got passed around. We don't know who it was though, we just heard someone mention... the booze."
But before Lisa can probe them any further, nurse Rosy Lyons joins them for an update on Caitlin. "Morning guys. Is Caitlin awake yet?" she asks. "Yeah but... she's not really with it" Danielle admits. "Can you tell us what happened?" Rosy nods. "Well, we did some blood tests and... it looks like Caitlin's drink was spiked." "Spiked?" exclaims Danielle. "Did you know everyone who came to the party?" asks Rosy. "Sort of" Danielle mutters. Rosy smiles softly. "Well anyway, because a crime was committed we've had to inform the police. They'll wanna take statements from you guys as well as anyone else who was at the party."
Liam looks horrified. "Oh my god. Social services, what if they find out?" Rosy tilts her head. "It's unlikely they'd do much given neither you or Danielle were harmed." "Yeah but me and Glen went away for the night" reveals Lisa. "That's not a good look, is it?" Rosy smiles. "My advice would be to tell them yourself before the police do. At worst they might do a quick welfare visit and tick a few boxes." Lisa nods. "Thanks Rosy." Liam asks Rosy when Caitlin can go home. "Well she's gonna be groggy for a while, but she should be okay if one of you takes her." Danielle admits they do not know where Caitlin lives, but Liz might as Caitlin works at Doyle's. "We'll stop by Doyle's on the way home" suggests Lisa. "Why don't you go and wait in the car for me?" Danielle pouts. "Actually I'm gonna walk back. I need to clear my head a bit." And with that, Danielle skulks off.
Lisa then turns to Liam. "Liam?" He sighs. "I wanna stay with Caitlin. I kind of feel responsible for last night. Anyway where's her family? Shouldn't one of them be here?" Rosy nods. "The only family we can find on the database is her dad but... his phone's switched off. Maybe he's at work or something." Lisa frowns. "Okay. Well I'll leave you to it Liam. See you later." As Lisa leaves Liam's side, she walks with Rosy. "Rosy? Could we have a quick chat somewhere? It's not about Caitlin." Rosy smiles. "Well I'm just about to go on my break but I'm only going the canteen. We could have a chat there?" Lisa smiles in response...
In the hospital canteen, Lisa has been opening up about her recent struggles to an attentive Rosy. "So anyway" Lisa continues, mid-conversation. "My mental health has been a bit all over the place lately but you know... it's been worse." Rosy smiles. "Well, I'm no expert but... just sounds like you've had a lot on your mind rather than anything too serious." Lisa nods. "Yeah, maybe. But the counselling sessions with Hinda are helping, I think." "Oh, Hinda's amazing" Rosy praises, whilst scooping some yogurt. "She's kinda tough but always fair." "Ha! Sounds like Hinda" agrees Lisa. "She thinks my symptoms might not be perimenopause though. She thinks it might be pregnancy. I mean, I don't think it is but... Hinda insisted I try to rule it out so. I got a pregnancy test yesterday." Rosy finishes eating. "Right. Have you taken it yet?" Lisa sighs. "No. Me and Glen had a romantic night away yesterday and it was so good I never got a chance. And now we're dealing with this teenage party from hell! Anyway! Whatever the result is, Rosy... I'm scared of what happens next." Rosy smiles sympathetically. "I understand that, Lisa. But is knowing more scary than not knowing at all?" This really makes Lisa think...
Meanwhile upstairs, Vanessa is busy on her laptop, when she is interrupted by head receptionist Chandra Patel. "Come in" beckons Vanessa. "Chandra. What can I do for you?" "Afternoon, boss. Ooh, feels kinda funny saying that!" Vanessa arches an eyebrow. "I've been the deputy for years, it's not that big of a leap" she quips drily, as Chandra takes a seat. "Fair enough. Congratulations by the way." "Thank you, but it might not be forever so... don't get too excited" she insists, finishing a line in her report. "What can I do for you?" Chandra smiles. "Well I was just wondering if we could... have a bit of a chat?" Vanessa continues working. "Is this important, Chandra? Because if it's not I am up to my eyeballs." "Well, the sooner we talk the sooner you get your eyeballs back." Vanessa finally stops working and looks at Chandra. "Go on." "I couldn't help but notice a few things since last night. You know, in the hospital. And now Martin seems to have vanished and... you're in his chair?" "So?" shrugs Vanessa. "Well, Gavin Archer was here yesterday, wasn't he? Which is the hospital equivalent of the grim reaper paying a visit! And now Martin's gone. Is he not well?"
Vanessa pouts. "Martin's on leave for the time being." "Okay" replies Chandra. "Any particular reason?" "Yes" Vanessa responds, but does not elaborate any further. "Which is?" replies Chandra persistently. Vanessa sighs. "Look, I know you want the tea Chandra but I really don't have time for this. An email is going out later on today but Gavin is putting that together. In the meantime, I need to deal with an irate surgeon and an unhappy charge nurse, so if there's nothing else...?" Chandra nods. "Okay. Well, sounds like you'll be in charge for the forseeable future anyway." Vanessa sighs. "Yes I will be, until a new CEO is- Oh god..." Chandra frowns at Vanessa's accidental overshare. "New CEO? So Martin's not coming back?" Vanessa grimaces as she chooses her words more carefully. "Alright. It'll all be in the email but I'll give you a quick debrief about it - in the strictest confidence - if you promise to leave me alone and get back to work?" Chandra smiles smugly, as Vanessa braces herself...
Over at Doyle's café, Steve is enjoying a hot drink on his own, when Rob pops in and sees him, and they greet each other. "Er, Rob? Could we have a quick word about Vanessa?" Steve asks. Rob frowns as he sits opposite Steve. "What about Vanessa?" "Oh it's nothing serious" insists Steve. "It's just... I've text her a few times this week and she hasn't replied. She's not answering the phone either, is... everything okay with her? " Rob scoffs. "Er, look Steve... I know you and Vanessa have a lot of history, but she's got a lot on at the moment. And you should let me worry about that" insists Rob defensively. "I am her husband after all." Steve scoffs in embarrassment. "I think you've got the wrong end of the stick here, mate. I'm just worried about her. As a friend." Rob nods sarcastically. "Really (?)" "Look, anything me and Vanessa ever had is ancient history. Besides, I er... I'm seeing someone at the moment." Rob looks more reassured. "Oh. How's that going then?" "Yeah, pretty good so far. But we don't want anyone else to know yet. It's complicated."
Rob titters. "She's not married is she?" "Course she's not married!" Steve exclaims. "And it's not Sabrina Carpenter either! Anyway. Has Vanessa said anything to you?" Rob sighs. "Look, I really can't say anything Steve so... you didn't hear this from me. But something big is going down at the hospital and... Vanessa is dealing with it." Steve frowns. "Vanessa? Don't you mean my dad?" Rob realises he has probably overshared, and rows back. "Huh, of course!" Rob stammers. "What I mean is, Vanessa is involved as well. Not in a bad way, it's just a lot to deal with. I really can't say any more than that. But rest assured Steve, she's not ignoring you or anything. In fact, I'll tell her to give you a bell." Steve thanks him. "Right, I'm gonna get myself a drink before I press on" Rob declares. "Busy day?" asks Steve. "Yes, I'm looking for a new tenant at one of my houses." "Oh right. Rosy's place?" Steve suggests, to a surprised Rob. "Yeah. How do you know that?" Steve too has overshared. "Oh er... lucky guess" he scoffs awkwardly, before a nonplussed Rob disappears to the counter...
Liam is still at the hospital and has just returned from the coffee machine, only to be surprised to find Caitlin preparing to discharge herself. "Caitlin? Hey hey hey, take it easy" "I'm fine Liam, honestly" she insists. "I just wanna get home" He clasps her shoulders. "You are not fine. And besides, Liz is coming soon to take you home." Caitlin's usually calm demeanour is suddenly overcome by panic. "What?! Well who's idea was that, she can't come here!" "Woah! Woah. Why is that such a big deal?" She sighs. "It's not it's just... My dad's a bit funny about strangers, that's all. He kind of keeps himself to himself." Liam tries to understand. "Okay. Well, maybe Liz could just drop you off at the other end of the street or something? She doesn't have to go to the door. But at least someone's always with you. I just don't think you should be on your own right now."
Caitlin looks crestfallen. "I'm so embarrassed about last night. Who would wanna spike my drink? And why?" "Hey. If anyone should be embarrassed about last night it's me. I shouldn't've told you about sleeping with Danielle and... I should've kept an eye on you more. I ain't good enough for you Caitlin." "Isn't that up to me?" she asks. "I just... are you sure you don't wanna be with Danielle? Cos it's fine if you do. I won't say anything." He sighs. "I wanna be with YOU, and I'll... I'll put Dan in the picutre. I just don't wanna hurt anyone." She smiles warmly. "You're so honest, Liam. Come here." And with that, the two share a cuddle. But when their embrace breaks and they lock eyes, they cannot help but share a tender, passionate kiss...
AND, at the Wrights, Jerome has just called round with Glen letting him in. "Hey Jerome. Everything okay?" "Yeah yeah, it's just... Declan thinks he left his phone here last night. He's looked everywhere else" Jerome chatters, as they head into the kitchen. "Wouldn't be that one by any chance?" Glen suggests, at a phone on the counter. Jerome picks it up. "Oh thank God! I'll never hear the end of it otherwise" jokes Jerome. "Hey erm... how's Lisa?" Glen frowns. "Yeah she's fine. Why?" "No reason it's just... she seems a bit up and down lately." Glen sighs. "Yeah in some ways. I don't wanna gossip about her." "Sure. But I won't say anything to her. I mean, we're friends too right?" Glen smiles. "Let me make you a coffee, mate. I've just got in but I don't think Lisa's here so... Have a seat."
But Lisa is actually upstairs, having ignored Glen call out for her when he got home. She stares into the bathroom mirror with a hard sigh, as she finally opens the pregnancy test. "Right then. Now or never" she mutters to herself. Back downstairs, Glen opens up to Jerome. "Lisa's been having a few nightmare lately. Some about Rhys, some about Anita." Jerome frowns. "Anita? As in your ex-wife?" Glen continues. "I mean she seemed really happy on our date last night. Happiest I've seen in her ages. But is it just... some kind of front?" Jerome smiles sympathetically. "Maybe her depression's flaring up again? I mean... depression can be complicated and you know, confusing." "She is having counselling again but... it's hard to tell what impact that's having. I meant to talk to her about all this yesterday but... we were having a great time so it just never happened. Maybe I'm overthinking all this."
As Jerome replies, the visual scene switches to various camera cuts of a tower block estate elsewhere in Leicester, known as Greengate. As a result, Jerome's voice is occasionally heard but he himself is not seen. "I mean, just look at what you and Lisa have" Jerome explains. "Two happy teenagers, albeit getting up to all sorts sometimes! Nice house, loving family. And it sounds like you and Lisa are closer than ever." Inbetween this, the scene switches to a shocked Lisa staring at the pregnancy test result, and then at her reflection. "She means everything to me mate" Glen replies. I mean, I can understand her dreaming about Rhys. He is her son after all. But why Anita? We haven't seen her for nearly ten years. She is well and truly in the past and you know what? That's where she belongs."
As the dialogue between Jerome and Glen ends, the camera shots that have been panning the Greengate estate switch to a woman stepping out of her car from the boots down. The camera focuses on her blood-red leather boots, gradually panning up the well-dressed woman until it eventually reaches her face, her expression a mixture of trepidation, fear and grim determination. She is Glen's ex-wife, Anita Jackson...

EPISODE 2Lisa’s initial reluctance to accept the possibility of being pregnant was genuinely heartbreaking. There is obviously a lot going on in her head and you did a great job at unpicking some of that during her scene with Hinda without giving too much away. Really excited for this new direction you’ve taken Lisa’s character in! Lovely scene with Phil and Maxine, it was good to see the latter soften a little as she was just starting to come across as a little unlikeable. After her comment earlier in the episode, I’m more convinced than ever that the secret partner just has to be our Anita. Bring it on! The ongoing mystery of Keeley’s arrival was endearing, and that last scene between her and Saffron was nice. Very realistic that Saffron wouldn’t necessarily realise that Mariusz was controlling towards them both. Loved Liam flirting shamelessly with Caitlin! Intrigued to see where Danielle’s jealousy is leading and what the root of that is. EPISODE 3I hope you don’t feel this comment condescending in any way, but this version of TD has so far featured your most mature writing to date. I can’t quite put my finger on why this is, but it feels almost as though it has come at a time in your life where you’re incredibly confident in yourself and what you have lived and that comes across so beautiful in your writing style. Or maybe I’m just talking absolute waffle haha! The party scenes were great. Reuben’s a little shit, I almost cheered when Declan gave him a bit of a roughing up lol! Didn’t see Liam telling Caitlin about his and Danielle’s tryst so quickly, but it made for good drama. I actually felt sorry for both Vanessa and Martin – obviously Martin has been trying his best and the hospital means a lot to him, but Vanessa was clearly upset about having to complain about him. Very multi-layered. Rosy and Keeley will always have my heart, such a lovely friendship with lots of chemistry. EPISODE 4As if Martin gets out of bed later than me and I’m just a measly admin assistant! Lovely establishment of his and Steve’s relationship. HERE SHE IS – Queen Anita <3 What a fabulous arrival. Cannot wait to see what mischief she gets up to. That final scene was gripping. Nice to see a bit of exploration in regards to Glen’s feelings, and I’m dying to know the result of Lisa’s pregnancy test! It was so refreshing to see Lisa and Glen genuinely loved up earlier on in the episode. I’m sure it won’t last, but it was lovely. The Rob/Steve scene was good; I liked the underlying tension between them. Also enjoyed the little hint of Steve seeing someone and then knowing about Rosy’s living situation…! Chandra getting Vanessa to reveal too much was hilarious and SO Chandra. And the Caitlin drama was well handled. There is obviously more to her than meets the eye – her reaction to the mention of Liz taking her home was very odd indeed. Wonder what the deal is with her dad? And who spiked her? I think it was an accidental thing and Reuben might have had a hand in the whole debacle! More soon please.
