• Coronation Street (affectionately known as 'Corrie' and even 'Corro' in the English Midlands) is, quite simply, the undisputed queen of all British soap operas. Beginning on 9th December 1960, episodes aired twice-weekly (initially live) for nearly 30 years, and the northwest England-based soap (specifically Salford) became an instant hit. Its gritty, earthy and often humorous take on northern life was something simply unseen or unheard of on British television at the time, when it was dominated by posh or southern accents. Corrie's larger-than-life characters, quick northern wit and the ups-and-downs of a humble but distinctive housing estate has been a national soap staple for over six decades. In 1989, the show added a third weekly episode. A fourth eventually followed, and fairly soon after a fifth.
Finally, a few years ago, a sixth weekly episode was added. Since then the Monday, Wednesday and Friday offerings were split into two halves, airing at 19:30 and 20:30 respectively. This all changed however in March 2022, when Corrie became the first British soap to air hour-long episodes, moving out of its traditional 19:30 time slot which it had occupied since 1961, and into a new 20:00-21:00 schedule. In the UK the show airs on ITV (England, Northern Ireland and Wales) and STV (Scotland). It is also simulcast in the Republic of Ireland on Virgin Media One. In addition, 'classic' episodes air on ITV3 in the United Kingdom. Corrie also airs globally: Australian episodes are one week behind UK time. Canada episodes are around a fortnight behind. South Africa also broadcasts the serial, as does Hulu in the United States.
